Chennai tourist killed in stone pelting

SRINAGAR, May 7: A tourist was killed when he was hit by a stone today on the outskirts of Srinagar while authorities foiled sit in protest of separatists outside Civil Secretariat and normal life remained disrupted due to strike called by separatist amalgam.
A tourist was injured in stone pelting by protesters in Narbal area on the outskirts of Srinagar when he along with other members of the group were on their way to Gulmarg in Tavera car bearing registration number JKO1S 2601.

The incident took place this morning in Narbal. A girl Sabreena, 19, of Handwara was also injured in the stone pelting and she is undergoing treatment at SKIMS Soura.
The tourist was rushed to the SKIMS hospital Bemina at around 10:30 am for treatment and later shifted to SKIMS Soura.
He slipped into a coma and died at around 8:30 this evening. He has been identified as 22-year-old Thirumani, who had come to Kashmir from Chennai and was part of a group.
A case has been registered (under FIR Number 57/2018 u/s 148, 247, 307, 336 RPC) in Police Station Magam and investigations into it has been initiated.
A massive operation was launched this evening in Narbal area against the stone pelters who attacked the car in which the tourist was killed.
Earlier, last week seven tourists from Kerala were injured when the bus in which they were travelling came under stone pelting on their way to Pahalgam.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has expressed deep anguish and shock over the death of a tourist R Thirumani from Chennai who died today at Narbal on way to Gulmarg.
The Chief Minister visited the police hospital late evening, met the family of the deceased and expressed solidarity with them in this time of grief .
In the meantime, normal life was disrupted in Kashmir today in response to strike called by separatists against the killing of civilians.
The separatists Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, called for a complete strike today to protest against the civilian killings and had called for sit in protest outside Civil Secretariat.
While Geelani and Mirwaiz were placed under house arrest, Malik was taken into preventive custody on Saturday to foil the sit in protest.
Police detained Geelani outside his Hyderpora residence as he tried to lead a protest march and Mirwaiz was also detained after he defied house arrest and tried to march towards the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar.
Schools, colleges and other educational institutions have been closed as a precautionary measure to prevent any law and order situation.
The Kashmir University has cancelled all academic activity for two days and postponed the exams scheduled to be held today.
Shops and other business establishments remained closed while public transport remained off the roads due to the strike call.
The authorities have imposed restrictions on the movement of people in seven police station areas of the city — Maharaj gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhtatta, Safa Kadal, Maisuma and Kralkhud — as a precautionary measure.
Restrictions have also been imposed in Pulwama and Shopian districts of south Kashmir while security forces have been deployed in strength across the Valley for maintaining law and order.
Train services from Banihal to Baramulla were suspended while Internet services in mobile devices continued to remain snapped for the third day today.
The separatists have again called for strike across Kashmir on Tuesday against the killings.
And the divisional administration has decided to suspend the class work in all educational institutions of Kashmir valley on Tuesday.
The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to avoid law and order situation in Valley. “The class work will remain suspended in all schools, colleges and the universities on Tuesday,” said an official.
Director Colleges, Professor Zahoor Ahmad Chatt also said that class work will remain suspended tomorrow in all degree colleges.
All Kashmir University examinations scheduled to be held on Tuesday have been postponed.
A spokesman of the university said the fresh dates for the deferred examinations will be notified separately, later. “Classwork, as already announced, shall also remain suspended on Tuesday,” he said.
The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) has deferred all its exams scheduled for Tuesday. “Fresh dates for deferred exams will be issued separately, later. Further, the class work will also remain suspended on Tuesday,” spokesman of the varsity said.
And a CRPF man was injured in a grenade blast in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on today.
Militants hurled a grenade at a CRPF party deployed for routine duty at Tahab Chowk, leaving a CRPF jawan injured.
The injured was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Security forces have cordoned off the area to nab the militants responsible for the attack.
