Ajaz Jan expresses concern over flash floods in Poonch district

JAMMU, Mar 30: Former Member Legislative Assembly (MLA) and senior National Conference (NC) leader Ajaz Jan expressed grave concern over rising water level and flash floods in the Poonch district due to incessant rains and urged the administration to pool all the resources to meet the challenge.
Addressing a press conference, Jan said six families have already moved from Chambar Kanari Panchayat, Chandak and Poonch City. Besides Khanater, Sawjian, Loran, Baracher, Babnoi, Bandi Khama, Ichan, Arai, Qarba, Islamabad, Kirni, Bandi Chachia, Gali Pindi, Sathra, Chaknara, Junnu Gam, Dedar, Loram, Saral, Nangali, Kankote, Khari Karmara, Ajote and Mandi area are also under threat of flash floods.
He said the rains have already caused enormous damage to property and crops in Mandi and Poonch blocks and reports were pouring in about people moving out of their homes to take shelter at safer places. They need quick response and all assistance from the administration, he added.
He said various areas have been inundated in the rains waters which call for immediate dewatering while close monitoring is highly needs in the areas prone to flash floods.
Jan asked the administration to formulate an exigency plan to meet the situation in case it worsens, as the metrological reports suggest more rains in coming days.
He recalled the elaborate measures taken by the former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during September 2014 floods in terms of constituting apex level committees for both Kashmir and the Jammu regions to monitor the situation and to take preventive and corrective steps.
Among others present were State vice presidents, Rattan Lal Gupta and Kashmira Singh, Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, Jugal Mahajan, Pradeep Bali, Sajjad Shaheen, Anil Dhar, district president Rajouri Bashir Ahmed Wani, etc.
