I am fit to play for India, says Azhar

NEW DELHI, Sept 17: Former India cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin today declared he had recovered from his shoulder surgery and informed the Cricket Board that he was fit enough to play international cricket.

The 36-year-old Azharuddin, attempting a comeback after undergoing the surgery in London immediately after India’s World Cup campaign ended in June, said his only problem was in throwing the ball from the deep.

I have explained my condition to Board Secretary, Mr Lele who will talk to the selectors. My shoulder is perfectly fine for me to throw from within the 30-yard circle, the veteran batsman, looking as trim as ever, said after participating in a function to mark the launch of Tissot Watches in India.

Asked why he had not submitted fitness certificate to the BCCI, the deposed captain said I didn’t want to produce a certificate that I am fit and then not be able to field in the deep. It will be embarrassing both for the board and me then.

Azhar, who led Hyderabad XI in the ongoing Moin-ud-Dowla Tournament in Hyderabad and hit 96 off 114 balls in a losing cause against India pistons on Wednesday said his shoulder will only grow better and stronger as he continued to play.

It is not a rotator cuff tear. It was only precautionary operation done to set right a painful condition of the shoulder joint, he said.

Azharuddin pointed out that neither Javagal Srinath nor Venkatesh Prasad faced any problem on returning to the side after undergoing surgeries for rotator cuff tears on their bowling shoulders. They also had trouble throwing from the deep, he added. (PTI)

America Challenge Cricket
India "A" bounce back to level series

NEW YORK, Sept 17: India "A" bounced back in superb fashion by putting up a sterling all-round display to drub Australia "A" by five wickets with 11.5 overs to spare in the second clash of the five-match America Challenge Series and levelled the score 1-1 at the Woodley Cricket field in Van Nuys, Los Angeles yesterday.

The Indians, led astutely by V V S Laxman for the second day running, bowled out the Aussies for a measly 129 in only 35 overs in the match reduced to 42 overs per side because of weather condition and then hit up 133 for 5 in reply off 30.1 overs to emerge victorious.

Man-of-the-match Mohd Kaif, the talented up batsman, led the Indian victory charge with a well-compiled 38 off 64 balls with 3 fours in adverse conditions.

He was well-supported by Karnataka’s Vijay Bharadwaj, last season’s leading run-getter in domestic cricket, who cracked an unbeaten 28 off 31 balls with two fours and a straight-field six off Aussic left-arm spinner Brad Young.

Earlier, the Aussies chose to bat after winning the toss for the second day running on an underprepared and moist pitch and straightaway walked into disaster against the seam and spin attack of the Indians to fold up cheaply.

Seamers Dodda Ganesh made early inroads to bag 2 for 12 and was well-supported by his left-arm pace partner Ashish Nehra who pcked up 2 wickets in his second spell to finish with figures of 2 for 30 in 9 overs.

Young Punjab off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and left-arm tweaker S Sriram obtained prodigious turn and bounce from the drying pitch to end up with impressive figures of 2/14 and 4/23 respectively. Only four Aussies reached double figures with Corey Richards topping the list with 22 off 37 balls.

Wicket-keeper Sameer Dighe also displayed Splendid athleticism in taking two catches and effecting a brilliant stumping from wide of the off stick to send back Brad Hodge. The victory followed India’s comprehensive loss by 77 runs to the same opponents on September 15. The third match is to be held tomorrow after today’s off day.

The Aussies sorely missed the presence of their first match hero Andrew Symonds who did not play yesterday. It was he who had rescued them from a difficult spot on Wednesday.

To compound their woes the Indian bowling, unlike in first clash, was spot on for the most part with Ganesh and Nehra creating doubts in the minds of the top order batsmen with the lift and seam movemennt they obtained from the lively pitch.

Ganesh got rid off both the openers, Ryan Campbell and skipper Adam Gilchrist for 0 and 6 respectively to reduce the Aussies to 2 for 13 in the fifth over itself.

Campbell was taken smartly with his left hand by Ganesh on his follow-through as he drove early while Laxman caught Gilchrist with a drive to his left as the Aussie skipper edged the loose-limbed bowler.

Michael De Venuto and Corey Richards set about repairing the damage with pluck and a lot of luck and saw off the two seamers. They added 39 runs for the third wicket when Harbhajan Singh struck by sending back the former who he had dismissed cheaply in the first match too. SCORECARD:

Jadeja to lead team in 4 nation event at Nairobi

BARODA, Sept 17: The national cricket selectors today named Haryana stalwart Ajay Jadeja to lead the 14-member Indian team in the four-nation event commencing at Nairobi on September 25 while including youngsters Mohammed Kaif and Vijay Bharadwaj in the list at the meeting held here.

The 19-year-old Kaif (Uttar Pradesh) and the 24-year-old Bharadwaj (Karnataka) are members of the India "A" team now in Los Angeles playing against Australia "A".

The selectors also ignored the claims of World Cup stumper Nayan Mongia after he had submitted his fitness certificate to the board and retained Andhra’s M S K Prasad following his good showing in the three-match Toronto Cricket Festival Series against the West Indies.

Axed from the 15-strong team which took part in the Toronto series were three Southpaws - Vinod Kambli, Amay Khurasia and Hrishikesh Kanitkar, apart from Delhi seamer Amit Bhandari who did not play a match.

Jadeja had submitted a fitness certificate to the Board this morning, its Secretary Jaywant Lele said after announcing the team.

The team: Ajay Jadeja (capt), Saurav Ganguly (vice-capt), S Ramesh, R Dravid, Jacob Martin, Robin Singh, Mohd Kaif, M S K Prasad (wk), B K Venkatesh Prasad, L R Shukla D Mohanty, N Chopra, Sunil Joshi and V Bharadwaj.

Jadeja did not take part in the Toronto series along with regular skipper Sachin Tendulkar and the team was led by Ganguly, who has been named his deputy for Nairobi.

Tendulkar returned home from Singapore and then flew to Australia to consult doctors at the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide about his recurring back pain. They advised him three to four weeks’ rest which ruled him out of the Nairobi event.

Jadeja was rendered hors de combat at Singapore after tearing a calf muscle and submitted a medical certificate today that he had recovered fully from the injury.

Lele, who addressed the press conference with Selection Committee Chairman Ajit Wadekar, said deposed skipper Mohd Azharuddin has not yet submitted a fitness certificate to the effect that he had fully recovered from the after-effects of his shoulder surgery in London at the end of the World Cup where he led the country.

According to Lele, Azhar was having no pain while throwing the ball from inside the 30-yard circle in limited overs cricket but still experienced discomfort while throwing from outside the field restricting area.

Asked why Mongia, till recently the first-choice stumper, was not selected despite having recovered from his wrist fracture, Wadekar said it was felt Prasad had done well at Toronto and deserved to be retained in the squad. (PTI)

DMC Cricket Trophy
Pakistan make victorious start against West Indies

TORONTO, Sept 17: Pakistan made a winning start in their campaign to lift the DMC trophy and reclaim the faith of their fans by beating West Indies narrowly by 15 runs in the first match of the three-match series here yesterday.

Still smarting under the drubbing by Australia in the World Cup final, Pakistan overcame the rustiness of a long layoff to restrict the Carribean side to 215 for nine after they had posted a respectable 230 for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 50 overs.

It’s a nice way to begin a season. Our aim now is to take the trophy home, Skipper Wasim Akram said after the match.

Sherwin Campbell (69) anchored the Carribean reply but three run-outs and tight bowling by Abdur Razzak (1/26) and Saqlain Mushtaq (1/30) in the middle overs balked his effort.

The match, 1500th in one-day history, played for most part in cold and overcast conditions at the cricket, skating and curling club, fluctuated between medioctiry and brilliance

Pakistan elected to bat and helped by some erratic bowling and poor catching recorded its highest opening partnership against West Indies as seed Anwar (63) and Wajahatullah Wasti (40) put on 131 runs in 29 overs.

Man-of-the-match Anwar displayed his deft touch, hitting nine boundaries towards the off side and off his legs during his 96-ball stay at the wicket. Wasti, circumspect at the start, settled down to give the world’s highest run-getter in an innings, fine support.

Pakistan, however, frittered away the advantage as three quick wickets fell to some stingy bowling by Jimmy Adams and Hendy Bryan in the middle overs. That put the brakes on their advance, restricting the total to 151 for 3 after 40 overs.

Inzamam-ul Haq (24) and Yousuf Youhana (25) stepped up the tempo but Pakistan really cantered towards respectability courtsey a quickfire 25 not out by Azhar Mahmood who thrashed Mervyn Dillon for 19 runs in the final over. The 24-year-old all-rounder hit a six and three fours off consecutive balls.

The West Indian bowlers conceded as many as 23 wides and 10 no balls with Reon King being the biggest culprit accounting for 12 wides and a no ball. Adams (2/19) and Dillon (2/65) were the most successful bowlers.

Defending a respectable total, Pakistani bowlers were right on target.

Waqar Younis after a long time bowled with a lot of fire and earned a breakthrough in the third over itself trapping Ridley Jacobs leg before wicket. Younis, the second highest wicket-taker in one-day cricket, made up for the loss of Shoaib Akhtar who is returning home due to a sore shoulder.

The Multan express could have picked up two more wickets in the same over but Akram and Abdur Razzak dropped sitters to spare Ricardo Powell and Campbell. Powell, going one down, did not last long and managed only 12 that included his trademark six. Campbell, however, made the most of the reprive.

The highest run-getter in the Toronto cricket festival notched his third half century and resurrected the Caribbean reply by taking the score from 31 for 2 to 99 after 27 overs before his partner, Rookie Wavell hinds (16), was run out brilliantly by Youhana. (PTI)
