Army organizes ‘Uri Awami Mela’

SRINAGAR, Nov 8: Army Garrison organized ‘Uri Awami Mela’–a multi spectrum platform for welfare of the local populace.
The mela was inaugurated by Major General RP Kalita, General Officer Commanding, Dagger Division. The event was aimed at bringing various facilities offered by Government and army at one common venue to assist the people of the small border town.
During the mela, loan amount of more than Rs 75 lakh were sanctioned on the spot by different banks. In the mela, information and awareness counters of different Government officers were also established. A mega medical camp was also organised in association with Social Welfare Department wherein wheelchairs and various physical aids were distributed to differently abled persons.
Various kinds of equipment under the theme “Know your Army” were showcased. For the talented youth, a “Job Fair” was also organized, in which Udaan, Quest and Bombay Barbeque Hospitality Service selected 20 local youth. The mela gave an opportunity to experience myriad flavours of the Kashmir valley through Uri Haat and Amusement Park. The final match of volleyball league and Tug of War were also organized. Team of Dhanni Sayida won Tug of War title, while Gingle won the Volleyball League trophy.
The mela was witnessed by the GoC Dagger Division, DIG North Kashmir, SSP Baramulla, Dr Shajad Shafi, Haji Masadak and other prominent leaders of the district.
The mela gave an opportunity to the local talents who performed in various traditional and cultural programmes highlighting the great cultural heritage of Kashmir. A vast variety of cuisines from different parts of the nation were also displayed. An enthusiastic performance by the well trained dog of Army Dog Unit left the crowd spell bound.
Major General RP Kalita awarded the winners of Volleyball League, Tug of War and various other competitions. Civil porters working with army were awarded for their hard work and contribution. He also interacted with the 15 selected cricket players who represented Uri, during Uri-Pune Friendship Trophy held in the month of September at Pune in association with Aseem Foundation.
