JAMMU, Sept 16: Abdul Gani Goni, a veteran politician of the State hailing from Bhaderwah passed away today at GMC Hospital Jammu after brief illness.
Late Goni had a long history of his career which he started with joning Indian Army and after serving the same being a law graduate started legal practice at Doda. Later, he became member of Constituent Assembly and served the State after joining politics in different capacities. He was Member of Parliament (MP) in early sixtees and became a State Minister subsequently Cabinet Minister.
He was elected as Speaker of J&K Assembly in the year 1972 and remained as such till 1977. Late Goni was appointed as ambassador to Jordan by Govt of India by Janata Party regime in the year 1978.
Late Goni have three daughters and two sons and is uncle of Mohd Aslam Goni, former Advocate General.
Former Principal GMC Jammu is the eldest daughter Shahnaz Goni presently Chief Engineer (Maintenance) Power is youngest daughter, besides Dr Shama Goni, is doctor in America .His elder son is serving in Insurance Company in Saudi Arabia and younger son is XEn in R&B Deptt. With the death of Late Goni, people of State in general and people of Jammu region in particular are in state of grief and have expressed sympathies with the bereaved family.He will be buried in the premises of Alnoor Mosque, Greater Kailash Jammu tomorrow (Wednesday) at 11 AM .The funeral procession will start from G-5 Lane 17, Greater Kailash, Jammu.
