Chaman Lal sounds caution over increasing number of voters

JAMMU, Jan 19: Observing that it sounds well in general that the strength of voters has gone up and more so, the gender ratio has increased because of bigger number of females getting registered as new voters, former Union Minister Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, however, cautioned that J&K being a border State and infected by so many designs of the powers hostile, all care should be taken in such matters.
As per reports in course of summary revision of the electoral rolls in the State, as many as 1, 95,717 new voters have been registered. These include quite higher number of female voters who number 1, 08,677. This bigger number of fair sex has improved the gender ratio from 889 to 909, which is close to the national average of 915.
“Even as this apparent improvement should be a matter of satisfaction, but the moot point is that how this could be possible. If the female birth rate after 2011 Census has gone up, for the new born, it would take many years to attain the age of franchise. But the most of the new entrances are stated to be in twenties and thirties or even more. Hence, the question is that why in the early Revisions they could not find place in the list of electorates?” he asked.
Prof Gupta said that the issue needed a deep look on several accounts. “First, large number of ultras who had gone to Pakistan for trainings and having weapons, after years are returning alongwith Pakistani ladies and their children. They are not coming via fixed routes but reaching to Nepal, Bangladesh etc. on Pak Passports. And from there getting illegally infiltrated in India and secretly reaching back to the State. It is obvious that there would be the attempts to get the status of citizenship for these illegal immigrants, For this end the enrolment in the voters lists could provide the ground to have this objective,” he said.
Prof. Gupta also pointed out that large number of Burmese and Bangladeshis have infiltrated in the State and as per reports, certain elements are not only guiding them to certain sensitive areas but also radicalizing them. He hoped that the concerned high ups would take all these factors into account in the exercise of registering new voters.
