JAMMU, Oct 5: In a welcome non-governmental initiative to provide opportunity to young directors to show case their creative skills, a three-day short play theatre festival organized under the aegis of Amateur Theatre Group (ATG), opened at the K L Saigal Hall, here today.
Directed by Aparna Kapoor, an accomplished actor herself, today’s presentation was Surendra Verma’s Hindi play ‘Marnoprant’. The play, a modern classic, explored the emotions of a husband and the lover of a woman, who meet after the woman dies in an accident. The husband who discovers the lover’s existence in his wife’s life only by accident after her death, portrays the agony and sorrow at the betrayal, while the lover who finally gets curious to know the husband, expresses his resentment towards his beloved for not giving herself totally into the relationship.
Today’s presentation, in the intimate setting of the K L Saigal Hall, was successful in bringing forth the intensity of meeting between two characters, their sharing of bitter-sweet memories about the deceased and their failure to possess her completely. The very fact of their relationship with the deceased binding the two together in a bond that was both sad and thought provoking, came alive on the stage by serious yet passionate enactment of respective roles by Sandeep Verma as husband and Vivek Sangotra as the lover.
The measured body movements of the actors and controlled gestures, intensity of speech, in the background of Ankit Sharma’s Spartan set design, along with appropriate evocative background musical score designed by Mohit Mehra, kept the appreciative audience engrossed.
Earlier speaking on the occasion Mushtaq Creative Director of ATG said that after the present Natyaotsav of short plays, very soon a festival of full length plays will be organized by inviting more theatre groups. He said the intention is to galvanize the available human resource to hold regular theatre activity in the winter capital. Tomorrow, Moti Lala Kemmu’s play Nangey, directed by Sandeep Verma, will be performed.
