JAMMU, Apr 11: Army chief Gen Bikram Singh today held a high level review of security scenario  ahead of remaining phases of Parliament elections in Jammu and Kashmir with top Army Commanders including General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Northern Command Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra.
Gen Singh reached the Northern Command Headquarters at Udhampur this afternoon on two days visit of the Command to review operational preparedness and security scenario on the Line of Control (LoC) as Army wanted to maintain peace on the borders in remaining four phases of Parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Army chief was briefed about the security situation on the LoC and hinterland in Jammu and Kashmir by Lt Gen Chachra in the meeting.
The Northern Army Commander gave a detailed briefing to Gen Singh on the overall security situation in the Command theatre and relief operations taken by the Army for the general public during recent onslaught of snow in the remote areas of the Valley, official sources said here.
The visit of the Army chief comes in the backdrop of several successful counter terrorist operations conducted in the Command theatre in the past few months.
Gen Bikram Singh also interacted with other senior Commanders and discussed issues pertaining to welfare of troops and veterans (ex-servicemen), sources said.
The Army chief commended all ranks for the recent successes and the high state of operational preparedness.
He also complimented the officers and personnel from Dhruva Command for extending humanitarian assistance to the public. Gen Singh will leave for Delhi tomorrow in the afternoon, sources added.
Sources said the Army chief called for maintenance of strict surveillance on the borders with Pakistan during remaining four phases of elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources added that the Northern Army Commander briefed Gen Bikram Singh on the situation prevailing on the LoC and number of militants across the LoC, who were awaiting an opportunity to sneak into this side to create trouble but troops haven’t allowed them to succeed.
Though the Army was not directly involved in security deployment for conduct of elections, it has been playing a major role in peaceful polling by guarding the border and ensure that the militants didn’t enter into this side to create trouble.
It may be mentioned here that first phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir was held yesterday in which Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat had gone to polling. Five remaining Parliamentary seats would go to polls in next four phases on April 17, 24, 30 and May 7.
