Wasim Akram dismisses report on match-fixing DUBAI, Oct 20: Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram has dismissed media reports that a judicial probe into betting and match-fixing charges had recommended life bans and hefty fines on leading players, saying his boys were not bothered. " It does not bother us," Akram said reacting to Pakistan media reports that the Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum panel had recommended stiff penalty on top players. Akram said speculative media reports only tended to strenghten the resolve of his teammates to perform better, in obvious reference to his teams brilliant run in reaching the final at the tri-nation tournament in Sharjah. " I have had a word with the Pakistan Board in the morning and my worries are over," he told the Khaleej Times. `` The boys are looking forward to the Australian tour. As far as we are concerned, nothing has changed. He admitted such reports did affect the players but said we dont take it seriously as nothing is official about it. The Karachi-based Daily The News had reported yesterday that the Commissions findings submitted to President Mohammad Rafiq Tarar had recommended life ban and heavy fine on veteran batsman Salim Malik and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed. The Daily claimed the Commission had also recommended Akram be stripped of captaincy and that a close watch should be kept on his activities in the future. Qayyum was also for imposing fines ranging from Rs 2 to Rs 5 lakh on Akram, Ijaz Ahmed, Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul Haq as he believed there was proof they were not straight with their statements, The News claimed. Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed also dismissed the press report. I have seen the report on the internet and all I can say is that it is a speculative leak of recommendations. It is not official. Therefore, nothing has changed as far as our forthcoming tour of australia is concerned, he said. " I cannot stop people from speculating. The team will be selected tomorrow," Saeed, who will also be managing the team in Australia, said. Shoiab Akhtar is arriving from London and he will undergo a fitness test in the presence of all three selectors Col Naushad Ali, Rameez Raja and Abdul Raqeeb and team coach Richard Pybus, he said. The 23-year-old Akhtar, rated the fastest bowler in the world, withdrew on the eve of the Toronto series against the West Indies last month complaining of shoulder problem and has not played since the May-June World Cup in England. Saeed said Javed Zaman, member of the PCB ad hoc committee and Col Naushad Ali, Director of Cricket Affairs in Pakistan, were running the board in the absence of the ad hoc committee chairman Mujeebur Rehman. The whereabouts of Mujeeb, younger brother of Saifur Rahman, who headed the accountability cell before the military coup in Pakistan were unknown, the Khaleej Times said. The manager said the decision not to play Wasim Akram, who apparently had a pulled muscle, and Anwar yesterday in the final league tie against West Indies was taken the night before the match and not due to the adverse media report. Pak cricket team seems under mental pressure SHARJAH, Oct 20: The Pakistani cricket team, preparing for the Cola Cup Cricket Tournament here on Friday, seems to be under intense mental pressure following a report in the Pakistani media that the one-man commission on match-fixing and betting allegations has recommended life bans and heavy fines on some leading players. Skipper Wasim Akram tried to put up a brave front in the face of fresh allegations against the players while team manager Yawar Saeed described the news report as "speculative". "It does not bother us," Wasim said when asked to comment on the report in the leading Karachi daily, "The News," that the Justice Malik Mohammed Qayyum Commission has recommended life ban and heavy fines on Salim Malik and Mushtaq Ahmed. The skipper told the local media "I have had a word with the board and my worries are over. The boys are looking forward to the australian tour. As far as we are concerned, nothing has changed." He admitted that such reports affected the players. "But then we dont take it seriously since nothing is official about it." According to the news report, the recommendations of the Commission were based on its findings that the players were involved at some stage in the "shady business of fixing matches and betting." The News report said the Commission also recommended that Akram should be stripped of captaincy and "a close watch should be kept on his activities in future." "Justice Qayyum, in his findings, also recommended that fines ranging from Rs 2,00,000 to Rs 5,00,000 be imposed on Wasim Akram, Ijaz Ahmed, Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul Haq as he believes that enough material has come before the Commission to convince it that they were not entirely straight in their statements given to it," the news report said. Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed said "I have seen the news report on the internet and all I can say is that it is a speculative leak of recommendations". Saeed, who will continue as manager of the team for the Australian tour, said "I cant stop people from speculating. Since the report is not official, nothing has changed. The team (for Australia) will be selected on Thursday". The Pakistan team manager said he was in constant touch with the board but at point of time was the topic of Justice Qayyums recommendations discussed. He clarified that Javed Zaman, a member of the Pakistan Cricket Board ad-hoc committee, and Col Naushad Ali, who is a Director of Cricket Affairs in Pakistan, were running the board in the absence of Mujeebur Rehman, Chairman of the Cricket Board Ad-hoc Committee, whose whereabouts are not known since the military take-over in the country. He agreed that the players were human beings and could get affected by speculative media reports. Despite all this, the morale of the team was high and the boys were looking forward to the australian tour. (UNI) |
