JAMMU, Oct 3: An ex-servicemen's rally of the Dogra Regiment was held at Zorawar Stadium, Sanjuwan near Jammu, today. Lt General SS Sangra, PVSM, VSM, GOC-in-C Central Command, who is also Colonel of the Dogra Regiment and Dogra Scouts, was the chief guest.

While addressing at the raly, General Sangra lauded the sacrifices made by the Army and the ex-servicemen for the country. Paying homage to Kargil martyrs, the General said that our armed forces had accomplished the task and ensure that no one would ever dare to indulge in this kind of misadventure infuture. The General also stressed that ex-servicemen must help each other and stand on their own feet rather than expecting others to do it for them. General Sangra disclosed that three coaching centres are being established at Jammu, Jalandhar and Ludhiana where wards of serving soldiers and ex-servicemen will be provided training for recruitment in Army as well as in civil jobs.

The General also announced the establishment of Dogra Sampark Kendra at Sanjuwan which would benefit the Dogra ex-servicemen for finalisation of pension cases, post retirement benefits, allotment of discard vehicles and settlement of cases for war widows as well as widows of the Dogra Regiment. He also added that Boys Hostel for orphans will also be established where all facilities will be provided free of cost.

Earlier, Major General Bhopinder Singh, General Officer Commanding Tiger Division, welcomed the chief guest to the rally which was aimed to instill a feeling among the ex-servicemen that those in service have not forgotten them. This also provided an opportunity to them to interact with the record office to resolve outstanding settlements of pay and pension besides, other problems.

A recruitment rally was also held on the occasion by recruiting team from the Dogra Regimental Centre.

Later, Lt General as Sangra, inaugurated an eye camp established by the medical team of Government Medical College, Jammu for the benefit of ex-servicemen and their wards and also visited the site of the proposed Dogra Boys Hostel at Sunjwan.

BJP MLA condemns killings by militants

JAMMU, Oct 3: Bharatiya Janata Party, (BJP) MLA from Ramban Mr Bali Bhagat has strongly condemned the killing of two members of a family by militants in New Plots today.

In a statement he said this inhuman and barbaric act has shocked the peace loving people of the Jammu. Mr Bhagat who also visited the family soon after the incident today demanded immediate arrest of the militants responsible for this savagy and inhuman act.

32 pc voting in Pattan segment repolling

SRINAGAR, Oct 3: About 32 percent electorates have practised their franchise in the repolling at six polling stations in Pattan Assembly segment of Baramulla Parliamentary constituency today.

Out of 5922 electorates in the six polling stations, as many as 1900 persons exercised their franchise.

The meeting demanded release of two DA instalments from January and July 1999 and 5th Pay Commission arrear, immediate issue of SRO for removal of anomalies in favour of teaching community and initial higher start to graduate and post graduate teachers and selection grade to all the under graduates teachers who have completed their ten years of service in the department and earned leave to the teaching community.

Mahajan Sabha honours outstanding personalities

JAMMU, Oct 3: Jammu Central Mahajan Sabha today felicitated 45 persons belong to its community for their some outstanding achievement in different walks of life. They were presented mementos at a special function organised in connection with the 133th birth anniversary of great social reformer Lala Hans Raj Mahajan.

Mr K K Gupta, former Judge of High Court, who was the chief guest at the function, called for concerted efforts to root out social evils prevalent in the society. He also suggested that there should be better co-operation and co-ordination between various sabhas of other communities for effective result of social reforms.

He congratulated the young girls and boys as also men from different fields for making their outstanding contributions to the community as well as the whole society.

Mr Yash Paul Gupta, President, Mahajan Sabha, in his speech said that the community if forging ahead and the sabha will certainly give consideration to suggestion put forth by Mr Justice K K Gupta for interaction with other sabhas.

Mr Om Parkash Goel, sr vice president, Jugal Mahajan, Rattan Lal Gupta, Dr K L Gupta, Inderjeet Gupta, O P Gupta, Amar Nath Gupta, Prof J K Gupta, general secretary, Prof T C Langar also addressed the jam-packed Mahajan Bhavan Hall and spoke about the great social reformer Lala Hans Raj Mahajan whose birth anniversary was celebrated in series of programmes.

A total of 19 students who obtained positions in the academic sphere from post-graduate to the matriculation level were given mememtos at the function. Ritu Gupta got first position in M A (History), Anuradha Gupta got third slot in M Sc (Environment)Deepali Mahajan got first in Bsc, Veenu Gupta secured first position in BA while Sakshi Gupta topped in matriculation and Shivani Mahajan and Neha Gupta were at third and 4th positions in matriculation. It was stated that out of first 35 positions as many as 18 belong to students of Mahajan community.

Awards were given to the students who participated in the painting competitions and symposium held some days back. In the painting contest Shivang Gupta, Siddarth Gupta, Nakul Gupta topped in Group I, in Group II Deepsha Gupta, Geetika Gupta and TwinklleGupta and in the Group III Vikul Gupta, Raghav Gupta and Payal Gupta were adjudged winner and given mememtos.

In the symposium Gaurav Gupta, Kanika Gupta and Kunal Gupta bagged first, second and third positions respectively and five students were given consolation prizes.

Various papers presented in rural surgeons meet

UDHAMPUR, Oct 3: On the second day of 7th National conference of Rural Surgery here, a number of scientific papers were presented by the eminent doctors from various parts of the country and abroad.

As per a release in the morning session, the papers presented covered various aspects of rural surgery and obstetrics practice at grass root level.

A symposium on acute pancreatitis was also held in which eminent surgeons from AIIMS, New Delhi, Command Hospital Udhampur and Government Medical College Jammu shared their experiences on various aspects of the disease. Other interesting topics included surgery and diabetes mellitus, anxious moments in lap chole revascularisation of acute limb and so on.

Dr T K Jena from IGNOU, New Delhi gave details of certificate course in rural surgery and enrolled the surgeons who could impart training in rural areas. Dr K C Sharma suggested that the District Hospitals like Udhampur which have good infrastructure and all the surgical specialities should be recognised for such trainings to reduce load on medical colleges.

The hectic schedule of the day session was followed by a colourful evening at Army Public School auditorium where a cultural programme was organised.

Dr Rattana Malhotra from KEM Hospital Mumbai who performed heart surgery on a patient at District Hospital Udhampur, visited the hospital and expressed her entire satisfaction on the post operative progress of the patient and advised the hospital authorities to shift the patient to general ward. Dr Malhotra complimented the hospital authorities for excellent maintenance of the hospital

JU calls agitating students for talks
Result toppled due to computer error

JAMMU, Oct 3: Due to the computer fault, the result of BA/BSc/BCom was toppled and nearly 21 students of Degree College, Udhampur were the sufferers , as it was a shock to them to find their name in the list of failures . Now, these students have launched an agitation and colleges in the town have been shut down from the last seven days.

However, double the number of those failed have been passed by the University by rectifying the mistake and also they have got admission in the next class.

Mr Yasar Mohammed received an amended notification in the first week of September, failing him in two subjects. He was earlier declared pass and even had started attending classes in the next class. On the same time, his three other class mates, who managed their admission with re-appear in one subject. But, as per the amended notification, they were declared failed in two subjects respectively, resulting into cancellation their admissions.

One of the college teacher on the condition of anonymity said, "no doubt the University statute have the provision of such amendments within the six months of declaration of results, but it humiliated the students, who had started attending classes".

These students include Rahul Saraf, Ezaz Ahmed and Gian Chand.

On the same time, the University after re-checking the computerized result, passed seven other students, who were failing in one or two subjects in the same college. They are Pardeep Singh, Bachan Lal, Sanjeev Kumar, Abhishekh, Vishant Baru, Sanjeev Singh Katoch and Deepak Sharma.

When contacted, a technical person in the examination section said that the error was committed due to oversight when result was being finalised by the concerned agency.

When contacted Principal, Prof Surinder Saproo on telephone said that he has called the students time and again for talks, but they did not turn-up. "Mistake has been committed by someone, somewhere and guilty person should be identified. The University should ensure that such things should not happen again", the Principal said.

He further said that injustice has been done to the students, but strike was not a solution to any problem. They should approach the University and try to find out solution to the loss caused to them, he added.

When asked when college had received the amended notification, Prof Saproo said, " I received the notification only in the middle of September, but I came to know about the amendment when some students approached me for reimbursement of their admission fee".

Meanwhile, according to Jammu University spokesman, Dr Pritam Singh the University has offered the students for talks. The administration has asked the students to came and talk about their genuine problems as their is no fun of agitations and closing of colleges.

It may be recalled that students of Degree Colleges in Udhampur have launched agitations, disturbing classes from the last seven days. They even go to the extent that had blocked the National Highway for three hours disrupting traffic on the busy Jammu-Srinagar road.

War widow honoured

RAJOURI, Oct. 3: Many brave soldiers of the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch, have laid down their lives, defending the country's frontiers and integrity in the protractd struggle against the nefarious designs of the Pak ISI and Army.

Undeterred in his zeal to give a befitting reply to the machinations of this hostile neighbour, with utter disregard to his personal safety, Rifleman Joginder Singh as one such brave son of J&K in uniform who in the best traditions of the Indian Army and his "paltan.'' 14th Battalion the Sikh Regiment, had laid down his life on the desolate heights of the Kargil Sector on 25th July 99.

Home is the hunter home from the hill, his mortal remains forever mingled with the sacred soil and waters of the State, his valour immortalised in the folklore of his remote vilage but legendary District whose multi lingual and multi religious inhabitants had thrown out the marauding Pakistani tribals during the dawn of independent India.

The J&K Government has always helped soldiers of Indian Army. They have announced a relief of Rs. five lakh for all martyrs. Mr B A Runyal, D C Rajouri has been prompt in giving immediate relief of Rs. 2 lakh to all the family of martyrs of Rajouri District.

In the instant case a cheque of Rs. 2 lakh was handed over to the Army authorities for presentation to the Charan Kaur. The Deputy Commissioner Rajouri has assured early release of balance 3 lakh to all the family of martyrs of Rajouri Districts.

Mrs Ira Yadav, President AWWA Rajouri chapter, presented the ibid cheque to Mr Charan Kaur, widow of Rifleman Joginder Singh as immediate ex-gratia payment from the State Govt.

Reaching out to their brave sister and families bereft of their breadwinners, Mrs Ira Yadav assured Charan Kaur that AWWA would always be at her side during this time of need.

Transport Companies Association demands
action against anti-social elements

JAMMU, Oct 3: J&K Motor Transport Companies Association while reiterating full confidence in the presidentship of Choudhary Darshan Singh who was duly elected for a full term of one year upto February 2000, has urged upon the administration to take strict action against those elements who have taken law into their hands by disturbing the smooth functioning of the day today activities of the Association.

In a press release, Association said that these elements were trying to provoke and mislead the transport operators for their vested interest and were trying to involve the anti-social elements for disturbing smooth flow of vehicles involved in carrying essential civil and army supplies to the various part of the State.

The majority of the Association members in their earlier meeting has expressed their full support to Choudhary Darshan Singh and had strongly condemned illegal and uncalled for section of transport operator who have been disturbing working of the transport industry.

The Association also called upon the transporters to maintain unity among its rank and file and to be aware of these elements who are out to break their unity for their vested selfish interests.

Association made it clear that Choudhary Darshan Singh is the duly elected president of the Association for the tenure of one year.

Rifferman cremated with full military honours

JAMMU, Oct 3: The body of martyr Rifleman Jasbir Singh of 22 Rashtriya Rifles (18 Punjab Regiment), who made the supreme sacrifice in Machil Sector in Kupwara district, was cremated at his native village Simbal Camp with full military honours, today.

A resident of Simbal Camp of RS Pura tehsil, Rifleman Jasbir Singh laid down his life while fighting foreign militants near Line of Control in Machil Sector in Kupwara district on 30 Sept 99. Rifleman Jasbir Singh had left behind his mother, father, one brother and one sister.

"I am proud to be the father of a valiant soldier who laid down his life for the motherland", says his father Hardeep Singh.

A befitting farewell was given to this brave soldier. Buglers sounded the last post. Wreaths were also laid on behalf of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, General Officer Commanding of Nagrota Corps and Genral officer Commanding Tiger Infantry Division. Commanding Officer, 22 RR was also present during the cremation ceremony.

Bargotra warns Amanullah Khan

JAMMU, Oct 3: President Pradesh Janata Dal Secular (JDS), Mr Dhan Raj Bargotra has warned the chairman JKLF against his organisation’s move to cross LOC in Poonch Sector tomorrow.

Mr Bargotra who was addressing Party workers meetings in twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch said such a move will not solve any problem but give rise to blood shed. He warned the JKLF leader that Indian Army will not watch as mute spectators but push back the marchers with full might.

Mr Bargotra also demanded that militancy should be crushed with iron hands in the border districts. He also expressed serious concern over the rising corruption in the border districts saying that youth lot of unrest is brewing among the youth in these districts due to increasing unemployment.

The JD leader who was on the intensive tour of border districts addressed public meetings at Sunderbani, Nowshera, Rajouri, Mendhar, Krishna Ghati, Surankote and Poonch.

He was also accompanied by Messrs Ram Rattan, Krishan Lal Sharma and Vinod Sharma during his visit.

Manhas to head Kashtriya Rajput Sudhar Sabha

JAMMU, Oct 3: All J&K Kashtriya Rajput Sudhar Sabha in a meeting held at village Patta Barn today constituted its Executive Body.

As per a release, the meeting was held under the presidentship of Sub (retd) Shiv Singh Jamwal in which Mr Shamsher Singh Manhas of village Akhalpur was unanimously elected as president of the Sabha.

Besides him Messrs Avtar Singh Manhas (retd) Headmaster of village Dab Karm Din was elected as general secretary while Sub. Balwant Singh Baran of village Patta Baran was elected as vice president. Jaswant Singh Jamwal of village Kahna Chak was elected as secretary while Parbhat Singh Jamwal of Top Sher Khania was elected as chief organisor. Ashok Singh Manhas of village Paloura was elected as organisor and Balwan Singh Jamwal of village Kahna Chak was elected as cashier.

In addition to it 13 members Working Committee was also elected on the occasion. Its members include Messrs Ashok Singh, Kuldip Singh, Ashok Singh Bhalwal, Balwan Singh, Balbir Singh, Surinder Singh, Sub. Diploma engineers warn state wide agitation

JAMMU, Oct 3: Diploma Engineers Association in a meeting here today held under the chairmanship of its president Mr R S Jasrotia has warned the state wide agitation in protest against what it alleged the callous and indifferent attitude of the authorities towards the diploma engineers cadre.

As per a release, the meeting also discussed the strategy to be adopted during the agitation. It alleged that the majority of diploma engineers has been denied even the single promotion in their entire career span and this has no simily in the contemporary Indian services.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Jasrotia urged the authorities to explain the reason for delay in modulation of the promotion policy as assured by them several times.

He called upon entire rank and file of the diploma engineers community to remain vigilant and prepare for the proposed agitation.

He wondered as to why the Coordination Committee which was constituted on the instructions of this Association by the Chief Secretary to look into the anomalies of stagnation has failed to submit its report till date.

Mr R K Kohli demanded immediate withdrawal of SRO 55 while the Association general secretary, Mr Jugal Kishore urged the authorities to withdraw the Circular No 518 imposing restrictions on the In Situ promotions immediately.

Mr V K Trikha, chairman Advisory Committee stressed upon the authorities to upgrade all those junior engineers working in grade second to the Junior Engineers Grade Ist who have put over 10 years service in accordance with the standing rules.
