Bio-technology at 10+2 level

Sir,
Biotechnology is a rapidly growing field and holds tremendous potential in terms of skill development, employability and public welfare especially in the fields of medicine, agriculture, veterinary and food industry due to which its importance has been recognised world-over. In our country also, this field is being promoted as is evident in the numerous projects being granted by Government of India through various funding agencies like. Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST), University Grants Commission (UGC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other funding agencies every year. Our state, being blessed with enough natural and human resources has vast potential to excel in this important field provided the trained and qualified workforce of Biotechnologists in our state is utilized. Although, the then State Government included Biotechnology as a subject in 2004 in school and colleges yet nothing substantial has been done in this regard till date which has led to increased unemployment among the youth qualified in this field. The seriousness of situation is reflected in the fact that after more than a decade of passing out of the first batch of M. Sc, Biotechnology from the University of Jammu, only 24 posts have been sanctioned for biotechnology .  On the other hand every year approximately hundred students pass out from various Universities in the state.  Add to this a huge number of students of the state who complete their post graduation in Biotechnology from  other parts of the country consequently leading to over piling of unemployed Biotechnology postgraduates.  Many of these people are now unable to apply for jobs because they are over aged. Introduction of  Biotechnology as a full-fledged subject in 10+2 and graduate levels would help in generating much required  employment opportunities for them. Furthermore, department of Forensics, criminology, agriculture,  horticulture, floriculture, animal husbandry, pollution control can also absorb many of these Biotechnology  students.
There is a sense of growing disappointment, frustration and desperation among the unemployed youth trained in  the field of biotechnology who are otherwise capable of contributing to the growth of the nation as well as our  state. In this condition, any further delay on taking required action would be highly unfair to the students who  have opted for this important field as their career. This would discourage new generations from taking up this  field in future, hence compromising our ability to compete with other states and countries in this flourishing and  progressive area.
We request the concerned authorities to look into the matter and necessary actions are taken as soon as possible to ensure that the confidence ofthe youth in the authorities is not shattered.
Yours etc….
