JAMMU, Mar 17: The city of  temples has virtually turned into the garbage dump as all the Safai Karamcharis of  Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) have gone on indefinite strike for the last three days.
Ministry of Housing and Urban Development  seems to be least bothered over the sufferings of the general public in Jammu city where garbage dumps in all the localities, roads and lanes have made the life of people hell just within three days. The  bins of the JMC installed at various locations, are over flowing with the garbage and foul smell  has added to the woes of the people.
In the main markets of the City like, Purani Mandi, old Sabzi Mandi, Moti Bazar, Parade Ground area, Raghunath Bazar, Residency Road, Bus Stand,  Pacca Danga, Rehari etc, the passers by and the shopkeepers  are facing threat of  various ailments  with the foul smell and heaps of garbage lying nearby, making their life miserable. The Municipal Commissioner and other senior officers of the  Department,  have failed to break the deadlock  by initiating dialogue with the agitating Safai Karamcharis, fleet drivers and other supervisory staff on strike.
Today on the third consecutive day of their agitation, these workers under the banner of Civil Safai Karamchari Union (JMC),  continued their  `Kaam Chhorh Hartal’ at Town Hall Complex near General Bus Stand.  The agitating workers were raising slogans in support of their demands.
President of the Union Rinku Gill, chairman- Ranjit singh,  Gulzar Massih, Issac Bhatti, Manga Mattoo, Vikay Kumar and several other trade unionists addressed the gathering and criticized the higher authorities for not resolving their pending issues. They claimed that several times representations were given to the Joint Commissioner and the Municipal Commissioner with regard to their demands but these officers did not take their issues seriously.
These agitating workers  are demanding scrapping of NGO system, reorganization of JMC, enhancement of wages of about 800 casual Safaikaramcharis and regularization of the services of the JMC fleet drivers.
The Union leaders claimed that they would continue their strike till their demands are addressed by the Government.
