Auto rickshaw drivers protest over alleged harassment by traffic police

JAMMU, Mar 5: Scores of auto rickshaw drivers today held a protest against traffic police for dislocating their stands and harassing them on the name of traffic reforms.
The protest was led by Sunil Dimple, president, Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM), who along with auto rickshaw drivers expressed resentment over the adamant attitude of the traffic police.
The auto rickshaw drivers first staged demonstration at Miean Dido Chowk, Amphalla and then in the form of a rally moved towards Police Control Room, Parade, where they held protest amid slogans against traffic police.
Addressing the protesters, Sunil Dimple, said that a large number of auto rickshaw drivers have been dislocated and no auto is being allowed to stand on any auto stand in Jammu city. He said that Government has failed to control traffic problem in Jammu city and to hide their failures, poor auto drivers are being made target on the name of traffic reforms.
“Dislocating auto drivers cannot solve traffic problem and if the Government is serious to do so, it should constructing flyovers at Rehari Chungi, Jewel Chowk, Ring Roads, parking slots for vehicles and proper stands for matadors”, he said. He further said the auto rickshaw drivers are ready to follow the traffic rules and to travel on the meters but the auto fares lists should be revised.
Later, Sunil Dimple along with representatives of auto rickshaw drivers met IG Traffic, Basant Rath, and apprised him of the issues of auto rickshaw drivers. The IG Traffic said that all the demands raised by Sunil Dimple are very genuine and will be looked into.
