BCCI considers all-India venue rotation system NEW DELHI, Nov 27: The Cricket Board is considering doing away with zonal rotation system for selecting venues for the international matches by introducing an all-India rotation system to give fair chance to all the state associations. We discussed the zonal rotation system of picking the venues which invariably ends up giving greater preference to some select venues while other stadia get matches after three to five years, Board Secretary Jaywant Lele told PTI here. Lele, who was here to attend the programmes and fixtures committee meeting to decide the itinerary of South Africas tour of India, said the members felt instead of zonal rotation system, it should be all-India rotation system. The programmes and fixtures committee today finalised the dates and venues for proteas one-and-a-half-month tour starting february end which will be tabled at the BCCI working committee meeting in Chennai on December 18 for ratification. The South Africans will play two tests and five one-day international matches against the hosts. The likely test venues by rotation are Mumbai and Bangalore while four of the five one-dayers are expected to be played at Kanpur, Jamshedpur, Baroda and Faridabad - all by zonal rotation. The fifth tie is likely to be played at Kochi after Goa Cricket Association expressed its inability to host a tie, Board sources said. Among the other issues finalised were hosting of challenger trophy by Ahmedabad from February 10 to 13 and shifting of the all-India under-19 tournament from Cuttack to Chennai due to the super-cyclone in Orissa. Aussies take stranglehold on test PERTH, Nov 27: A career-best 197 by Ricky Ponting and a fighting 144 by Justin Langer set Australia up for a clean sweep of Pakistan on day two of the third cricket test today. Relishing the best of the batting conditions on the second day Langer and Ponting ground out the Pakistan bowling in a record fifth-wicket partnership of 327 in Australias 451. Pakistan, rolled for 155 in the first innings, had slumped to 40 for two in its second at stumps, needing 257 runs to avoid an innings defeat. The visitors, still not fully recovered from the unexpected loss in the second test in Hobart, were made to look ordinary by Langer and Ponting, who joined forces with Australia at 54 for four. Ponting, who had ducks in his past three innings, attacked boldly and he outscored and overshowed another invaluable innings by no.3 left-hander Langer, who followed up his match-winning 127 in Hobart with an innings that lasted 17 minutes over seven hours. The pair resurrected the Australian innings with a national record stand for any wicket against Pakistan. The stand surpassed the 279 shared between Mark Taylor and Langer in Peshawar in 1998-99. Australia collapsed soon after the mammoth stand ended at 381, losing the last six wickets for 27 runs in 11 overs. After Glenn Mcgrath, Damien Fleming and Michael Kasprowicz had taken just 52 overs to rout Pakistan on the first day, Langer and Ponting faced almost a 100 between them. Resuming the day on 171 for four, Langer and Ponting went scored a run-a-minute to take Australia to 291 for four at lunch and consolidated soon after with just 75 runs in 28 overs between lunch and tea. Pontings chanceless innings came to an end two balls after Langers fall. The right-hander drove loosely at an Azhar Mahmood outswinger and was caught at point by Ijaz Ahmed. Ponting faced 288 balls for his fifth test century and lasted seven hours. Fast medium bowler Mohammad Akram, who shot through the Australian top order with three wickets, finished with a career-best 5-135 in his seventh test. Mohammad was also reported by umpire Darrell Hair after he elbowed batsman Shane Warne as he crossed for a single. He will face the match umpire within 36 hours. Skipper Wasim Akram managed to bowl just 10 overs and was forced to rest a sore left groin. It was nothing serious, just a precautionary measure, said Dale Naylor, the team physiotherapist. (AP) |

Cup Football DUBAI, Nov 27: Undeterred by the failure to press home their advantage in the first two matches against hosts UAE and the highly rated Uzbekistan, India will seek to open their account when they meet Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup football group-3 qualifiers tonight. Both India and Sri Lanka are winless in the qualifiers, though Indias last match against Uzbekistan did make soccer lovers sit up and take note as the gutsy boys from the subcontinent taught the Uzbeks a few football lessons. The Indians looked set for victory with a 2-1 lead but succumbed under pressure to concede two late goals. Against hosts United Arab Emirates too they failed to capitalise on a one-goal half-time lead and went down 1-3. Coach Sukhwinder Singh blamed lack of international exposure, rather than potential, for the losses. We played like champions against Uzbekistan, he said. But what we lack is international match exposure. However, we will be going all out against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the last two games he told reporters on match eve. In the other match of the day, fancied hosts UAE meet Uzbekistan, both having nine points each. A win would see the Uzbeks through to the tournament proper, but a draw would give uae a chance provided they beat Sri Lanka by a huge margin on Monday. India is going into tonights match without three key players, injured goalkeeper Virender Singh and defender K V Dhanesh and medio Jules Alberto, both out after being shown the yellow card twice. Sri Lankan coach M Karuthu said the failure of his strikers to convert chances had hit their chances. We got our chances but we did not score goals, he said. The Lanakns will also be without their goalkeeper, who is recovering from flu and dehydration. There is no news at all on the replacement we had asked for the goalkeeper. Besides, our sweeper has fractured his finger and cannot play, he said. Uzbek coach Mahmoud Rahimov admitted that his team nearly lost the game against India. The Indians have shown us a different aspect of the game as it is played in the subcontinent. Our players had to work very hard, he said. The Uzbek coach blamed the organisers and the Asian Football Federation (AFF) for the teams draw which did not allow them any rest while enabling UAE and India to relax. Rahimov was asked if the Uzbeks played without their star players against India on Thursday expecting an easy win. In fact, after he found the going tough, trailing 2-1 in the 54th minute, Rahimov was forced to bring in both strikers Jafar Irismetov and Maksim Shatskikh, which turned the game in their favour in the second half. Home coach Srecko Juricic was upbeat. See what happened to the Uzbeks against India. They were closer to losing the game than us. We let in only one goal against India and Uzbekistan conceded two, he remarked. (PTI) |
