CEO interacts with students, educates them about importance of ELCs

JAMMU, Dec 21: Chief Electoral Officer J&K, Shailendra Kumar, today interacted with the students of about 100 schools of districts Udhampur, Reasi, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch through Jammu Kashmir Knowledge Network (an initiative to connect school children of J&K to world of Knowledge through internet) and educated them about Electoral Literacy Clubs.
Addressed the students, the CEO said Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) are being set up in educational institutions in the Jammu & Kashmir in a bid to attract the youth to the democratic process and encourage them to exercise their franchise.
The detailed presentation was given to all students about the ELCs and their functioning in schools, how and when to get enrolled as voter after attaining the age of 18 years through online portal www.nvsp.in or by visiting in AERO/ERO offices and regarding the celebration of forthcoming 9th National Voters Day being celebrated on 25th January 2019.
Shailendra said that the Electoral Literacy Clubs are being set up with the aim of increasing the voter participation to 100%. Those who turn 18 on January 1 this year can enroll themselves on the voters’ list ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. “Besides the youth, women, marginalised sections of society, migrants, labourers, differently abled shall also be the part of electoral process, especially ensuring their registration, if still not enrolled”, he further said.
The CEO emphasized all the District Election Officers to share all the relevant frequently asked questions and other important communications including awareness programmes related EVM-VVPAT (Voter verifiable paper audit trail) with all stakeholders as these machines are being used in the forthcoming Lok Sabha Election-2019.
He further said that that Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) activities shall be carried out in all the districts to create awareness that how every vote matters and for the youth to make informed decision.
Director School Education Jammu, Anuradha Gupta, all Deputy Commissioners, Chief Education Officers and district Nodal Officers for SVEEP also attended the function.
