CMS Computer Institute holds award ceremony Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Sept 26: The CMS Computers Institute held its first certificate award ceremony here yesterday. Sister Roselima, Principal St Marys Presentation Convent School was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, she said that the knowledge of the computers had wide application in all walks of the life. She congratulated the students for their brilliant performance and advised them to go in for computer education in large numbers. The Principal also gave away prizes to the best performers in Primary, Middle and High Class categories. Shivangini of Class V of the Presentation Convent bagged the prize in her category. For Middle and Higher Classes went to Eeshan Chopra, Rakshit Goswami and Shachi Sankhyadhar. The CMS had also held quiz contest in Government College for Women Gandhinagar and Parade. Prizes for these contests were also given on this occasion. Those awarded included Megha Chawla, Neha Angurana and Suchitra Sharma from Gandhinagar Women College and Supriya Ganjoo, Puja Pandoh and Geetika Sangra from Parade College. |
Pro-pak militants ask cinema owners to close business SRINAGAR, Sept 26: Pro-Pakistan militant outfit Tehreeq-ul-Mujahideen has asked cinema owners, video parlours and cable operators to close their business in Kashmir within two days. The threat to cinema owners came after outifit activists attacked Regal Cinema in the heart of the city on the very first day of its reopening after a decade-long closure on Friday, killing one person and injuring 19 others. A statement issued by the outfit yesterday said the outfit militants hurled two grenades in quick succession in the regal cinema compound in which several persons were injured. The attack was launched for upholding of the Islamic values in Kashmir, the statement said. (PTI) |

He said in the Lasik method a hinged corneal flap of 130-180 um thickness and 7.5-9.5 mm diameter is raised by using a microkeratome. Then the Excimier Laser is applied to the exposed storm bed and the flap is replaced, the interface is irritated and then allowed to dry, he said, adding this gets reattached in two minutes without any stitches. There is no wound and the patient is able to see clearly soon after the treatment. He said the introduction of plant at his clinic is a boon for the people involved in show business, modeling, swimming, players, those who want to join the forces and other professions in which they feel that spectacles are the hindrance. The doctor said besides the treatment of both eyes in one sitting , the other greatest advantage of Lasik is correction of high numbers of plus, minus or mixed numbers. Besides members of the General Council large number of prominent citizens also participated in the meeting. The meeting started with National Anthem and patriotic songs which were greatly applauded by the gathering. RRL celebrates
CSIR Foundation Day Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Sept 26: Mrs Shailaja Chandra, Secretary, Department of Indian System of Medicines (ISM) and Homeopathy, Union Ministry of Heath and Family Welfare has said that proper promotion and projection has not been given to the ISM which is the safest and cheapest method of treatment. She was speaking on the 57th Foundation Day of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) organised by the Regional Research Laboratory (RRL). Lauding the achievements of the CSIR, Mrs Chandra said that most of the research organisations have been unable to keep the traditional system of treatment alive, whereas, CSIR has kept the flags flying during all these years. She further said that Medical and other sciences were unable to find a solution to the commanmans problems as majority of the population in India was still living in unhealthy atmosphere. She said our department needed technical know how from CSIR for projection of ISM and Homeopathy in the country. Earlier, in his welcome address, Prof S S Handa, Director RRL said, "since its inception in 1942, the CSIR has been continually striving to promote development of indigenous technologies and utilisation of indigenous resources", adding spread all over the country CSIR has 40 laboratories having technological staff of 25,000 and are working as one family and one unit. He informed that during the last five years, there has been a sea-change in the economic, political and technological environment the world over. CSIR has the potential, the ability and the will to initiate and be in the forefront as is has great strength in its manpower and infrastructure, he further said. Prof Handa was of the firm opinion that the 57 year old CSIr has to play a different role in todays world. Science under this apex body has to make not only economic sense but also social sense. A technical lecture was also delivered by Dr S K Sharma on, "Problems associated with the Production and Standardisation of Herbomineral Drugs. Dr Sharma said, " Indian Ayurvedacharyas had realised the role of herbs and metallic elements in the human metabolism which led to the development of allopathic system who have been using metallic preparations for the past many years. Proper care has to be taken while selecting the raw material, its purification and study on the enhancement of the desirable therapeutic properties". He dealt in detail on the subject of problems associated with the standardisation of herbomineral drugs. Later, the chief guest presented mementos to the retiring and those who have completed 25 years of service in RRL, Jammu. Besides this, the students of RRL School who won prizes in quiz and essay competitions were also given awards. Retiring staff members, who were given mementos and shawls were Messrs O P Sharma, Arjun Singh, Gian Kumari, Durga Dass, Dr S K Banerjee, Dr J L Suri, Razak Bhat, B P Saxena, Charlis Gill, Dharam Raj, Dr O P Gupta and Dr S Grewal. Those honoured for completing 25 years of service included Dr (Mrs) Preeti Somal, Dr J M Baldev Singh, Dr J M Upadya, Mrs Neelam Verma, R K Raina, Tara Chand Bhagat, Chaman Lal, C L Dhullu and Mrs Vijay Bajaj. The students who were honoured were M S Bhatia(Ist), Arun Kumar(2nd), while Prabhu Dutt and Baleshwar Mina shared third position in science quiz competitions. While, in other competitions (group-A upto 7th class), Nisha Bhakhroo, Puneet Sharma and Deepak Bedi bagged first, second and third positions respectively. In group-B from 8th to 10th class, Pooja Gupta clinched the top slot, while Mega Raina, Gunjan Aggarwal bagged second and third positions. Mahajans anniversary observed Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Sept 26: The 133th birth anniversary of Hans Raj Mahajan, a great social reformer was celebrated by the Jammu Central Mahajan Sabha by organising painting competition, symposium and debates at the Mahajan Bhavan here today. Mr Yash Paul Gupta, president of the Mahajan Sabha threw light on the life and immense contribution of Hans Raj Dogra who worked tirelessly for social reforms. Known as She-e-Duggar, Hans Raj Mahajan was the founder president of the Sabha and devoted his life to the cause of the poor people. He did a lot for the needy and down-trodden persons in Jammu. Mr Gupta said the Mahajan Sabha was working for well being of the community and it is encouraging the youth particularly to achieve excellence in all walks of life. Sabhas functioning was transparent, he added in the children painting competition, there were three categories and nearly one hundred students participated. A large number of parents of the children were also present. In the first group students of class 1 and 2, Shivang Gupta, Sidharth Gupta and Nakul Gupta secured the first, second and third position respectively. Consolation prize was given to Amin. While for 3rd and 4th class students painting competition, top slot was won by Deepshah Gupta, Deepika Gupta and Twinkle Gupta while consolation prizes were announced to Kunal Gupta. In the third category of class 5th and 6th student painting competition Vikul Gupta, Rahgav Gupta and Kamal Gupta obtained first three positions respectively. Tanu Mahajan got consolation prize. A symposium on the topic; "The Problems of Joint Family System and Their Solution". A large number of participants were from 7th, 8th and 9th classes and of them Gaurav Gupta, Kunika Gupta and Kunal Gupta secured first, second and third positions respectively. Five consolation prizes were announced in favour of Sonali Gupta, Rajni Gupta, Vikram Gupta, Neha Gupta and Divya Gupta. Debate was held on "Dowry System should be Abolished" and in it students of class 10th, 11th and 12th took part and spoke very well on the topic. Sonam Gupta, Supriya Gupta and Prinyanka Mahajan were announced to get the top slot while consolation prizes went to Mansi Gupta, Monika Gupta and Mukhi Gupta. The topic for discussion among the college and University students was on " Happiness in Life is possible only Through Simple Living". In it Manisha Gupta, Monika Choudhary and Naresh Gupta were adjudged first, second and third respectively. The panel of judges for different contests were: Prof Hari Om, Prof T C Langar, Prof Arun Gupta, Prof M M Gupta, Prof Yash Pal Gupta, Mrs Kiran Choudhary, Mrs Krishna Gupta and Mrs Nirmal Gupta. Prof J K Gupta, general secretary of the Sabha announced the results of the contests as adjudged by the panel of judges. It was informed that the prizes would be distributed on October 3. Soon after the announcement of the results, Mr Dinesh Gupta and few other parents stood up and questioned the fairness of the selections for the awards in respect of debating contest. There was confusion for some time and Mr Yash Pal Gupta, president had tense moments. He said the judges have been persons of integrity and the Sabhas endeavour has been to ensure fairness in giving awards to students. Assuring that there shall be more reforms and system further improved. However, the aggrieved participants in debates and their parents voiced their protest but the president tried to pacify them and asked all such students should come at 4 pm on September 27 to sort out the matter. |
PDP to force new Govt to initiate dialogue on Kashmir SRINAGAR, Sept 26: Former Union Home Minister and president of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said his party would force the new Government at the Centre to initiate dialogue with militants to restore peace in Kashmir. "If the Central Government is serious for restoration of peace and normalcy in the State, it should initiate unconditional dialogue with the militants and their leaders without further loss of time," Mufti said while addressing election rallies in Pahalgam area of Anantnag district today. He said his party would soon wage a struggle for the restoration of normalcy, democracy and rule of law in the State to protect human rights. Accusing the ruling National Conference of dismal performance and its failure to mitigate misery of the people, Mufti alleged that the State Government was silent about the "reign of terror let loose by special task force, pro-Government militants, militants and security forces." He said PDP would start agitation after elections against the misrule of National Conference Government. Mufti alleged that the law and order situation in the State was further deteriorating as the bullet-to-bullet policy of the State Government was proving counter-productive. "The militants again have established strong bases in some areas in Kashmir and are striking at random with State Government remaining a mute spectator to the situation," he said. Senior PDP leader and party nominee for Srinagar constituency Mehbooba Mufti charged the National Conference Government with indulging in electoral malpractices in Srinagar-Badgam parliamentary elections. Mehbooba told election meeting in Verinag and Nowgam in Anantnag district that the National Conference adopted "some methods to rig poll in Srinagar parliamentary constituency like it did in 1987 Assembly elections." Bali flays State Government for neglecting Doda district Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Sept 26: Mr Bali Bhagat, BJP, MLA from Ramban has criticised the State Government for neglecting Doda district in all spheres of development, resulting in more hardship to the people of this backward area. In a press statement issued here today, Mr Bali, who conducted an extensive tour of the Doda district, pointed out 98 percent of schools in the district were under-staffed, while as more than 50 others have been closed due to the shortage of staff. He also expressed his dismay that though applications for the posts of teachers in Doda district were invited about three years ago, but till date no interviews have been conducted to make the selections. He asked the Government to take immediate measures to set education system right to save the career of thousands of youth. Criticising Health Department for poor management of health care facilities, BJP leader said that most of the dispensaries and other health institutions, particularly in Ramban constituency, were without doctors. He said that life-saving drugs were not available in the rural health centres. He pressed for posting of doctors and para-medical staff to make these dispensaries functional. BJP MLA also pleaded for taking short and long term measures to tide over the problem of drinking water scarcity in Ramban, Batote, and other areas of this constituency, which has further compounded due to a long dry spell. He also demanded adequate quantity of quality ration be made available in the area. He said that survey for identification of the families living below poverty line be conducted afresh by the Food and Supplies and Revenue Department jointly. He further said that adequate funds be provided for PHE and PDD sectors to cover left out hamlets of Ramban area as also to make functional defunct schemes by appointing more linemen and supervisors. Board of Ayurvedic Systems of Medicines holds meeting Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Sept 26: A meeting of the Board of Ayurvedic/Unani Systems of Medicines was held under the chairmanship of its president Vaid Vaishno Dutt, ex-MP at his residence in which majority of the members of the Board along with Dr M S Sethi, Registrar of the Board participated. According to a press release, it was decided in the meeting that institutionally the Degree holders and qualified doctors of Indian System of Medicines recognised by the CCIM, New Delhi should be registered by the Board by depositing fee with the registrar without any delay. Renewal of registration certificates issued by the said Board in the past was also decided in the meeting to check the fake registration by the depositing fee with the Registrar within two months. Next meeting of the Board of Ayurvedic and Unani Systems of Medicines will be held on November 25. |
3 injured in road
mishaps Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Sept 26: During the last 24 hours, two persons died in separate incidents while a youth made abortive attempt to end his life by consuming some poisonous drug. Besides, three persons were critically injured in different road accidents. According to police reports, a young man committed suicide by consuming some poisonous drug at his residence. Identified as Suraj Dev Singh son of Balwant Singh of Kot was immediately shifted to Government Medical College Hospital when spotted unconscious by family members. Doctors attending him washed his stomach and provided him super-ficial treatment but he could not fight for his life and died. The cause behind this extreme step has not been reported so far. Meanwhile, a labourer died due to electric shock at Channi Himat here this afternoon. He was reportedly came in contact with live wires in an under construction house. He was rushed to hospital by some colleagues where doctors declared him brought dead. His body was lying in the mortury of the hospital for post-mortem. The deceased has been identified as Kalash son of Bhagat Ram of Channi Himat. Two brothers were critically injured when their scooter was hit from behind by speeding army vehicle at Bhalwal here this afternoon. Some passers-by immediately rushed to the spot of accident and shifted the injured to hospital where they admitted. Doctors attending them stated their condition as critical till the last report came in. They have been identified as Rakesh Kumar and Rajesh Kumar sons of Rattan Chand of Jakh. Police have registered a case in this connection and held the driver of army vehicle on charge of rash and negligent driving. In another accident, a middle aged man sustained critical injuries when his scooter was hit by fast-moving truck at Kunjwani here this morning. He was rushed to hospital where his condition was stated to be critical. he has been identified as Romesh Kumar son of Thoru Ram of Kunjwani. Police have registered a case in this connection and held the driver. A youth made an abortive attempt to end his life by consuming some poisonous drug at his residence. Identified as Ashwani son of Mangal Ram of Samba was rushed to local hospital when spotted unconscious by family members where doctors referred him to GMC Hospital in view of his deteriorating condition. Doctors attending him immediately washed his stomach and provided him superficial treatment. His condition was stated to be improving. The cause behind this extreme step is yet to be ascertained. |
