Injuries hit Pakistan before third test

PERTH, Nov 25: Pakistan’s preparations for the third test against Australia were thrown into confusion today by injuries to two key players.

Opening batsman Mohammad Wasim, 22, has a broken finger and will almost certainly be sidelined for the match, which gets underway here tomorrow.

Shock fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, 24, is suffering from a groin strain.

Wasim broke the finger - on his left hand - while fielding in the slips in the second test which ended in Hobart on Monday.

Akhtar complained of groin soreness at training today and was given a light workout at the Waca ground nets.

While Wasim has virtually no chance of being able to take the field tomorrow, Pakistan captain Wasim Akram said Akhtar had good prospects of being able to play.

I believe he will be fit for the game, but a decision will not be made until the morning, he said.

I think at his age a bowler goes through a few niggles, and I believe when you are playing for your country, you have to go through with a few pains and aches, but hopefully he will be okay in the morning.

Wasim’s absence will be a big blow for the tourists. He has been one of Pakistan’s leading scorers in the first two tests, with a 50 in Brisbane and 91 and 20 in Hobart.

Two players challenging for the right to open with Saeed Anwar are Wajahutullah Wasti and Ghulam Ali.

Wajahutullah might get a game tomorrow, Akram said.

He said although the series had been lost 0-2 already, there was still a lot of pride to play for.

The boys are geared up again and they want to win, he said. We gave them a good fight in the last test and we lasted five days.

We are very excited, but hope our bowlers will not get overawed with the bouncy pitch.

Akram said Pakistan cricket officials were looking at ways of improving the side’s fielding and catching, which have been well below Australia’s standard in this series.

We are looking into it, and are hoping for some improvement, he said. We hope our fielding will be a lot better as early as the one-day series, (against Australia and India, starting January 9).

The Pakistan side will not be finalised until shortly before the game.

Australian captain Steve Waugh said 27-year-old queenslander Michael Kasprowicz had been included in the Australian eleven, leaving express bowler Brett Lee as 12th man.

Lee, 23, considered Australia’s fastest bowler, is yet to play in a senior international, but Waugh said he expected him to get his first test in the near (AFP)

India dismiss alleged defeatist talk

BRISBANE, Nov 25: India dismissed talk of losing all their tests against Australia and turned their minds on today to preparing for the first test next month.

The touring party, who begin their opening tour match against Queensland tomorrow, accepted the denial of Board for Control of Cricket in India secretary Jaywant Lele of ever having said India would lose the series 3-0.

Internet channel rediff on the net had quoted Lele as saying India had no chance against the Australians and is sticking by its story.

"As far as we’re concerned the chapter is closed - he has assured us that there is nothing in it," tour manager Mahendra Bhargava said.

"We have never heard anything like this from him before. I would never think that he would give a statement like this.

"The players are satisfied. We’ll stop it at that and let the players get on with cricket."

The first test begins in Adelaide on December ten.

India have chosen a strong team for the four-day match in Mackay against Queensland, current leaders of the inter-state championship.

Teams:

India: Sachin Tendulkar (captain), Sourav Ganguly, Devang Gandhi, Sadagoppan Ramesh, Rahul Dravid, Vijay Bharadwaj, Mannava Prasad, Anil Kumble, Venkatesh Prasad, Debashish Mohanty, Thiru Kumaran, Venkata Laxman.

Queensland: Stuart Law (captain), Matthew Hayden, Jimmy Maher, Martin Love, Andrew Symonds, Geoff Foley, Wade Seccombe, Andrew Bichel, Adam Dale, Scott Muller, Matthew Anderson, Joe Dawes. (REUTERS)

ATF Asia Cup Tennis
India struggle to beat China

NEW DELHI, Nov 25: An off-colour Leander Paes struggled in his singles match before losing to China’s Zhu Ben Qiang as India was stretched to the deciding doubles tie before closing it out 2-1 for a semifinal berth in the 84,000 ATF Asia Cup Team Tennis Championship here today.

Paes, probably suffering from jetlag, was caught unawares by Chinese no.1 Zhu as he rattled the world’s best doubles player with gutsy play.

The Indian, who arrived in the Capital only last night, easily won the first set 6-4, but then Zhu started tiring Paes with long rallies to take the next two sets 6-2 6-2 and level the three-match rubber 1-1.

Prahlad Srinath had put India ahead with a workmanlike 6-2 6-2 win over Chinese no.2 Xu ran in just over an hour.

Paes then paired with Syed Fazaluddin in the absence of regular partner Mahesh Bhupathi and the two saw to it that two-time champion India stayed in the hunt for continental supremacy for the third straight year.

The duo defeated the Chinese tandem of Zhu Ben Qiang and Jiang Shan 6-3 6-3 in just 70 minutes to give India a place in the last four, where they meet Japan from the bottom half of the draw.

Earlier in the day, India a succumbed 0-3 to South Korea in a placement match.

The second string Indians - Sunil Kumar and Vijay Kannan -showed few sparks of brilliance but overall, the Koreans proved too hot to handle. (PTI)
