Rain forces draw in Australia vs Lanka second test

GALLE (SRI LANKA), Sept 26: Heavy rains forced the second cricket test between Australia and Sri Lanka to be abandoned for a draw on the fifth and final day here today.

The umpires and captains agreed to call off the match after rain flooded the Galle international cricket stadium.

After 19 minutes of play today, a sudden downpour forced the players back to the pavilion.

Only 4.2 overs of the scheduled 105 overs were bowled after play commenced on time under bright sunshine before an unexpected downpour brought play to a premature end.

Play was washed out yesterday too due to heavy rains.

Sri Lanka, who resumed at 44 for no loss, carried the total to 55 without loss with Sanath Jayasuriya moving on to 21 and Mervan Atapattu to 28 when play was stopped.

Sri Lanka were 44 without loss in their second innings for an overall lead of 112 runs at close of play Friday. Sri Lanka made 296 in the first innings and Australia replied with 228.

The third and final test commences at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds in Colombo on Thursday. Sri Lanka lead the three-test series 1-0 having won the first test by six wickets at Kandy. (AFP)

Indian boxers confident of good performance

KATHMANDU, Sept 26: The ten-member Indian boxing contingent, spearheaded by Asian Games gold medallist NG Dingko Singh, is confident of putting up a good show in the 8th SAF Games Boxing Competitions begining at the Shahanshah hall here tomorrow.

The Indian boxers, who had bagged an impressive haul of ten gold and two silver medals in the last SAF games in Chennai, however, have not lived upto their reputation when the games have been held outside India, managing just one gold in the three editions before Chennai.

The boys have not done so well outside because of a variety of reasons. The crowd factor plays a big role in boxing and it is only natural that the boys do well in their own country, The Indian team chief coach Gurbux Singh Sandhu said.

I am keeping my fingers crossed. The boys are all in good shape and I am only hoping that we perform better than the previous editions, the coach said.

Sandhu said he was optimistic that the Indian pugilists would return home with a few gold medals in their kitty, though the Pakistani and Nepali boxers could prove to be tough opponents.

Dingko Singh, in the bantamweight category, Gurcharan Singh in light heavy and Jitendra Kumar in the middle weight category were strong contenders for the coveted gold medal but would have to really work hard for it.

Some of the other Indian boxers like Mohammad Ali Qamar (light weight), Dalbir Singh (fly weight) and Ramanand (feather weight) and Z V Jollyson (welter weight) were also medal prospects for the country.

The weighing was done this morning taking the Indians by surprise as they were earlier informed that it would be done tomorrow.

The last minute change in programme prompted the Indians to change their schedule. The draws will be done later in the day. (PTI)

France wins doubles to reach final of Davis Cup

LONDON, Sept 26: France will play australia in the final of the Davis Cup after a convincing doubles victory.

It is the third time this decade that France has made the finals.

The French pair of Olivier Delaitre and Fabrice Santoro defeated the inexperienced Belgian team of Xavier Malisse and Christophe Van Garsse 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, giving France an insurmountable 3-0 lead in a best-of-five semifinal series.

France had taken a 2-0 lead on Friday on singles victories by Sebastien Grosjean and Cedric Pioline.

In the other semifinal, Australia took an invincible 3-1 lead over Russia, after Lleyton Hewitt’s 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 win over Yevgeny Kafelnikov today.

Kafelnikov and Andrei Olhovskiy had defeated Aussies Mark Woodforde and Sandon Stolle 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6, 8-6 earlier in doubles.

Delaitre and Santoro, wimbledon doubles semifinalists this year and both top 20 doubles players, were favored against a Belgian pair playing together for the first time. They broke Van Garsse’s service in the second game of the match, which proved enough to take the first set.

The French pair were sharper at the net and never allowed the Belgians to reach break point.

(Coach) guy (forget) told us that we had to be at the very highest level of play very quickly, Santoro said. We forced their second service and errors crept into their game.

France, which will have home court advantage in the final against Australia, is looking for its third Davis Cup triumph of the decade. The final will be played at either nice or bordeaux.

France beat the United States 3-1 in the 1991 final at Lyon and defeated Sweden 3-2 at Malmo in 1996.

In qualifying-round best-of-5 series, with the winners advancing to the world group for next year’s competition, it was Czech Republic 3, Uzbekistan 0 Finland 2, Italy 1 Zimbabwe 2, Chile 1 Britain 2, South Africa 1 Spain 3, New Zealand 0 and Germany 2, Romania 1. (AP)
