Gupta, Purnima vs Vijay Ch, Kour in JMC

JAMMU, Nov 10: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dominated all the five Municipal Committees in Kathua district, besides one Municipal Council of Kathua town after its candidates were declared elected to the post of president and vice presidents of all civic bodies in the district and chairman and vice chairman of Municipal Council Kathua, the elections for which were held today.
The BJP which declared Chander Mohan Gupta as the candidate for the post of Mayor and Purnima Sharma its candidate for the post of Deputy Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is all set to register its victory on both the posts as party has a strength of 43 Corporators in 75 member JMC House.
BJP received a shot in arm after it dominated Municipal Council (MC) of Kathua district and all the five Municipal Committees (MCs) of Hiranagar, Nagri Parole, Lakhanpur, Billawar and Basholi, giving a serious blow to Congress party.
BJP got two third majority in Kathua Municipal Corporation (KMC) where the party candidate Naresh Sharma was elected its chairman getting a support of 15 Councilors. He defeated his arch rival Rajinder Singh Bubby by a margin of nine votes. Bubby got only six votes. BJP’s Rekha Kumari Councilor from Ward No 4 Kathua was elected as vice chairperson of KMC. She got 13 votes.
Naresh Sharma along with his supporters had joined BJP recently. They were declared elected by District Election Officer, Rohit Khajuria.
The district officers including ADC Kathua, Ghanshyam Singh, SSP Kathua, Shridhar Patil, ACR, Jatinder Mishra, CEO MC Kathua, Sanjeev Gandotra and tehsildar, Kathua were present on the occasion.
Suramdin, who was elected unopposed from Ward No 2, Lakahanpur and later joined BJP, was elected president of Municipal Committee Lakhanpur while Rakesh Sharma also of BJP from Ward 3 was elected as vice president.
Both Suram Din and Rakesh Sharma got four votes each in seven member LMC. In 13 member Basholi Municipal Committee, Sumesh Sapolia of BJP from Ward 6 was elected as president while Abhinav Razdan of Ward 9 was elected vice president. Both got seven votes each.
In Billawar, Uma Kant Basotra , councilor from Ward 9 was elected as president of Billawar Municipal Committee (BMC). He got seven out of 13 votes while Mohinder Kumar was elected as vice president, who too got seven votes.
In 13 member Hiranagar Municipal Committee (HMC), Vijay Kumar Sharma of BJP was elected as president while Rajinder Singh was elected its vice president. Both Kumar and Singh got eight votes each.
In 13 member Nagri Parole Municipal Committee, Shashi Kant of BJP was elected as president while Tarseem Paul of Congress was elected as vice president through cross voting. They got eight and seven votes respectively.
Meanwhile BJP today declared the name of Chander Mohan Gupta, Corporator from Ward No 33 for the post of Mayor and party State vice president and Corporator from Ward No 1, Advocate Purnima Sharma as its candidate for the post of Deputy Mayor of prestigious Jammu municipal Corporation (JMC) the election of which will be held on November 15.
While Gupta will face independent candidate from Ward No 42, Vijay Choudhary, Purnima will face Congress candidate from Ward No 27, Charnajit Kour Shingari for the post of Deputy Mayor.
Soon after declaration of their candidature by BJP in a meeting here, today, both party candidates drove towards the office of JMC to fill up their respective forms. They were taken in a rally in which the senior party leaders including Jugal Kishore Sharma, Shamsher Singh Manhas, both MPs, Dr Narinder Singh, Yudhvir Sethi, Sat Sharma, Priya Sethi, Rajesh Gupta, Ashok Khajuria and others participated.
The name of the duo was cleared in BJP meeting here, today which was held at Party Headquarters. The meeting was chaired by BJP vice president, Pramodh Kapahi and it was attended by MP, (LS), Jugal Kishore Sharma, MP (RS) Shamsher Singh Manhas, party general secretary (org), Ashok Koul, State general secretaries , Dr Narinder Singh , Yudhvir Sethi, former Ministers, Sat Sharma and Priya Sethi MLA , Rajesh Gupta, MLCs Ashok Khajuria, S Charanjit Singh Khalsa and other senior leaders.
The name of Gupta was proposed by BJP district president, Baldev Singh Billawaria for the post of Mayor and it was seconded by all the corporators present in the meeting.
The name of Purnima Sharma was proposed by Parmodh Kapahi which was seconded by councilors present in the meeting.
The name of Mrs Shingari was cleared by Congress party in its meeting held at PCC Headquarters here today which was chaired by State president of the party and former Minister, G A Mir.
The meeting among others was attended by senior leaders Mula Ram, Manmohan Singh, Thakur Hari Singh, Surinder Singh Shingari and Vikram Malhotra. The meeting decided that Charnjeet Kour Shingari Corporator from Ward No 27 will be party candidate for the post of Deputy Mayor. All the 14 Corporators of the party were present in the meeting.
Commenting on the BJP’s performance in Kathua district, Speaker Legislative Assembly, Dr Nirmal Singh termed the victory of party in one MC of Kathua and five other municipal committees of the district as a vote for Narendra Modi’s developmental programme and BJP’s policies of justice to all and appeasement to none.
He said the people of J&K in general and Kathua district in particular have sent a message to entire nation that there can be no parallel to PM Narendra Modi in the country who can bring the nation and J&K State out of present crisis.
He said it is the vote for development, peace and prosperity as PM’s Mantra is `Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas” and every BJP worker is committed to that.
