Beacon official killed, 12 escape unhurt

Srinagar, Mar 4: A Beacon official was killed during snow clearance after he came under a slide at Furkiyaan Top along the Kupwara-Keran road in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today while 12 labourers escaped unhurt.
Amandeep Singh (belt no. 15588066 L), the driver of the snow clearance machine came under a mud and snow slide when he was clearing the road at Ferkiyaan Top in Keran sector in Kupwara district this afternoon.
Two labourers  Shakoor Ahmad Piswal son of Mohammad Gulzar and Mohammad Sumander Mir son of Suliman Mir, residents of Farkin who were also buried under the slide were evacuated safely. Twelve labourers of the Beacon, who were working on the road, had narrow escape.
The rescue operation was immediately launched by the nearby Army unit and he was evacuated in the unconscious condition. He was initially shifted to nearby military hospital where from he was referred to Army’s 92 base hospital at Badamibagh in Srinagar. However, on reaching Baramulla, Singh succumbed to injuries.
SSP Kupwara, Shamsheer Hussain said, that the condition of Singh was critical when he was evacuated and later he succumbed on way to hospital.
A group of Beacon labourers of 109 RCC regiment presently attached with Army’s 268 Brigade in Keran were pressed into service by authorities to clear snow along the Kupwara-Keran road which was closed for last four days due to snowfall.
“A bulldozer and at least 12 labourers were on job. Suddenly, a mud and snow slide occurred and the driver of bulldozer Amandeep Singh came under it,” the SSP said.
The officer said that soldiers of the nearby Brigade immediately started the rescue operation and evacuated the driver, who was in an unconscious state.
An officer said that it was actually a mud and snow slide which came at a time when the bulldozer was clearing the heap of snow along the road, and its upper side the slides occurred.
And in the meantime, Jammu and Kashmir Police along with volunteers and medical team today rescued eight persons who were trapped yesterday at ohma,  80 kilometers from Padum Zanskar in Ladakh.
Police said that yesterday, Police Station Zanskar received an information that a group of local people hailing from Zanskar while coming from Leh towards Zanskar via Chaddar Trek got trapped at ohma near Nyaraks Pullu due to sudden breakage of ‘Ice Chadder’ on Zanskar river.
Police launched a rescue operation and constituted a rescue team comprising Zanskar police headed by Sub Inspector Abdul Mateen along with local volunteers,  Medical team and necessary rescue materials. The rescue team immediately swung into action and rushed to the spot.
Police said that despite freezing, harsh climatic conditions of the area, all the eight trapped persons were rescued. They were identified as Zulfikar Ahmad son of Mohammad Hanif, Mohammad Hussain son of Dildar Khan, Mumtaz Ahmad son of Gh Rasool residents of Padum, Nawang Stanzin son of Chosphel, Tsering Sangdup son of Tashi Rigzin, Lobzang Stanzin son of Tsering Targais residents of Asting, Tsewang Namgial son of Phuntsog Namgial resident of Lungmur Zanskar and Mohammad Shamim son of Fata Mohammad resident of Uffi.
Police said that the operation was conducted under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police Kargil Arun Gupta and Incharge SDM Zanskar Tundup Namgyal.
And on the basis of information received from SASE, authorities here issued medium danger avalanche warning for Baramulla, Gulmarg, Furkian-Z Gali, Kupwara-Chowkibal-Tanghdar, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil, Leh and Gurez Sector.
A low danger warning was issued for Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar Udhampur, Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam districts and Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
People living in these areas have been asked not to move unnecessary towards avalanche prone areas and take precautionary measures.
