CEC for collective efforts to mitigate effects of climate change

KARGIL, Dec 5: Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC Kargil, Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan today said that collective effort is needed to generate awareness among the masses with regard to their responsibilities to mitigate the ill effects and disasters in the wake of climate change.
The CEC stated this while addressing a science awareness programme organized by Science and Technology Department, Kargil at Government Higher Secondary School Yourbaltak here today.
Kacho said that climate change poses immense challenges and it is essential that we bring in drastic changes in our thought and lifestyle to meet them.
Underlining the need to carry out a drive to aware masses and to build up strategies to lessen climate change besides to ensure sustainable development, the CEC said that it would be very useful to prepare a communication plan to bring in the convergence of various activities by involving non-Government organizations, academicians, media, scientists, technical experts, representatives of Panchayats and local bodies, public representatives.
On the occasion, an interschool debate competition on the topic “Global Warming”, a General Science Quiz competition and awareness plays/skits on AIDS and other diseases was held in which 20 students from different schools of Sodh area as well as the artists of Ranthag Theater Group Kargil participated and expressed their views.
Meanwhile, the need to carry out large-scale plantation drives, use of LED bulbs, carpooling besides other measures to reduce the emission of toxic gases was highlighted by the speakers.
The CEC while appreciating Science and Technology Department, Kargil for having organized this awareness programme underlined the need to conduct similar events in future so as to enhance awareness of the people particularly youngsters about the hazards of climate change and their responsibilities to carry out preventive measures in preventing disasters.
In the debate competition held on the occasion, Fatima Zahra of Government Higher Secondary School Yurbaltak won the first prize, Muhammad Abbass of Government Middle School Styangs Chutumail the second prize while as Zulikha Banoo of Government Girls Middle School Yurbaltak won the third prize respectively. In the General Science Quiz competition the team of Government Higher Secondary School Yurbaltak comprising of Muhammad Yaseen, Hassnain and Sakina Banoo bagged the first prize, Ajaz Ali, Nassir Hussain and Muhammad Mustafa of Government Middle School Doks Chutumail the second while as the team of Government Middle School Styangs Chutumail comprising of Sadiq Ali, Muhammad Abbass and Muhammad Hussain won the third prize respectively.
