Result due to inability to project Prime
Ministerial candidate

CHENNAI, Oct 9: The "inability" of the Congress to project a Prime Ministerial candidate was one of the reasons for the Front’s poor showing at the hustings, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalitha said today.

The mistake on the part of the Congress in not projecting a Prime Ministerial candidate had a telling effect among the electorate, she told reporters here.

On Congress spokesman Kapil Sibal’s remarks that his party might review its alliance with the AIADMK and RJD, in the light of electoral reverses in Tamil Nadu and Bihar, she said it only showed his ‘immaturity’. This only proved that he is a political novice, she said.

Our alliance with the Congress was only for the Lok Sabha polls and I would not like to say anything more, she said in reply to a question on whether the AIADMK would continue it’s alliance with the Congress.

On party’s performance, she said: It is not a setback or defeat for the party. We have once again proved that we are the single largest party in the State.

Jayalalitha said AIADMK polled 69,92,005 votes, which accounted for 25.65 per cent against DMK’s 62,98,607 or 23.12 per cent. This has once again proved that we are still the largest party in Tamil Nadu. We have our vote bank intact.

The former Chief Minister said though DMK front secured 47.13 per cent of votes, the DMK’s share in it was minimum. But the AIADMK had garnered the maximum share of 41.67 per cent in its Front, she claimed.

The results would have been different if the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) had joined the AIADMK Front, she said.

Asked for her comments on the TMC, she said: I will not make any negative or postive comments on that party.

Jaya said the victory of AIADMK Front candidates in the bye-elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly showed that people disapproved the policies of the DMK Government. Whenever the Assembly elections are held, we will win hands down, she said.

On the TMC’s claim to bring back Kamaraj rule in the State in 2001, she said even Kamaraj, when alive, was unable to do so. It will be MGR rule after the next Assembly elections in the State, she added. (PTI)

Kalyan Singh ready to abide by PM’s decision

NEW DELHI, Oct 9: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister kalyan singh today met Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and told him that he would abide by whatever decision the party leadership would take in context of BJP’s electoral debacle in the state.

After the 45-minute meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence, Singh told reporters that as the head of the BJP Government in the state, I don’t blame anyone or hold anybody responsible. I take the full moral responsibility.

Singh made it clear to Vajpayee that whatever decision the party high command took, as a disciplined soldier, I will abide by it gladly.

He said he would review the constituency-wise performance of the party with state and central leaders.

Singh, who had met party president Kushabhau Thakre last night, said the state unit of BJP, its president Rajnath Singh and ministers including Lalji Tandon had done a good job.

Asked whether any assurance was given to him by the Prime Minister, he said it is for the central leadership to take a decision.

Singh congratulated Vajpayee for his personal victory and for the success of the national democratic alliance under his leadership and expressed the hope that the Government would last its full term and transform the country.

Later, he met Home Minister L K Advani and discussed the party’s performance in the state.

Earlier, UP Minister Kalraj Mishra met Advani and reviewed the political situation in the state.

Singh told reporters after meeting Advani that caste factor and Tactical voting by muslims were two major factors which contributed to BJP’s poor performance in UP.

Asked why the Vajpayee factor did not work in UP, the Chief Minister said this factored was, of course, there but the undercurrent of caste politics proved to be much stronger.

He said the BJP state unit would carry out an in-depth constituency-wise analysis and take remedial measures.

The poor performance of BJP in the state has thrown up a serious challenge and we will face it, he said adding that he had not been summoned by the party high command and that he had come to the capital on his own to congratulate Vajpayee and Advani for carrying the party to victory in the polls. AP voters endorse Naidu’s claim to NTR’s legacy

HYDERABAD, Oct 9: The battle over political legacy of NTR has ended in Andhra Pradesh with Telugu Desam chief N Chandrababu Naidu staging a stupendous comeback to power and decimating the other two claimants to the legacy — NTR TDP and Anna TDP.

By comprehensively rejecting the two off-shoots of TDP fighting for the party patriarch’s legacy, the Andhra voters delivered a final verdict on the bitter family row that was one of the poll issues.

So severe was the drubbing that both NTR TDP, headed by NTR’s widow Lakshmi Parvathi, and Anna TDP led by his son N Harikrishna lost deposits in all the seats they contested.

Parvathi, whose perceived interference in party affairs had led to a revolt by Naidu against his father-in-law four years ago, lost deposit in both Sompet and Eluru constituencies along with her other candidates in 77 seats.

Despite the poll-eve promise of reviving NTR’s pet welfare schemes including total prohibition and the Rs two per kg rice scheme, Harikrishna, the one-time comrade-in-arms of Naidu, faced total rout and himself lost deposit in Gudivada constituency, once represented by his father.

"We have never deviated from the core ideology enunciated by NTR but only made certain modifications in tune with changing times," TDP general secretary C Ramachandraiah said. (PTI)

Anti-incumbency, Akali split plus more to
poor SAD-BJP show

JALANDHAR, Oct 9: Punjab’s ruling SAD-BJP alliance has been severely jolted by the poor showing in Lok Sabha elections where the anti-incumbency factor coupled with the split within Akali Dal blunted the combine’s bid to woo the voters with Kargil’ and the teflon-image of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

The ruling alliance, which had won 13 Lok Sabha seats in 1998 could manage only three this time with two — Tarn Taran and Ferozepur — going to Akali Dal and BJP retaining Gurdaspur, though with a margin that plummeted from 1.06 lakh to a mere 1399 votes.

While Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has blamed his Bete Noire G S Tohra for allegedly playing into Congress’ hands by splitting the Akali vote bank, political analysts here said the alliance has more to account for.

The Tohra-backed Sarb Hind Akali Dal candidates have got only 4.66 per cent of the vote share

while the ruling combine’s vote share has come down from 47.63 per cent in 1998 to 37.74 per cent, Points out Jatinder Pannu, a veteran political analyst.

It is, however, apparent that the third front candidates did spoil the Badal camp’s plans even though only S S Mann of this front won from Sangrur while all the rest (12) came third or even lower and many forfeited their deposits.

A resurgent Congress, which had put up an impressive show in last year’s Adampur by-election and felt boosted by the split within Akali Dal as Tohra floated his shad, went all out focusing on alleged corruption, fiscal mismanagement and what it called Badal’s family rule.

The strategy paid off with the party romping home with eight seats with one going to its ally, the CPI.

Congress’ winning spree was matched by the swing in its vote share which jumped from 25.85 in 1998 to 38.44 per cent this time, a gain of 12.59 per cent.

In fact, since Congress had an alliance with the left parties who fought the two seats of Bhatinda and Sangrur, one should look at their collective share which comes to about 44.35 per cent, better even than the 44.62 per cent figure posted by the Congress-BSP-Left combine which had contested in 1998, said Pannu.

The defeat of Union Minister of State Sukhbir Singh Badal in Faridkot at the hands of Jagmeet Singh Brar of Congress came only with a margin of 5164 but it struck a severe blow for the Akalis as Badal had pumped all resources into Faridkot to ensure his son’s victory.

Sukhbir trailed in five of the nine assembly segments in Faridkot, with Brar bouncing back even in Muktsar segment with over 12,000 votes lead, thus putting a question mark on the credibility of former Chief Minister and Congress leader Harcharan Singh Brar who had overtly and covertly supported Badal’s son and is now a target of flak from jagmeet.

The BSP, which had aligned with the Congress in 1998, had formed a truck with Tohra-led Third Front this time and unsuccessfully contested three seats of Phillaur, Hoshiarpur and Ferozepur, returning a vote share figure of 3.84 per cent.

The other Akali Union Minister Surjit Singh Barnala, known for his suave image, lost to Simranjit Singh Mann, who made a U-turn in image management and pushed hard to prove his credentials to the minority hindu community in Sangrur.

While Badal never mentioned the long-pending issues like river waters, transfer of Chandigarh and other Punjabi speaking areas to Punjab and kept stressing the achievements of Vajpayee Goverment and the inexperience of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, some leaders say it eroded the party’s claim to the traditional vote bank of devout Sikhs, many of whom fell for Tohra’s Akal Takht plank.

Tohra, who was joined by sacked Akal Takht Jathedar Ranjit Singh, asked sikhs not to vote for Badal-backed candidates as the CM was guilty of denigrating the authority of supreme temporal seat and had humiliated Ranjit Singh wrongfully. There was never any serious bid by Badal to counter this line of propaganda, said a leader close to him. (PTI)

National executive meet on Nov 13
BJP to analyse setbacks in UP, Punjab, K’taka

NEW DELHI, Oct 9: The national executive of BJP will meet here for two days from November 13 for an indepth analysis of the party’s performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections and the setback suffered by it in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Karnataka.

There was need for soul searching and introspection on the party’s performance in these States, the party leadership felt at a meeting of the central office bearers here today.

Briefing reporters after a two-hour long meeting chaired by party president Kushabhau Thakre, party spokesman Venkaiah Naidu said after a detailed analysis, the party would initiate corrective steps to strengthen itself in these States where it had not performed to expectation.

He said the meeting noted that Congress had been punished by the people for its negative role and destabilising designs reducing its strength to lowest level of 112.

He said Congress should now draw lesson from this and learn to respect peoples mandate, adding Left parties and others should also learn a lesson from the electoral humiliation they suffered.

Naidu said this being the first meeting after the elections, the party expressed deep gratitude to the people for reposing their faith in BJP and its allies.

He said the party was conscious of the fact that this mandate brings greater responsibility on the parties in the NDA to provide stable and effective Government.

Naidu said it was for the first time since 1984 that an incumbent Prime Minister or party has been given a renewed mandate which is by itself an approval of the performance of the Government during the last 18 months.

He said this election gave absolute majority to an alliance since 1989 and it was a vote for stability and continuity.

In his opening remarks thakre said this was a mandate for good governance under the leadership of Vajpayee and that the party had its presence in all parts of the country.

Thakre said after a thorough analysis the party would take corrective steps for strengthening it wherever it is weak.

The meeting which was attended by Home Minister L K Advani, HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, five general secretaries and vice presidents, congratulated Thakre and Vajpayee for leading the party to victory.

Naidu said the party’s winning candidates in the Lok Sabha elections included 25 Scheduled Castes, 21 Scheduled Tribes including one st from general seat, 15 women candidates and one minority. (PTI)
