Bus stand becomes dumping site

Srinagar, Nov 29: Much to the annoyance of the people, the Municipal authorities in Pulwama Town are temporarily dumping waste in Bus Stand in absence of a garbage dumping site.
The waste, which is collected from across the Town and its adjoining areas, is dumped everyday in the bus stand and kept there for days. The garbage mounds, which are common scene in the bus stand, have become a cause of annoyance to the people, especially shopkeepers. “The procedure is that they should clear the waste within 24 hours but it lies here for 15 to 20 days,” said the locals.
The locals said that the foul smell emanating from the garbage heaps have made it difficult for them to walk through the area. The shopkeepers said that the filth and foul smell have not only made them irritant but also vulnerable to diseases.
The Municipal authorities dump tons of biodegradable, non-biodegradable waste and garbage which include polythene and medical waste in open, posing greater threat of outbreak of disease.
Due to garbage and other water lying in bus stand, the dogs keep wandering its premises, hence also posing danger to people particularly in morning and evening hours.
When contacted, the Executive officer of Municipal Committee Pulwama told Excelsior that they are compelled to dump waste in bus stand as there is no permanent garbage dumping site. He, however, said that the Chief Minister has assured them that a site for dumping the waste would be allotted soon.
