Bank guard foils rifle snatching bid

SRINAGAR, Aug 10: A youth was critically injured during clashes between protesters and security forces in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today.
Fayaz Ahmad, a resident of Poterwal village, received a bullet in his abdomen during clashes that broke out when a cordon and search operation was in progress in Tangwani-Tuckroo village of Shopian district.
Youth took to streets soon after security forces launched an operation against militants. The troops opened fire as the clashes intensified, leaving a youth injured. The troops fired after their Casper vehicle was pelted with stones.

Ahmad was shifted to district hospital Pulwama where from he was referred to SMHS hospital for specialised treatment.
Two masked men today tried to snatch the rifle of a Jammu and Kashmir Bank guard in Khrew area of Pampore. Two masked men attacked guard of J&K Bank branch Khrew to snatch his service rifle. However, the guard resisted and was injured in the process. The injured guard was later shifted to hospital for treatment. However, the two men managed to escape after failing to snatch the rifle.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and manhunt has been launched to nab the attackers.
And protests were held amid shutdown in Tral township of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district today against recent arrests by security forces.
Scores of people took to streets and pelted stones on Army vehicles passing through the area to lodge their protest against the detention of 11 persons during past couple of days.
Shops and business establishments remained closed in the town while traffic was off the roads. Police on Tuesday night had detained 11 people during raids. The detentions came after attacks on Special Police Officers (SPOs) in the town.
Police  today arrested an accused allegedly involved in June 17 Manasbal park blast in Ganderbal. Polcie said that the accused was absconding after the blast.
“Ganderbal police apprehended an absconder identified as Mohammad Imran Sofi son of Abdul Majeed Sofi resident of Kondabal Safapora Ganderbal who was involved in case FIR number 20/2018 related to Explosive blast at Manasbal Park,” said a police statement.
Thirteen local visitors, including minors and students, were injured in the blast. The spokesperson said that the investigation suggested that the accused had masterminded the blast.
“Besides, the accused is also a chronic stone pelter. He is involved in instigating the youth of the area to resort to stone pelting,” he said. The accused has been detained for further investigation, he added.
