Agassi enjoys life with Graf but says no wedding plans

MUNICH, GERMANY, Oct 1: "Love thirty" has taken on a new meaning for Andre Agassi since the American tennis champion revealed his romance with Steffi Graf — who turned 30 in June.

Agassi said yesterday he had no plans to start learning German and declined to reveal when his relationship with the recently retired German tennis star began.

"I’ve just enjoyed my time with her," Agassi, 29, said in his first extensive comments on the relationship at a news conference following his first-round defeat by Tommy Haas at the Grand Slam Cup.

"It’s not any different than anybody you enjoy spending time with," he added.

Agassi said he would not follow Graf into retirement. The German quit a month after turning 30. Agassi, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, will hit 30 on April 29.

"I don’t even think about that," he said of retirement. "That’s hopefully a long way away."

Graf and Agassi have known each other on the international tennis circuit for more than a decade and they both celebrated comeback triumphs at the French Open in June — three months before announcing they had fallen in love with each other.

German newspapers have since been filled with wildly speculative reports that Agassi and Graf are planning to marry — perhaps as soon as January 1 2000 — and are contemplating having children.

"I have no plans, no," Agassi said when asked about the reports.

Agassi, whose two-year old marriage to actress Brooke Shields ended in divorce earlier this year, was his usual loquacious self when talking about his tennis game but confined himself to brief and rather evasive replies when asked about Graf.

He declined to say why Graf, who accompanied him on a flight from the United States to Munich on Tuesday before going on to to Vienna and then her home town of Heidelberg, did not appear at the Grand Slam Cup for his match yesterday.

"Not really, no," Agassi said when asked if he wanted to explain her absence. Asked if Graf planned to come to Munich, Agassi said: "No, I mean, that’s her business, what she’s doing."

Graf has avoided the German media since her father was convicted for tax evasion and sent to jail. She recently split up with her boyfriend of seven years Michael Bartels.

When asked on Thursday why he and Graf had got together after knowing each other for so long, Agassi said: "I don’t know if I can explain it."

Agassi had said after winning the French Open in June that he had been inspired by Graf. Asked yesterday how she had inspired him, the American said: "That’s for me to know and you to figure out." (REUTERS)

Ganguly-led India down Zimbabwe to meet S Africa in final

NAIROBI, Oct 1: Saurav Ganguly struck a splendid century as India whipped Zimbabwe by 107 runs today to set the stage for their second successive one-day title by sealing a potentially explosive final clash against South Africa in the LG Cup Quadrangular Cricket Tournament.

India, led by Ganguly’s eighth one-day hundred, a racy 139 off just 147 balls, piled up 277 for six wickets after being inducted under overcast conditions and then bundled out Zimbabwe for 170 to storm into the summit clash with an all-win record at the Nairobi Gymkhana.

Set to reach 278 in only 42 overs to score their second win as well as upstage the Proteas on net run rate, Zimbabwe were overwhelmed by the Indian off-spin attack of Nikhil Chopra (4/33) and impressive newcomer Vijay Bharadwaj (3/34).

India, who have put aside the absence of master batsman and regular skipper Sachin Tendulkar to carve out their third straight league win, will take on the World Cup semifinalists in the final to be held on Sunday.

Stylist left-hander Saurav Ganguly, adjudged man of the match, struck his eighth one-day hundred studded with five sixes, and put on 70-runs with fellow opener S Ramesh (31) and 107-runs for the second wicket with veteran Robin Singh (41) that effectively put the match beyond Zimbabwe.

Openers Neil Johnson (52) and Grant Flower (38) gave a decent start as the Africans made a game bid to make a match of it, but the initial asking rate of 6.61 runs per over kept growing before the spinners struck telling blows.

It definitely is a morale booster, but Sunday can be another day and we have to keep the good work going, said a pleased but cautious skipper Ajay Jadeja after the match.

Jadeja, standing in for the injury-hit Tendulkar, continued with the good job done by Ganguly who led the side to the series victory over the West Indies in the three-match affair in Toronto last month.

Setting out to overhaul the Indian score, boosted by a late cameo of 25 off just 13 deliveries by Sunil Joshi, Johnson and Grant Flower went after gangling seamer Debasish Mohanty, Milking 11 runs off his first over and he was taken off the attack after conceding 26 runs in four overs.

Mohanty’s bad day continued as he dropped a sitter off Flower at mid on in Chopra’s first over, but the batsman who was then on 33, was dismissed by paceman Venkatesh Prasad soon after.

Skipper Alistair Campbell was run out by a Chopra throw for two to complete a wretched tournament and Stuart Carlisle (21 off 25 balls) fell to Mohanty and Chopra then sent back Murray Goodwin (11) and the usually consistent Andy Flower off successive balls to be on a hattrick.

Left-hander Johnson, whose 52 came off 67 balls with six fours, averted the hattrick, but running out of partners went for a desperate slog off Chopra to be caught at the long off boundary by Joshi.

The rest of the wickets tumbled at regular intervals and the 24-year-old Bharadwaj, playing in only his third match, took three wickets off successive overs and Chopra picked his fourth to complete the victory.(PTI)

May be one or two match were fixed: Imran

LONDON, Oct 1: Former Pakistan cricket captain Imran Khan has admitted that ‘fixing’ could have taken place in matches involving Pakistan.

He said some fixing had taken place in probably one or two matches four or five years ago and Pakistan Cricket Board should have held an inquiry and banned those involved.

Now we have reached a stage, whenever the team loses, people think, they (cricketers) have taken money, he said in a BBC programme with clive anderson, all talk — celebrity chatter, telecast last night.

Answering a specific question on a ‘suggestion’ of match fixing levelled against Pakistan cricketers, Imran said my feeling is that four five years back, there was some. You know, probably one or two matches, some fixing took place.

What the Cricket Board in Pakistan should have done was they should have just held an inquiry, banned the players involved and the issue would have perished as they have done in australia where a couple of players were involved in dealing with the bookies, the board did an inquiry and (that was) end of the problem, Imran said.

He did not specify which matches were fixed. (PTI)
