China unwilling to open Kailash Mansarovar route

JAMMU, Jan 11: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today said that unwillingness of China is creating hurdle in allowing Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage from Leh.
“On the persistent demand of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, the issue of allowing Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage from Chushal/ Chummur via Demchok in Leh was taken up with the Prime Minister’s Office”, Mehbooba Mufti, who is also Minister Incharge Home said in the Legislative Assembly while responding to the question of Congress MLA from Leh, Nawang Rigzin Jora.
Subsequently, a meeting was held in the Ministry of Home Affairs on November 18, 2016 with the concerned Ministries/ departments to review the status of the demand of LAHDC Leh, the Chief Minister informed the House.
“It was informed by the Ministry of External Affairs that the matter regarding opening of Demchok for Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage and trade with China had been raised with the Chinese side on several occasions. However, they have not acceded to the request citing logistical and other difficulties as reason”, Mehbooba Mufti said.
