Chicago Police Officer Sentenced to Nearly 7 Years for Murdering Black Teen

WASHINGTON, Jan 19: A US judge sentenced Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke to almost seven years in prison over the fatal shooting of a black teenager.
“My findings are that an appropriate sentence would be 81 months in the Illinois Department of corrections,” Cook County Circuit court judge told Van Dyke during a hearing on Friday.
In October, a jury found Van Dyke found guilty of second degree murder for shooting and killing 17-year-old Laquan McDonald during a confrontation in 2014.
In addition to being found guilty of second-degree murder, Van Dyke was also found guilty on 16 counts of aggravated battery. However the judge based is sentencing on the state’s one-act, one-crime doctrine.
