JAMMU, July 14: Former minister and senior Congress leader R S Chib today lauded the decision of the Governor N N Vohra on direct elections of Sarpanches.
Addressing a meeting of the former Sarpanchs and Panchs of Block Suchetgarh today, Chib and several other speakers appreciated the decision of the State Administrative Council (SAC), headed by Governor on direct election of Sarpanches. While welcoming the decision, the speakers expressed their gratitude to the Governor and members of the SAC, for restoring the sanctity of the Panchayati Raj Act, which had been eroded by the previous PDP-BJP Government by amending the election process.
While welcoming the decision for reversing the amendment to the said Act made by the PDP-BJP Govt Congress leader said that this decision was totally anti-people and a step towards weakening the Panchayats. Chib blamed the previous PDP-BJP regime for carrying out the delimitation of Wards in which no rules were followed by the RDD. He said that the complete exercise to create new wards in all the Panchayats was totally illegal and carried out in an arbitrary and non-transparent manner.
The delimitation process was fully hijacked by the Ministers, MLAs and MLCs of the ruling alliance. Chib demanded an immediate review of the creation of new wards done by the BJP-PDP Govt and expressed full confidence in the wisdom of the Governor.
