General Bipin Rawat, has made his maiden 3-day visit to J&K as the new Army Chief. Although he has served for some time in J&K and is aware of the proxy war unleashed by Pakistan, yet the fact that he chose J&K the first state to which he should make an official visit as the new Army Chief has much significance in the sense that he gives J&K much importance from security point of view. We highly appreciate the gesture and in fact, this is the right thing which he should have done. The army is in action at many fronts in all the three regions of the State. It is fighting with terrorists, militants, smugglers, clandestine infiltrators and internal and external subversives. The army is maintaining round the clock vigil on the LoC, LAC and IB. This is Herculean task and India has shown to the world that Indian army is capable of securing its vast borders firmly and strongly against any nefarious designs of our adversaries.
General Rawat shoulders great and difficult responsibility of ensuring the security of our borders which have become vulnerable owing to hostile and belligerent attitude of our closest neighbours namely Pakistan and China. The worst is that the two have entered into an unholy alliance against us. Pakistan wants to grab Kashmir while China is nibbling at our eastern borders be it in Ladakh or Arunachal. Our army units are deployed along thousands of miles of our common border with these countries. The entire border in Ladakh region from Baltal to Nobra is mountainous being the flanks and ridges of the Himalayas. Our connectivity to Ladakh region remains cut off during six months of winter owing to heavy snow fall. Eastern borders, too, are not that conducive because of heavy rains and disruption of communication.
General Rawat has met with Corps Commanders and field commanders. He has visited the forward lines and seen for himself how the brave and valiant jawans of Indian army are protecting the borders in face of severe conditions. He had all praise for the jawans whom he met. In Kashmir, army has always been coming to the help; of the civilian Government whenever it needed help for the civilian population in times of natural calamity. It has an enviable record of performance and excellent rapport with the civilian population. We are confident that like all of his predecessors, General Rawat will maintain cordial relations between the army and the civil society in Jammu and Kashmir.
