Ranatunga ought to be in Lankan team, feels Akram SHARJAH, Oct 23: Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram feels that veteran Arjuna Ranatunga ought to be in the Sri Lankan team to guide the youngsters in a tight situation. "I dont know why Arjuna is not in the team...He is the best batsman in the world. He should be in the side", Wasim told reporters here last night, soon after Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 88 runs in the Coca Cola Cup Cricket Tournament final. On the coming crucial test series between Pakistan and Australia, he said "it will be a different ball game altogether in Australia".But he was confident that the series would be exciting. About the controversial decision by third umpire Steve Dunn ruling Arvinda De Silva out when the Sri Lankan batsman appeared well set for a big innings in the final, the Pakistani captain said "it was a neutral ground, neutral umpires...Everybody can commit a mistake". On the withdrawal of fast bowler Shabbir Ahmed from the Pakistan squad for Australia, Wasim said this had been done on the advice of the International Cricket Committee (ICC) on illegal deliveries. "Hopefully, Shabbir will be `ok in two weeks and back in the team". Because of Shabbirs exclusion, Waqar Younis had been included in the team. Wasim Raja, who ended his tenure as Pakistan teams coach yesterday, said "I have been extremely fortunate to have been associated with so talented boys, both on and off the field". He said allegations by "non-cricketers" of match-fixing and betting against the players were "nonsense". He clarified that Shabbir Ahmed had not been suspended but his bowling action was being monitored by the ICC panel. Raja said there was nothing wrong with Shabbirs bowling action. Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya, asked if he was missing Arjuna Ranatunga in the team, said "he is one of the most experienced players but I have to be happy with what I have ...There are 15 players". He said Sri Lankas batting in the tournament was not up to the mark though the team bowled and fielded well. Due credit must be given to the Pakistanis who were brilliant, he added. "We did not bat properly ...We lost four quick wickets. Two or three batsmen are always required to stay on at the crease". Jayasuriya declined to say anything about the controversial umpiring decisions against Arvinda De Silva and Romesh Kaluwitharna. "I cant comment on this...There are three umpires and a match referee",he said when asked if in his opinion the dubious decision against Arvinda proved to be the turning point of the match. Sri Lankan coach dave whatmore said there was no question of Sri Lankan appealing before the ICC against the umpiring decisions. Media reports, meanwhile, said umpire Steve Dunn picked up a quarrel with worldtel commentators Jonathan Agnew and Rameez Raja who were critical of his judgement against Arvinda. (UNI) |
Gandhi, Ramesh put India in command KANPUR, Oct 23: Devang Gandhi missed a richly deserved maiden test hundered but Sadagopan Ramesh was poised for his second as the two openers laid a splendid foundation to place India in the drivers seat against New Zealand on the second day of the second cricket test here today. Gandhi cracked a strokeful 88 and left-hander Ramesh was batting on 81 as their huge 162-run opening stand propelled the hosts to 212 for one wicket and left them in an ideal position to dictate the course of the match at the Green Park. India, who bundled out the Kiwis without ado in the morning, for 256 runs an hour into the day, were just 44 runs adrift of clinching the first innings lead in search of victory to move ahead in the three-match test series. Gandhi (88 - 242m, 186b, 14x4, 1x6) struck punishing drives on either side of the wicket for his second straight test half-century as he alongwith Ramesh (batting 81 - 309m, 213b, 11x4) followed upon their 137-run opening stand at Mohali in the first test. At close Rahul Dravid (batting 29) had raised exactly 50 runs for the second wicket with Ramesh. Leg-spinner Anil Kumble fulfilled Indian aspirations for quickly ending the Kiwi innings, left at 217 for seven overnight, by striking twice as the last three wicket fell in the space of just one run. Kumble finished with four for 67 to share the honours with paceman Javagal Srinath (3/62). But it was newcomers Gandhi and Ramesh who dominated the Kiwi attack from the word go and made light of any terrors held by the bone dry pitch full of cracks by playing glorious strokes, off off-spinner Paul Wiseman and left-armer Daniel Vettori in particular, to take the limelight. With three full days left and the might of Indian batting at hand, India can fully hope to drive home the advantage after having demoralised the Kiwi bowlers in their five-hour effort thus far. Gandhi and Ramesh approached the first priority of building up a solid base with aplomb in a highly fruitful partnership that lasted a shade over four hours and left India in a perfect position to exploit with three full days left to force a victory. The 24-year-old Ramesh began with a few fours before Gandhi took over after lunch to attack the Kiwi bowling of Cairns and Dion Nash who toiled in vain on a track of low bounce and were promptly punished whenever they erred in line and length. The two added 103 runs from 29 overs in the afternoon and brought up their second successive century opening stand to follow upon the 137 runs they had complied in the second innings of the first test at Mohali. Gandhi sent Cairns crashing through covers to bring up his second straight test fifty (52 - 132m, 102b, 9x4) and then used his feet to hoist off-spinner Paul Wiseman over long on for a six. The bowler, who had the mortification of seeing Craig Spearman at silly mid-off drop the batsman nearing lunch - he was on four in the team score of 28 - had little effect on either batsman from then on. Ramesh also enjoyed a let-off when skipper Stephen Fleming grassed a stiff chance to his left at slip off left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori with the batsman on 42. But neither let his concentration slip as they batted with purpose. Left-hander Ramesh, who completed his fifty immediately after tea when India were a cozy 131 for no loss (177m, 115b, 7x4), used the sweep to telling effect against wiseman as India cruised towards the 200-run mark. But Gandhi, who looked all set to earn his maiden test ton, however, fell to Flemings ploy of bringing in Nathan Astle to try his slow medium stuff to effect a breakthrough and he struck in his seventh over. Gandhi, who had showed excellent judgment in playing his punishing drives till then, needlessly chased a widish ball from Astle, only to edge straight to Fleming who had positioned himself at backward point for any such error. The skipper fumbled with the catch before managing to hold it as a dejected Gandhi made his way back to the pavilion having missed out on a golden opportunity to complete a test hundered for the second time in the series. Also, Astle was dismissing Gandhi for the second time after trapping him leg-before wicket for 75 in Mohali. The newcomer had dominated the partnership from lunch to tea, piling up 73 off the 103 runs made, as he raced past Ramesh who was on 22 at the lunch break. (PTI) |
