Series not about just 2 players, says Tendulkar

BRISBANE, Nov 24: The Indian cricket team arrived here today on a 76-day tour of Australia amid expectations of renewed confrontation between captain andSachin Tendulkar Aussie spin wizard Shane Warne.

The Indian captain, however, put the tour in perspective, saying the series is not just about two players.

There are other good bowlers in the Australian side besides Shane as there are other batsmen in the Indian team besides me, Tendulkar told reporters.

The star batsman, in his second stint as captain, said there are other things in my head (than Warne) as I am sure there must be other things in his mind.

The Indians arrived by a Malaysian Airlines flight after a six-hour stopover in Kuala Lumpur.

Tendulkar said his back was okay but added there is a larger responsibility on me than solely my batting.

Looking forward to the tour engagements, which include three test matches and a triangular one-day series also involving Pakistan, coach Kapil Dev said I have no doubt, if the boys play to their potential, we will be a threat.

We have a fair bit of talent and I expect batsmen like Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar to do well since they are strokemakers and these are wickets where the ball comes on to the bat, Kapil said.

Both Tendulkar and his coach were all praise for Australia’s latest sensation, new test wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, who hit an unbeaten 149, and with centurion Justin Langer took Australia to a record win against Pakistan in the deciding second game at Hobart.

He appears a very wristy player.... For an Australian to be so is intersting. Such players can vary the pace and placement of their shots. I think he would be a success even on spinners’ tracks back in the sub-continent, Kapil said.

Saying that Gilchrist packed a fair bit of punch in his shots, and also places them well, Tendulkar hoped the Aussie would not prove a problem for the Indian bowlers.

The team got down to a net session at the Gabba cricket ground to get a feel of the conditions for what promises to be a long and exhausting tour. It begins with a 4-day game here against Queensland starting on Friday.

Meanwhile, shrewd Australian captain Steve Waugh, on top after the extraordinary series win in Hobart - his first at home as captain - has his opponents sized up.

Waugh doubts the Indians’ ability to be at the peak of their game for six hours at a stretch and realises he only needs to go through the top order to dismiss the rest.

The Australians, who do their homework well, know that Anil Kumble must be played down the ground in the ‘V’, as there is no point in risking too many cross-bat shots against the leg-spinner who comes on to the bat and gives little away.

The Indians will need much more than skill, as Pakistan have learned, to tackle the pragmatic Australians on their home turf. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, Nov 24: Thailand today stormed into the semifinals of the 84,000-dollar Asia Cup Tennis Tournament, blanking out Korea 2-0 in the inaugural encounter.

Donald, Atherton set to renew rivalry

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 24: One of cricket’s greatest rivalries will resume tomorrow when South Africa attempt to extend their winning streak to four in a row in the first test against England at the wanderers.

At the heart of the confrontation will be the battle between England opener Mike Atherton and South African paceman Allan Donald, who many believe hold the key to outcome of the five match series.

It was at the wanderers in the 1995/96 season that Atherton won the first round of a four-year battle with Donald as he scored an unbeaten 185 to help England save the second test. Although South Africa went on to win the five match series 1-0, Atherton remained South Africa’s achilles heel.

During the fourth test of the 1998 series in England, Atherton and Mark Butcher saw off one of the best spells of fast bowling ever seen from Donald to help England win the match. England went on to take the final test and the series 2-1.

Atherton and Donald admitted this week that they were relishing the opportunity to renew their on-the-field battles but maintained that they were still friends off the field.

"That’s what it’s all about," Donald said. "Out on the field we play it hard but I don’t see why we shouldn’t be able to have a chat and a beer afterwards."

The expected battle looked in doubt earlier this week when Donald arrived in Johannesburg suffering from a side strain.

Flying colours

But yesterday, he was put through his paces by coach Graham Ford and passed a fitness test with flying colours.

"Daai Engelse Gaan Kak (those Englishmen are going to suffer)," Donald quipped after the session.

Donald will be up against an in-form Atherton, who has scored at least 80 in every one of the three first class matches England have played on the tour.

"Yes, I’m happy with my form but it’s important to know that tomorrow, everything moves up a gear," Atherton said. "We’re playing in one of the most intimidating grounds in South Africa and, unlike our other games, they’ll be plenty of people watching."

England have named three debutants in a squad of 12 with all-rounder Gavin Hamilton likely to force left arm spinner Phil Tufnell into carrying the drinks. Hamilton also adds some more substance to a batting line-up that Atherton aside, has looked vulnerable.

Yorkshire’s Michael Vaughan and Sussex’s Chris Adams will also make their debuts.

South Africa named a squad of 13 at the weekend with the experienced opening pairing of Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs called in to replace Adam Bacher and Boeta Dippenaar who played in the team that beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in a home and away test series two weeks ago. (REUTERS)

Uzbekistan continues winning spree

ABU DHABI, Nov 24: Favourites Uzbekistan continued their winning spree, thrashing Sri Lanka 6-0 and fancied United Arab Emirates got the better of Bangladesh 3-0 in the Asia Cup group three qualifiers at the Al Ain Stadium here last night.

India, who went down 1-3 to UAE on Sunday, will take on Uzbekistan in their second match tonight.

In their match against Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan shot into the lead in the third minute when striker Irismetov seized on Bazarov Bavshan’s weak header to put his side one up.

Two goals from Shirshov Nikolay and one from mid-fielder Davletov Fevzi saw them taking a virtually unassailabale lead of 4-0.

After the breather, Uzbekistan, dazzling the crowd with excellent football, saw Sri Lankan goalkeeper Mohed Illyas dash recklessly out of his area to chase a loose ball in the 49th minute. This provided a good chance to Nikolay to score his team’s fifth goal.

The sixth goal was scored by Bazarov Bavshan in the dying moments of the game even as Sri Lanka failed to create any opportuntiy for reducing the margin of their defeat. (UNI)
