Srinath, openers help India stage comeback

MOHALI, Oct 11: Openers Sadagopan Ramesh and debutant Debang Gandhi cracked half-centuries in an invaluable unbeaten stand of 115 to build on a splendid haul of six for 45 by fiery paceman Javagal Srinath as India wrested the initiative on the second day of their first cricket test against New Zealand here today.

The 21-year-old Ramesh, who struck a chancy unbeaten 58, and Gandhi (batting 52) overcame their first innings disappointments by lifting India to within 17 runs of overhauling the deficit of 132 runs at the PCA stadium.

Both Ramesh, who maintained his consistency by cracking his fourth fifty in only his fifth test (193 mins, 166balls, 7x4) and the 28-year-old Bengal batsman Gandhi (193m, 138b, 4x4) did nothing spectacular but put the ineffective Kiwi attack on a track that had eased out in perspective after dismissing New Zealand for 215 in their first innings 40 minutes after the lunch break.

It was 30-year-old Srinath, making a strong return after he was dropped recently on poor form, who brought India back into the match after their dismal first innings show of 83 all out and the failure of both paceman Venkatesh Prasad and leg spinner Anil Kumble to provide a breakthrough in the morning.

The Mysore-born paceman produced a brilliant display of fast bowling on a track not exactly helpful to cut through the Kiwi batting which saw the last seven wicketes tumble for just 59 runs.

The tall fast bowler captured his sixth five wicket haul in tests - the third consecutive following efforts of 5 for 46 and 8 for 86 against Pakistan in the Asian Championship in Calcutta in February - and also emerged the highest test wicket-taker for India against New Zealand, his tally of 26 in his seventh test surpassing Kapil Sev’s 25 in 10 outings.

India began the day with the daunting task of having to curtail the Kiwi innings, which resumed at 119 for three, but eventually ended on atleast level terms confident of piling up a big score on the third day.

Both Gandhi and Ramesh, who failed to score in the first essay, handled the pressure well in the early stages as neither Dion Nash, who captured six for 27 yesterday in a grand Kiwi seam bowling effort, nor Chris Cairns nor left-arm Shayne O’connor could make any impact on the eased out pitch.

The left-handed Ramesh, who has made an impact since making his debut against Pakistan in the first test on his home turf in Chennai with four fifties and a century (143) against Sri Lanka in the last test India played at Colombo in February, was lucky not to be dismissed when on 20, 41 and 43 but maintained his concentration to keep India on the path of recovery.

Lone slip fielder Nathan Astle failed to take the edge off left arm spinner Daniel Vettori, who bowled a restricting line with his fastish stuff. Skipper Stephen Fleming was the biggest culprit when he dropped Ramesh to the dismay of Nash and then failed to hold another chance he offered in the bowler’s next over.

The reprives came as a big surprise after the fine catching in the slip cordon in the first innings, but Ramesh displayed his fluent timing to send Nash twice to the square-leg fence and then struck the paceman for another authoritative boundary towards the end of the day’s play, after bringing up his half-century.

Gandhi played a fine supportive role showing his ability to execute shots by twice driving Cairns through extra-cover and then cutting Vettori and driving him straight for fours.

Ramesh reached his fifty first followed by Gandhi, who vindicated the faith reposed in him by the selectors, with a confident show.

A frustrated Fleming brought on astle to bowl his medium-pace stuff, but on a wicket which predicts help for the spinners in the next three days, there was hardly any help for seamers late in the day.

Earlier, Stephen Fleming (43 - 212m, 147b, 3x4) with his watchful approach and a more aggressive Nathan Astle (45 -96m, 75b, 6x4) added 57 runs for the fourth wicket in the morning to raise signs of posting a big total.

Skipper Tendulkar’s ploy of employing Prasad, who only gave away needless runs by pitching too short, and leg-spinner Anil Kumble who seemed to struggle to find his usual rhythm under pressure to perform.

But Srinath’s advent in the 10th over of the day, however, changed the complexion of the game. He struck off his very third ball trapping left-handed Fleming plumb in front with sheer pace and two overs later beat Astle all ends up for Kumble to complete a tumbling catch at gully off a thick edge.
