Come forward Sir, Please refer to the news item ''Girl Consumes Acid in School ''published in DE dated October, 5, 1999. A female student of higher secondary school attempted suicide by consuming acid in school when she was unable to bear the humiliation of punishment in the class room. In fact, it is not the first incidence of its kind but many such mishappenings occur throughout the country, quite frequently and mostly the female students are victims. Undoubtedly, it reflects the deep rooted socio-economic and psychological problems faced by the women class in general and female students in particular. Even after 50 years of Independence, the girls in Indian society are considered a liability. As she attains maturity and requires protection, the burden has to be shifted as soon as possible, and her marriage is considered as a priority. A woman is conditioned to accept a second class status in the traditional male-dominated socio-economic set up. The atrocities against women are a slur on the fair name of humanity. Inspite of so many laws, women still continue to live under the stress and strain of the society. In fact, women themselves will have to come forward and fight for their rights. They have to do it themselves because no one knows more about their problems than they themselves. Yours etc... |
Mudslinging Sir, This is in reference to the article published in your paper on 12th of October 99. ''Mudslinging to ridiculous limits'' by Dr Bharat Bhushan. In the said article Dr Bhushan has tried to convey that BJP has scored over its rivals in touching the lowest possible depth of Mud-slinging which is utterly unjustified. I would like to bring it to the notice of unaware Dr Bharat Bhushan the most unquotable quote in the just conducted elections made by Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad that the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was addicted to woman and wine. He also questioned his patriotic credentials. Even Nehru Ji and Indira Ji held him in high esteem and never levelled such derogatory remarks against him as does today by Azad. Kapil Sahib being the other character at the helm of affairs who seems to have been given a charge of opposing Vajpayee and others in every press briefing. Mr Sibal even called Mr Vajpayee ''a liar'' not withstanding the widely known fact that Vajpayee is still the most honest and truthful among the present lot of politicians dominating the scene. Yours etc...
Fulfill demands Sir, I would like to thank Mr Abdul Qayoom, Chairman of the J&K Teachers Forum who has done a good job for the benefit of teacher community. It is very unfortunate that despite assurance given by the Government from time to time and even on the floor of the house, nothing concrete has been done so far. The teachers boycotted the Board examination last year to press the Government to fulfill their just and genuine demands and it has only after the assurance of the Government, the boycott call was withdrawn and the examination of various classes were conducted smoothly, with this hope that the Government will issue the SRO, but unfortunately nothing happened. The teachers again threatened to boycott the examination and it was on 21.7.99 a meeting was held under the chairmanship of Dr Farooq Abdullah in which Minister of Education, Minister of Finance, Minister of Higher Education, Commissioner of Education, and Chairman Board of School Education were also present. The demands put-forward by the Teachers Forum were accepted in principle and it was agreed upon that the SRO will be issued within a short span of time. But to our bad luck, the Government was unable to issue SRO till 9th of October 99 the date from which Secondary School Examinations were supposed to commence. It is only after Government failed to keep its promise, the Teachers Forum issued yet another boycott call of examination. It is surprising to hear that Chairman Board of School Education has authorised D Cs of various districts in Kashmir to conduct examinations. Although chairman Board of School Education present in the meeting on 21.7.99 when the agreement was made yet he has issued a notification authorising DCs to conduct examination by asking lecturers and Headmasters to conduct the same. In this connection, I would like to inform the concerned authorities that they will not be able to create a wedge between the teachers and the lecturers/headmasters and I hope they will issue soon a call supporting the cause of teachers as they have done it previously. I on behalf of the teacher community in Jammu, assure Chairman of the J&K Teachers Forum Mr Abdul Qayoom that the teachers are ready for any struggle announced by the Forum in near future till our genuine demands are fulfilled. One day Dharna call on 9.10.99 in Jammu by the Graduate and Post graduate Forum was a step towards its support to J&K Teachers Forum. I request the Chairman J&K Teachers Forum to go ahead as all the teachers of J&K State are with him in this genuine struggle, and I would also request to Lecturers/Headmasters Forum to co-operate with the teachers so that the goal is achieved by us. Yours etc.. |
