Bajalta, adjoining villages face official apathy

By Avtar Bhat

JAMMU, Nov 23: Living in abject poverty and negligence the inhabitants of over 21 villages comprising of three Panchayats adjoining Bajalta in Purmandal Block are worst sufferers of official apathy for years together.

Though area is 14 to 20 kilometers away from Jammu city but the entire belt is in seclusion as maximum villages have no road links and other means of development.

The main problem which this entire belt is facing is that despite being nearer to Jammu it has been linked with Samba tehsil which is over 45 kilometers away from the Bain Bajalta the nearer village to Jammu.

Though the area is a part of Nagrota Nagrota Assembly Constituency, yet the peoples demand of merging it with Jammu tehsil has not been conceded by the authorities for unknown reasons and people having any work at tehsil office have to go Samba after wasting their entire day.

Among the three Panchayats of Bain Bajalta, Kanachurgal and Athem, the Bajalta has five villages which besides Bain Bajalta are Chak Largan, Malhore Jagir, Kuppar and Pargalta with a total population of about five thousand.

Narrating the woes of the people Hony Capt (retd) Romal Singh said that there is no road link from Bajalta Railway Station to Kupper village and people face tough time while taking an ill person to Hospital. Some times a person dies in the way due to lack of proper medicare facilities.

There are no proper schooling facilities in the area. In the entire belt there is a one High School at Kanachurgal and Middle School in Bajalta.

What can be more negligent attitude of the authorities towards the area and its people says Subash Sumbria of village Kupper that the High School Kanachurgal remained closed for three days recently which was also witnessed by Director School Education and still no action was taken.

There is no Higher Secondary School in the area and students have to come Jammu for seeking admission for 10+2 standard.

The demand of the people regarding upgradation of High School Kanachurgal to 10+2 Standard and Middle School Bajalta is still hanging fire.

There is only one ayurvedic Dispensary at Bajalta in this entire Kandi belt and people even for minor ailments have to visit Jammu, he said, adding our demand for opening a Health Centre at centrally located place has been ignored by the authorities.

The situation is no way better in seven villages of Kanachurgal Panchayat. Falling at a distance of three kilometers from Bain Bajalta these villages san link roads, said Ram Saran Sharma of Churgal.

While taking the Government to task for the underdevelopment of this entire Kandi belt he alleged no attention has been provided to develop the roads and ghalis here.

Narrating the woes of the villagers he said people of this entire Panchayat face acute scarcity of drinking water and they have to go upto a distance of two kilometers to fetch the drinking water.

The seven villages of this Panchayat include Churgal, Kana, Mela, Pangal, Sandhore, Dhun and Sandhi has a population of about 8000. The maximum number of these villagers is living below poverty line as the successive Governments have failed to pay attention for the development of the area.

In the hamlets of Pargalta, More Surah, Mohallah Gujran and Sandori people face multiple problems. The Sandori village is without electrification, said Sahrifa a social worker of the area. The poles have been erected 10 years back but no wires were laid later on, she added.

The Mohallah Harijan which also falls in Kanachurgal village people have been deprived of water supply.

There is no building for Sara Primary School and students are studying in open. The construction of the building was undertaken by the Rural Development Department few years back but after constructing the four walls the work was abandoned for the best reasons known to them, said Hony Capt (retd) Romal Singh.

Atem is the third Panchayat of this area which also consists of seven villages of about seven thousand population. They are Largan, Pahargrain, Sail Jagir, Padhoon, Japta, Jalni and Athem.

The problems here too are alike the other two Panchayats. The village Padhon is with out water supply though the pipes have been laid 20 years back, says Naseeb Singh.

He said the tube wells were also dug but later the work was abandoned for unknown reasons by the authorities.

The people’s demand for construction of the bridge over Sardh nallah has also not been conceded till date. In this Kandi belt the farmers are also facing the acute shortage of fertilizers and their main complaint is that DAP is not being sold at any fixed rate.
