Huge Indian target has Kiwis
fighting doggedly MOHALI, Oct 13 : New Zealand batted doggedly on the penultimate day today in a bid to stave off defeat against India which had set them a tough target of 374 to win the first cricket test here after centuries by Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. Making a remarkable comback, India - shot out for 83 in the first innings - piled up 505 for three in their second knock. The massive score was achieved mainly through Dravid (144), Tendular (126 not out) and a quick-fire unbeaten 64). By stumps, the Kiwis had made 80 for the loss with Matt Horne and Craig Spearman battling it out on 26 and 30 respectively. Horne and Spearman added 56 runs for the second wicket after paceman Javagal Srinath had dismissed Mathew Bell for seven. The Indian spinners toiled in vain on a pitch of low bounce and the Kiwi pair were ever vigilant to deny the hosts any further breakthrough. The stylish Dravid and no nonsense Tendulkar played perfect knocks for their teams cause as the hosts completed a dramatic turnaround in fortunes after a forgettable first day to set a Kiwis an virtually unattainable target to win or the more challenging task of playing out eight hours plus the mandatory overs to save the match which they began with a bang. But the day belonged to Dravid (144 - 418 m, 327 b, 18x4) and tendulkar (126 no - 397 m, 248 b, 14x4) who notched up back to back hundreds in a splendid 229-run third wicket stand. Tendulkar cracked his 20th century and Dravid his sixth overall and first at home - after making 124 not out and 107 respectively against Sri Lanka at Colombo in February in the last Test India played. The Indian skipper then came up with a racy 95-run unbroken fourth wicket stand with an enterprising Ganguly (64 no - 70 m, 75 b, 10x4, 1x6), who flourished after Nathan Astle dropped a return catch when he was on zero, before the declaration came as expected. But the Mohali wicket proved to be of low bounce and both the Kiwi batsmen reflected their new-found confidence in baulking the Indians to leave the match interestingly poised. Resuming at the overnight score of 303 for two, Dravid and Tendulkar showed a sense of purpose as they added 115 runs in the 28 overs in the morning session, in sharp contrast to their laboured effort at consolidation yesterday. Dravid drives through the straight field and cut left-arm spinner Vettori delectably to reach his first test century on Indian soil in the fifth over of the day, cutting Vettori to the backward point fence. His hundred came in 328 minutes off 254 balls and was studded with 12 fours.(PTI) |
Martin, Kuerten tumble out in first round VIENNA, Oct 13: Second seed Todd Martin blamed an unexpectedly slow court for his first round defeat in the Austrian Indoor Tournament yesterday. Martin went down 7-6 6-7 6-4 to unseeded Czech Jiri Novak and Goran Ivanisevic eliminated the tournaments number three, Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten, 6-1 6-7 6-4. French Open finalist Andrei Medvedev had little trouble beating wild card Oliver Marach of Austria 6-4 6-2. Martin, who has not competed since losing to fellow American Andre Agassi in five sets at the final of the U.S. Open four weeks ago, said: "I came here expecting an indoor court but instead it was more like a clay court very slow." "Its a bit frustrating when you are unable to rely on your bread and butter. It was disconcerting and put me in a strange position." "But Im not complaining and saying I dont like it. I think we should play such surfaces more often." Martin, a semifinalist here in 1996 and 1998, said his lengthy break was not the reason for his loss. "I was tired. I needed the break. But its not why I lost. Its never that heartbreaking to lose to a player who played a really good match like Novak did," added the world number four. Novak, ranked 34th in the world, almost wrapped up victory in straight sets but Martin saved a matchpoint by hammering in three consecutive aces to level at 5-5. Ivanisevic, who posted his best result of an otherwise disappointing year by reaching last weeks semifinals in Basle, said a more relaxed attitude to the sport had helped him. "I was perhaps too good and like a robot. I was putting too much pressure on myself. Its important to go out and have some fun," he said. "Now, when I want to practice I do and when I dont I go shopping or sightseeing." (REUTERS) |
Pak cricket team to go back to its logo SHARJAH, Oct 13: The Pakistani cricket team will go back to its famous "star logo" when it begins its campaign in the Coca Cola Cup Championship with a match against the West Indies here tomorrow. This was decided after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) conducted a survey to know the public opinion about the new logo, depicting a batsman and a bowler in action, introduced last month on a trial basis. "The public response to the new logo was not favourable so the PCB decided to go back to its original logo", assistant manager of the Pakistani team Sahebzada Ahmed Khan told reporters here last evening. Pakistani skipper Wasim Akram appeared relaxed and exuded confidence that the team would perform well in the Sharjah Tour-nament. "Though we just had three one-day international games in Toronto since the World Cup, we are looking forward to the challenges ahead", he said. Wasim said "Sharjah has always been a special assignment for us but this time it is even more important as the tournament is a prelude to the tough test series against Australia". He said the games against both Sri Lanka and the West Indies were not going to be easy as they were top teams in the world. "But I am sure the boys will not take too much time to get back into form". Pakistan coach Wasim Raja said "we have been preparing well for the tournament and all the boys are fully fit and ready to take on their rivals". The spotlight in the Pakistani team will be on tall pacer Shabbir Ahmed in the absence of "Rawalpindi Express" Shoaib Ahmed. (UNI) |

Singapore Open SINGAPORE, Oct 13: Indian tennis ace Leander Paes struggled with his first serves and despite playing an aggresive game, bowed to fleet-footed American Michael Chang in the first round of the 725,000 Singapore Open here. Doubles specialist Paes was totally at loss in the first set as he was broken twice - once dropping his serve at love -before losing to former French Open champion Chang 6-1 6-3 in just a shade over an hour. Wildcard Paes, top seeded with Mahesh Bhupathi in the doubles tournament, double-faulted in his first service game before the former world No. 2 came up with blistering returns to subdue the Indians charge. Unseeded Chang raced to a commanding 5-0 lead in the first set before paes, down 0-30 in the sixth game, charged at the net and made the American run around the court to set up first game point for himself. Paes wasted no time and blasted a down the middle ace to win his first game. Chang, who had made his intentions clear right from the word go when he started the battle by serving an ace in the opening game, began the seventh game with a double fault. That was the only glimmer of hope for paes to stage a rally but Chang caught him on the wrong foot by playing longer rallies as unforced errors crept into Paes game. Serving for the set with two setpoints, Chang caught Paes in a clever manouevre. As Paes approached the net, Chang whipped a forehand return too hard and the Indian just managed to push it into the net. Paes put up a fight in the second set holding his serve comfortably as he adopted aggressive approach. The Indian tried to take every return on his forehand which eventually scripted his downfall. Chang held his serve in the second game and then broke Paes in the next as the Indian wasted an ace, his second, to hand the initiative back to the American. The 27-year-old Chang, with a 21-18 win loss record this year and without any title to his name, looked in devastating form that made him one of the youngest grand slam champions. The right-handed American won the fourth service game at love when Paes pushed a backhand return into the net when 0-40 down. Some semblance of fight was restored when Paes won his two service games though he struggled a bit. Paes best effort to tackle Chang came in the sixth game of the second set as the game went to duece, Paes chipping a crosscourt volley to win a point. Chang earned an advantage soon with a big serve and then won his game with a backhand volley. High drama was witnessed in the seventh game as Paes, after being 40-0 on serve, gave away two easy points and seeing an opening, Chang whipped a forehand curling down-the-line return that was too much for Paes to handle. Paes, however, won two successive points to hold his service. Chang won the next one and faced with a situation of serving to save the match, Paes, playing well below his potential, did not take any unnecessary risks as his real campaign lay in the doubles tournament. Chang completed the formalities with a forehand crosscourt winner for a 6-1 6-3 verdict. (PTI) |
