Another attack on doctors in GMCH

JAMMU, Sept 1: Five doctors including a senior Neuro-surgeon was today attacked by a patient and his two lady attendants in Ward No 5 of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Jammu, this afternoon, following an argument over some issue.
According to the reports the patient identified as Shakir-ul-Rehman a resident of Prem Nagar near Gujjar Nagar, Jammu, who was admitted in Ward No 5 of the hospital few days back following a fatal road accident, this afternoon entered into a heated argument with Senior Neuro Surgeon, Dr Furkan over the issue of his discharge from the hospital.
Soon the arguments took violent turn and the patient along with his two lady attendants attacked Dr Furkan. When his junior colleagues Dr Sonam (a PG doctor) and three other resident doctors tried to intervene they were also attacked and thrashed badly by the patient and their attendants.
According to the eyewitnesses, the attendants even did not spare the police officials of police post GMCH and also thrashed them when they intervened. Later, more police officials reached the pot and overpowered the accused patient and attendants.
A case under Sections 353, 332, 323/34 RPC has been registered against the three accused at police station Bakshi Nagar, after submission of a written complaint by the hospital administration.
Meanwhile, Resident Doctors Association (RDA), GMCH and associated hospitals has condemned this fresh incident of attack on doctors by the attendants and questioned the security of the doctors in the hospital.
RDA president, Dr Akhil Gupta, said that it is shameful that those doctors who saved the life of the accused patient were later assaulted by him and their attendants. He said RDA condemns this shameful incident and criticised hospital administration for its negligence toward safety of Resident Doctors who are working day and night to provide services toward humanity.
General secretary, RDA, Dr Wasim Chouhan questioned the competence of GMC administration for its inability in Attendant regulation in Emergency and general wards which is a long pending demand of RDA.
He appealed Health & Medical Education Minister, Choudhary Lal Singh, to intervene and provide a safe and secure environment for doctors so that they can provide health care facilities to the best of their capabilities.
Dr Ankush Sadotra, Registrar Surgery, appealed the concerned authorities to make assault on duty doctor a non-bailable offence so that these nuisances can be prevented in future.
