Superb presentation of play in Dogri
Anna Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: The superb presentation of "Anna Yug" a play in Dogri by the Samooh Theatre won repeated applaud from the audience in the Abhinav Theatre here this evening. This is Dogri adoption of Dharmvir Bhartis Hindi play, Andha Yug, written in 1958 and it has been translated into Dogri by Prof Ram Nath Shastri. It has been ably directed by Mr Sudhir Mahajan, president of the Samooh Theatre, Jammu. There were repeated cheers for the portyral of characters. The theme of the play is the 18th and final day of Mahabhartas battle in which Kauravas and Pandvas are engaged in fierce fight. The artists played their roles so movingly that the audience were emotion-charged throughout the drama. The play depicts the scences from the Mahabharta when the fight between Dharma and righteousness was on one side and the wrong-doing and injustice on the other. But the destruction caused during the war lead to miseries. The reckless use of highly sophisticated weapons has been highlighted as it causes heavy damages and destruction. The role of Ashwathama was played by Dhanesh Dogra, while characters of Dritashtra and Gandhari were finely performed by Sudhir Mahajan and Ms Varsha Dogra. Rajeev Kumars role as Vidur was also praise-worthy. The other artists who took part included: Yasir Nissar Khan, Rakesh Gupta, Lal Chand Dogra, Shreesh, Rajinder Kumar, Suresh Kumar, Satish Kumar, Rajesh Kotru and Vijay Atri who was also associated as make-up man. The music was by Raj Kumar Behrupia, Alka, Suraj Singh, Priyanka, and Suresh Kumar. Earlier, Professor R R Sharma, Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu lit the traditional lamp to inaugurate the stage presentation. Prof Zahoor Ud Din, Head, Department of Urdu and Registrar of Jammu University in his speech praised the artistes for staging the epic show in such a appealing manner and congratulated the Samooh Theatre, Jammu for this presentation. He said our literature is rich and it has relevance in our own times as also for all times to come. He said that the Dogri language has attained maturity and is making rapid strides. The translation work has been done very well by Prof Ram Nath Shastri. A large audience was present and highly appreciated the presentation of the Samooh Theatre. |

Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: The Air Force Station, Jammu celebrated the 67th anniversary of the Indian Air Force with enthusiasm and fervour here, today. The function commenced with ceremonial parade reviewed by Group Captain SK Sharma, Station Commander, who also administered pledge to all personnel of the Air Force Station to rededicate themselves towards preservation of unity and integrity of the country as well as to achieve greater standard of professionalism. Speaking on the occasion, Group Captain SK Sharma exhorted all personnel to acquaint themselves with the latest development and technical advancement in various fields so as to keep peace with the modern times. He asked them to remain alert, agile and vigilant at all times, to maintain high degree of operational preparedness and professional competence. He further said that the administration was fully alive to their general problems for which various measures and constant efforts have been made to solve them. He also, read out the messages received from various dignitaries, such as President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Raksha Mantri. Chief of Air Staff and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Headquarters Western Air Command, on this occasion. Later, the Station Commander also distributed Commendation Cards on behalf of the Chief of the Air Force Staff to the Air Force personnel for their dedication and devotion to duty which included Wing Cdr S Atwal, Sqn Ldr Bharamaraj, Sqn Ldr D Singh and Civ Sri Tilak Raj Lascar. Bua Bhajanji temple celebrations on October 28 Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: Arrangements for the celebration of Prakash Divas of Bua Bhajan ji at a temple in Raipur (Domana) on October 28 were discussed at a meeting held here today. A 19-member parbandak committee has been constituted for ensuring all arrangements for the celebrations at the temple on the day. Forest employees list their demand Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: A joint meeting of Non-Gazetted Forest Officers Association and the Forest Ministerial Staff Association held at Forest Complex here yesterday demanded the immediate payment of 5th Pay Commission arrears. The delaying tactics of the State Government in payment of pending arrears was strongly criticised by both the associations, the release said and added that regularisation of daily wagers was also demanded. Both the associations have declared that if these demands are met by the Government before the Darbar Move, the employees have no alternative but to stage dharna and rallies to get their genuine pending demands conceded. It has also been pointed out that the practice of direct recruitment of class IV must be stopped and no further extensions given to the adhoc appointments. Support was pledged to the employees of Animal Husbandry department who are staging dharna to press for their demands. |

JM launches special drive against milk vendors Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: In order to provide wholesome milk to consumers the Jammu Municipality, Special Squad today inspected 200 milk vendors in Satwari and Bikram Chowk area. The Special Squad comprising officials of Health Section led by Dr Anwar Choudhary checked vehicles bringing milk from Punjab. On the occasion Rs 30,000 was realised as compound fee from 109 vehicles carrying unwholesome milk. It is for the first time that such a huge money was collected as compounding fee by the Jammu Municipality in a single operation. A Municipality handout issued today claimed that since October 1, 200 cases have been registered for compounding fee and over 73 quintals of wholesome milk was destroyed out of which 53 quintals was destroyed this morning alone. It said total 108 quintals of milk was checked during the last eight days. The total compounding fee thus realised is Rs 46,160. Meanwhile, the Administrator Jammu Municipality, has directed the food inspectors to intensify the checking of sweets and khoia products in view of coming festivals of Dushera and Diwali. |
Vaishno Devi Chhari yatra on October 10 Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: The Vaishno Devi Chari yatra will be start on October 10 from Jammu. This yatra in which many pilgrims participate is organised every year by the Shiv Sena to commence from the first Navratra day which has been arranged by Shiv Sena. Mr Yash Gupta, general secretary of Shiv Sena told media persons today that all the arrangements had already been made for this religious function. The permission from the authorities for the procession through main routes in the City of Temples has been obtained. The units in the district and other levels informed. Mr Rakesh Gupta, new Parmukh of Shiv Sena and Mr Kuldeep Gupta, UP Parmukh were present at the press briefing. He, however, informed media persons that one of the office bearer had also announced the yatra programme using the name of Sampark Parmukh Devender Shastriji. So the matter was taken up with the party headquarters in Mumbai and consultations held with Shastriji. He announced that there will be only one Vaishno Devi chhari yatra and " we shall hold discussions with the organisers of the other yatra and evolve an honourable way out". He made it quite clear that in difference to the unity of the party and in a matter of religious nature we feel that there should be one chhari yatra. Mr Gupta stated that the Shiv Sena headquarters is meeting all expenses of this chhari yatra and on one is authorised to collect donations for it. Answering a question, he said that Mr Ashok Gupta is no more office bearer but is very much in the Shiv Sena organisation. He said that the charge has still to be handed over to the new incumbent. |
People pledge to thwart Pak designs Excelsior Correspondent POONCH, Oct 8: People from all walks of life in a meeting here today resolved work for the restoration of peace and normalcy in this border district and frustrate the designs of Pakistan which was trying to sow the seeds of communal hatred in the state. The meeting was chaired by Secretary PCC, Mr Raman Bhalla. While addressing the meeting he stressed on maintenance of communal amity and brotherhood at all costs to defeat the evil designs of the Pakistan. While highlighting the problems of this border district he demanded that people living in Poonch city be treated at par with the people living on LOC. Expressing concern over the dilapidated condition of the Poonch lanes and roads he demanded allotment of more funds for Poonch Municipality. He also demanded posting of doctors and radiologist in district Hospital, appointment of unemployed youth in Police, improvement in public distribution system and increase in RTC bus service to Poonch. |
CRPF organises lecture on AIDS, HIV Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Group Centre, Bantalab organised a lecture on AIDS and HIV here today. The lecture was delivered by a renowned Homoeo-path, Dr G S Soni, who is also serving in CRPF. About one thousand CRPF personnel attended the lecture. While delivering the lecture on the subject, Dr Soni said that first case of AIDS was detected in America during 1981 and since then this disease has spread like wild fire all over the world. Dr Soni further informed that first such case in our country was detected in Chennai in the year 1986. He disclosed that about 23 million full blown AIDS cases were detected in between 1986 and 1992 and 90% of them were found in developed countries. He further added that Government of India has made special provision in the budget for controlling this disease and the Government has also provided HIV Testing facilities in each district Headquater. He also threw light on various aspects relating to AIDS. He cleared various doubts about the AIDS and answered questions of the jawans. The Deputy Commandant, Miss Rakhi Sahai while introducing the guest, Dr Soni to CRPF personel, said that the aim of organising this lecture is to make the jawans aware about the dangers of this killer disease, AIDS and also to make them more human and sympathetic towards HIV positive carriers. |

Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: Animal Treatment-cum-Awareness Camp was organised by a social organisation "People for Animals, Jammu chapter" in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Jammu at Peerkhou here today. The District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Mr P K Tripathi was the chief guest and the Administrator, Jammu Municipality, Mr K B Jandial presided. The camp was inaugurated by the Ex-Director, Animal Husbandry Department, Dr Kulwant Singh. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Tripathi lauded the role of the organisation for organising the camp to create the awareness among the masses about our responsibility towards animals. He said the animals are the part and partial of the humanlife. He said that 80% population of the country is living in villages and their livelihood wholy dependents on animals. He said that animals are playing a vital role in the agriculture sector besides to boost the economical standard of the people. He said we have to take proper care and show sympathies towards the God gifted creatures of the universes. The Administrator, Jammu Municipality on the occasion, appealed the people not to be crual towards animals and give them friendly treatment and take proper care of these. Referring to the major problems being faced by the Jammu Municipality due to polythene bags and stray animals in the city, Mr Jandial said that the people offenly let off their animals after getting milk causing traffic hazard and insanitation in the city. It has also been observed that the animals are consuming polythene bags which is most dangerous for animals especially for milch cows. He said that the Jammu Municipality has launched a vigrous campaign to create awareness among the masses about the harmful affects on the human life by using polythene bags especially coloured and recycled. Mr Jandial appealed the people to cooperate the administration in curbing this menace from the society. He also requested the print and electronic media to help Jammu Municipality in education the masses about this problem. He also appealed the NGOs to comeforward and organise such camps for this nobal cause. Dr Kulwant Singh educated the masses about various diseases to the animals and said that the people should contact the qualified veterinary doctors and get their animals treated from them. He stressed the need for proper care and immunisation of their animals from time to time. The patorn of the People for Animals, Jammu chapter and former Director General of Information, Mr S P Sahani while presenting the vote of thanks appealed the people to comforward and help the organisation in this noble job. A large number of horses were vaccinated against tetnus disease at the camp. |
PPEU assails Govt for anti-employees policies Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8: Provincial Power Employees Union (PPEU) in a meeting held here today under the presidentship of Mr Shakti Gupta, provincial president assailed the State Government for its anti-employees policies by withdrawing the facility of the appointment to the Government job to the kith and kin of the employee who expires while performing the official duty. In a statement here, Mr Shakti Gupta appealed to the State Government to restore the SRO-43 in its original form. He threatened that the PPEU employees will otherwise resort to the extreme steps. It was also urged the Government to withdraw the orders under which provision for special pay has been scrapped. The release said that during the meeting, the daily workers complained that they have not received their wages for the last two months despite the fact that the Chief Secretary during the meeting with PPEU leadership had accepted the demand and also released the money for the same. It was threatened that in case the wages of the daily wagers were not released, they shall be proceeding on strike , the responsibility of which will wholly be on the Government. The meeting also expressed resentment against those self styled leaders who were engaged in the disinformation campaign against Mr Shakti Gupta. It was clarified that the Government is not withdrawing the facility of two and a half days extra pay to the employees of PDD and in such case, then the agitation will be launched. Mr D P Warikoo, general secretary during the meeting appealed to the Government to restore the SRO-43, special pay and release the wages of second quarter in PDD to the daily rated workers and issuance of the regularisation orders. |
Habitat Week observed in Govt Parade College Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 8As a part of " Habitat Week celebrations, the Habitat day was observed in the Woman College Parade Ground Jammu today. The function was presided over by Prof Chanchal Pandoh, Principal of the college while Dr B L Koul, Principal of Commerce College Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion. Prof H P Singh, NSS Programme officer of the college welcomed the chief guest, faculty members and other guests. Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest highlighted the importance of Habitat and sustainable conservation and protection of forests and wildlife habitat. He asked the young students to come forward and to join the hands in world wide efforts to promote greater awareness of endangered species for the benefit of future generations. The students of the college also spoke on various aspects of environmental and wildlife protection. They also presented a colourful cultural programme on the occasion. Prof Chanchal in her address impressed upon the students to create awareness among the masses about importance of habitat and protection of forests. She also referred to the relationship between the wildlife, forests and the rainfall. The programme was conducted by Ms Charanjit Kaur of BSc Part-III and was organised jointly by the N S S unit, World Wild Fund and the Society for popularization of Science. Dawn to dusk curfew at Poonch border Excelsior Correspondent Poonch, Oct 8 : In exercise of power vested in him under Section 144 Cr P C, that District Magistrate, Poonch, Mr G Q Mughal has issued orders that the period of curfew imposed in 5 kms area of border belt of tehsil Surankote as a whole and two panchayat halqas of tehsil Haveli such as Seri Khawaja and Sheendara has been extended for further period of two months beyond October 5, 1999 between 7 p m to 6 a m. The District Magistrate has further imposed night curfew between 7 pm to 6 am in the areas falling within the territorial limits of Niabat Loran, Mandi and Chandak of tehsil Haveli, district Poonch except the township of Mandi and Loran bazar. This order will remain enforce for a period of two months from October 5, 1999. |
