Ayushman Bharat

Sir,
“Sarve Bhavantu Sukhina, Sarve Santu Niramya, Sarve Bhadrani Pashyantu, Maa Kashchit Bhagbhavet”, this famous adage from Brihadaranyaka Upanishad reflects upon the fact that how our forefathers focussed upon the health– physical and mental, of the individuals and the community as a whole. The recently launched Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana, too seems to be in line with the above mentioned saying. Ayushman Bharat, as the name suggests, has been launched as the world’s largest health care programme wherein two major projects will be undertaken. Firstly, 1.5 lakh HWCs will be made, upgraded and restored as a means to bolster the primary healthcare. Secondly, it aims to provide a cover of Rs. 5 lakh to about 10.7 crore families per year belonging to poor and marginalised sections.
This project entails multiple benefits for the general populace. Firstly, it’ll provide insurance coverage for secondary and tertiary healthcare, thus reducing out of pocket costs, a major cause of poverty. Secondly, a beneficiary covered under this scheme will be allowed to take cashless benefits from any public/private empanelled hospitals across the country. Thirdly, it’ll make good quality healthcare affordable for the poor population in any private hospital , hitherto considered out of reach, thus limiting social divide. Like any other scheme, this scheme too suffers from certain lacunas, which,if resolved earlier would make this scheme an historic one.
