BJP OBC MPs meet PM, thank him for steering move to give constitutional status to panel

NEW DELHI, Apr 12:
A group of BJP Members of Parliament including Union Ministers today called on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to compliment and thank him for working for providing constitutional status to the new Commission for Other Backward Castes (OBCs).
Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said giving constitutional status to the new panel will help improve the living conditions of people from these communities.
He was, however, critical of the stand of the Opposition parties in stalling the Bill in the Rajya Sabha. “Such negative approach used by Opposition parties to deny the OBC people their rights is regrettable,” the Prime Minister said, according to a BJP source.
“Congratulated our Hon PM Sh @narendramodi ji along with OBC MPs for providing constitutional status to new OBC body,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said in a tweet even as he tagged a few photographs of parliamentarians shaking hands or offering bouquet to the Prime Minister. Among others the delegation comprised Union Ministers Uma Bharti, Thawar Chand Gehlot, Bandaru Dattatreya and Hansraj Gangaram Ahir.
The delegation also comprised MPs like – Hukmdev Narayan Yadav, Satya Pal Singh, Pralhad Singh Patel and Hukum Singh. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said giving constitutional status to the new panel will help improve the living conditions of people from these communities.
On April 10, the Lok Sabha had passed the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Third Amendment) Bill, 2017 that would seek to establish a new National Commission for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes.
However, the Bill has been referred to the Select Committee by the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, the Government today accused the Congress and other Opposition parties of delaying justice to Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Bill for not letting the related draft legislation passed by the Rajya Sabha.
“These parties will have to answer to the people for that,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said at a press conference.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the opposition to the Bill in the Rajya Sabha was for the “political reasons and not on merit”.
“It was very surprising that these parties supported the Bill in the Lok Sabha, but in the Rajya Sabha they referred the Bill to the Select Committee. What changed in between, I do not know,” Mr Kumar said. (UNI)
