Grand Slam Cup MUNICH (GERMANY), Oct 2: World number one Martina Hingis was beaten 6-2 6-7 9-7 by Venus Williams in a thrilling Grand Slam Cup semifinal yesterday. The defending champion won the first set unexpectedly easily but then fought off a valiant comeback by the Swiss. "It was a great match," said Williams after avenging her defeat by Hingis in the U.S. Open semifinals three weeks ago. "It was back and forth the whole way. We both fought hard. I didnt want to lose. I wanted to come out the victor for once." The 2-1/2 hours clash in Munichs olympic was easily the best of the tournament. World number three Williams will play Lindsay Davenport or sister Serena Williams for the 800,000 first prize in Sundays final. In the mens quarter-finals, Briton Greg Rusedski defeated second seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia 7-5 7-6 and Ukrainian Andrei Medvedev eliminated Dutchman Richard Krajicek 7-6 6-4. Williams blasted 18 aces in a ferocious display of power tennis but she also double-faulted 12 times. Many of the Americans returns seemed to be faster than her opponents serves. "It was almost embarrassing at the beginning," said Hingis. It was like, whats going on? this cant be happening. "I was surprised by the way she was serving," added Hingis, who had beaten Williams in eight of their 11 previous meetings. "From what I remember, her serves usually fall apart. I even had some problems on her second serve today." Williams cut hingis to pieces in the first set, which lasted a mere 26 minutes. She broke Hingis three times and fired blazing serves past the flat-footed Australian open winner at speeds above 185 kph. Hingis did not manage one ace. Williams threatened to turn the match into a rout, going ahead 4-1 in the second set before Hingis began her comeback and forced a tiebreak. Hingis led 4-2 before Williams surged ahead and reached match point at 6-5. But Hingis took the next three points to claim the tiebreak 8-6. "I thought I was going to close it out," said Williams, trying to explain the second-set slump that let Hingis back into the match. "It just didnt turn out that way." In the decisive set, Hingis led 4-1 before Williams levelled at 6-6. Williams took the decisive break in the 15th game and served out for the match. "I had my chances in the third set and didnt cash in," said Hingis, who still earned 300,000. Williams said Hingis still deserved to be number one, but that she, her sister and Davenport were all closing in on the pinnacle. "I myself would love to be number one," said Williams. "I know Serena wants to be number one. Most likely Lindsay wants to be number one. Were all trying our best. Right now she (Hingis) is at the top and deserves to be there. One day Ill deserve that spot, too." (REUTERS) |
Im fit to play against New Zealand: Azhar MUMBAI, Oct 2: Former Indian cricket captain Mohd Azharuddin is back to full fitness after a shoulder surgery and has said he would intimate the board in time to be considered for selection for the first test against New Zealand starting at Mohali on October 10. I think I have recovered completely and I should be fit to play in the test matches against New Zealand. I will be producing my fitness certificate in a couple of days, he told mid-day.Com in an interview. Azhar said he had no problem playing under Sachin Tendulkars captaincy or interacting with new coach Kapil Dev. I am not worried about criticism as people are there to criticise, he said when asked whether Kapil Devs remarks some time back that Azhar should call it a day rankled. The game looks very easy from outside and there is bound to be criticism from outside. One has to take these things in the stride and carry on. I dont see any problem with Kapil taking over as coach, he said. Azhar said problems between him and Tendulkar was a media creation. I think this is just not fair and is not good for the game, he said. Ive played under Sachin and he has played under me and we have had no problems. A lot of things are written that create doubts in the minds of players and public, he said. (PTI) |
