SRINAGAR, Apr 30: Accompanied by the enforcement squad of Srinagar Municipal Committee (SMC), Inspector General of Police (IGP) Traffic, Basant Rath, today cleared encroached footpaths and roadsides at several places in Srinagar.
An anti-encroachment team consisting of the SMC, district administration and traffic police visited different busy squares of the city including Munawarabad, Jahangir Chowk and Lalchowk and removed the encroachments.
At Munawarabad several encroachments along the roadsides were demolished by the SMC. “It was the joint team of SMC and local administration who conducted the drive. The traffic police was also doing their job,” an official who was part of the drive said.
IGP Traffic appeared in the city center at around 2: 30 pm along with the enforcement squad of SMC and removed the flower vendors who have taken over a large stretch of footpath outside the Pratap Park. These vendors were provided space inside the SRTC Transport Yard last year as part of rehabilitation of the street vendors but they continue to occupy both the places.
He also visited Jahangir Chowk and Lalchowk where he directed for the removal of street vendors.
As the anti-encroachment drive started, a large number of bystanders followed Basant Rath and recorded the removal of encroachments with their mobile cameras. They also took selfies with the IG traffic.
