Indian batsmen make slow consolidation MOHALI, Oct 12: Rahul Dravid and skipper Sachin Tendulkar batted painstakingly to put on an unbeaten century partnership as India ambled towards a position of strength reaching 303 for the loss of two wickets in their second innings against New Zealand at close on the third day of the first test today. On a day of extremely dull batting display influenced by fear of yet another collapse, India added only 188 runs to their overnight tally of 115 runs for the loss of only two batsmen - openers, debutant Debang Gandhi (75) and Sadagopan Ramesh (73) - as they finished 171 runs ahead. The 25-year-old Dravid and captain Tendulkar both began in extremely tentative fashions, but played some delightful shots in the final session to build upon the excellent 137-run opening stand established by the inexperienced duo and have added 122-run for the unbroken third wicket. Dravid was well in sight of a richly-deserved sixth century batting on 87 (310 min, 240 balls, 8x4) while Tendulkar fetched most of his runs towards the end of the day to remain unbeaten on 54 (217 m, 149 b, 7x4) at stumps. Chastened after being dismissed for a paltry 83 runs in the first innings, India achieved the objective of erasing the 132-run lead of the Kiwis without any hiccups but were extremely cautious as only 51 and 55 runs came off 31 overs each in the first four hours of play. India were expected to drive home the advantage once they wiped off the deficit, but 24-year-old Ramesh went immediately after giving a tame return catch to left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, dashing hopes of converting his fourth test fifty into his second century. At lunch India were on 166 for one and 28-year-old debutant Gandhi looked good for a memorable century after being grassed by second slip Nathan Astle off paceman Chris Cairns at the same total at which which Ramesh was dismissed. Gandhi, then on 59, fell seven overs into the afternoon session trapped leg before by Astles gentle seamer that swung in and straightened to strike the front pad low as he stretched forward in defence. Any hopes of fireworks from Tendulkar, who joined the totally defensive Dravid, were belied, as the Indian skipper survived a clutch of loud appeals for leg before and spent an uncharacteristic stretch of almost one full hour and 34 balls without scoring a run. The 26-year-old Tendulkar, who made 18 in the first innings and playing his first match after a month long lay-off to tend to his troublesome back, was given a torrid time by paceman Dion Nash, who bowled beautifully with the old ball. Nash twice had confident leg before appeals turned down by Sri Lankan umpire Peter Manuel and the batting maestro almost played on. But Tendulkar, with responsibility of captaincy on his shoulders, never lost concentration as the pair pushed the score to 221 for two at tea break. The 20-year-old bespectacled Vettori, considered their key bowler by the Kiwi camp, sent down a marathon 36 overs today, including 26 overs for a meagre 36 runs, 13 maidens included, in one stretch starting midway through the morning as skipper Stephen Fleming persisted with the old ball for 166 overs before changing it four overs after tea at 234 for two. Dravid, who reached his 17th fifty in his 50th test innings at the stroke of tea, and Tendulkar, however took the new ball as the signal to discard the self-imposed shackles as they played some attractive strokes. The 26-year-old Karnataka batsman, who struck 190 and 103 not out in the third and final test in Hamilton on Indias 1998-99 tour of New Zealand, superbly straight-drove, cut and pulled Nash as he struggled for length with the new ball. Tendulkar joined the act, cutting Astle - who used the seam exceedingly well earlier - before square-driving and cutting cairns to reach his 22nd fifty. The tiring Vettori soldiered on, but was not as successful in his attempt to tie down the two star batsmen as he was early on. Left-arm paceman Shayne Oconnor, who had dismissed Tendulkar in the first essay, was also brilliantly pulled by the Indian skipper through mid-wicket as India brought up the 300-run mark towards close. Dravid has stayed on for 10 minutes over five hours (240 balls, 8x4) while Tendulkars vigil has lasted just over three and half hours (149 balls, 7x4) with determination writ all over the effort. Cola Cup Championship SHARJAH, Oct 12: Exciting cricket is on the cards when the three-nation Coca Cola Cup Championship begins here tomorrow with Sri Lanka taking on the West Indies in the opening encounter. However, most cricket buffs will watch with keen interest the performance of Pakistan, the third team featuring in the tournament, as they are leaving for Australia straight from here to play a crucial test and one-day series against the world champions. The Australia tour provides Pakistan an opportunity to avenge their humiliating defeat by the Kangaroos in the World Cup final. All the three teams are in fine fettle, having tasted success in their recent outings. The Sri Lankan and West Indies teams have already arrived here while Pakistan reach late this evening. Both Sri Lankan and West Indians had practice at the nets at the lovely Sharjah ground. Buoyed by their historic win against Australia in the just-concluded test and one-day matches, Sri Lanka, under the leadership of master blaster Sanath Jayasuriya, look a much reformed team with many of the youngsters in the side determined to prove their worth. An upbeat Jayasuriya said I know it will be a tough assignment as both Pakistan and the West Indies are top teams in the world but right now our team is combining well". He said "the past is behind us. There is no problem in the team and I am getting support from all the senior players in the squad". The inclusion of Arvinda De Silva will certainly add to the strength of the team. Sri Lankan coach Dave Whatmore, who has played a pivotal role in changing the fortunes of the team, said "we are playing well and are confident. Pakistan is a little stronger and you cannot underestimate the West Indies, especially when you have a player like Lara playing". True to his reputation, Lara struck the second fastest century in one-day cricket against Bangladesh just before coming here. He reached the three-figure mark in just 45 balls as his team thrashed Bangladesh 2-0 in a two-match series. A relaxed Lara told newspersons that "at the moment, we are a team in the making. There is a lot of young blood in the team and in this tournament we are not expecting an easy ride as both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are top sides and both have been producing their best recently". Toronto, he said, was a big disappointment as the West Indies could not put its act together and lost to India 1-2 and subsequently went down 0-3 to Pakistan. "I hope things will change a bit this time round", Lara said. With Wasim Akram again at the helm of affairs, Pakistan have their job cut out as they have to prove that they have left behind the memories of their drubbing at the hands of Australia in the World Cup final. They have already blanked the West Indies 3-0 in the Toronto DCM series recently. The Pakistani team for the Australia tour is to be chosen after the Sharjah Cup. New Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mujeebur Rehman Khan, who was in Dubai for the International Cricket Council (ICC) governing body meeting, said the World Cup depression was over and "we are now on the right track". Sri Lanka take on the West Indies in the first match while Pakistan meet the Caribbeans on October 14. Pakistan and Sri Lanka will play on October 15. The West Indies will have their return match with Sri Lanka on October 17. It will be Pakistan Vs Sri Lanka on October 18 and Pakistan Vs the West Indies on October 19. The final will be played on October 22. The Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS), the organisers of the tournament, said all matches will be played under floodlights from 1430 hrs local time (1600 hrs ist). The winner of the tournament will collect 50,000 dollars while the runner-up will get 30,000 dollars. The team finishing third will receive 20,000 dollars. Also, there will be many individual prizes at stake. The man of the match will get 1,000 dollars while the man of the final will receive 1,500 dollars. The beneficiaries this year are Mushtaq Ahmed and Aamir Malik of Pakistan and Malcolm Marshall of the West Indies. Each of them will get 35,000 dollars. he CBFS will also make a contribution to the players fund of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board. The matches will be officiated by Steve Dunne (New Zealand), David Shephard (England), Dug Cowie (New Zealand) and Peter Van Der Marwe (South Africa). (UNI) |

NZs Larsen retires early due to arthritis WELLINGTON, Oct 12: Injuries and worsening arthritis in his right foot have robbed veteran New Zealand bowler Gavin Larsen of his planned final cricket season in front of the home fans. Larsen, 37, has retired immediately because of the health problems rather than his previously planned retirement at the end of the next Southern season, NZ cricket said in a statement. "One thing I could never live with would be lowering my personal standards through playing for the sake of playing," Larsen said in the statement. "My instinct is that I would be unable to attain the standards I expect of myself this coming season." Larsen is the longest serving player in the New Zealand team, having played 121 one-day internationals, his specialist arena, and eight tests. In his nine years of one-dayers, "the postman" for his always accurate deliveries collected 113 wickets at an average of 35.38 runs, for an economy rate of 3.76. "He has been our most consistent performer in the one-day game for many years, always giving 100 per cent and proving to be New Zealands most economical one-day bowler of the past decade," said NZ cricket general manager Tim Murdoch. NZ cricket said it had planned to call up Larsen to join the New Zealand tour of India for a one-day series following the current test series. (REUTERS) |
