Khosa releases Telephone Directory for KPs Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Telephone Directory of Kashmiri Pandits residing in Bhagwati Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Purannagar, Udhaiwala Colony and BSF Complex was today released by president Kashmiri Pandit Sabha, Ambphalla, Mr T N Khosa at a function here. As per a release, the directory has been compiled by Mr H N Tiku, a prominent social worker and vice president of Mohinder Nagar, Ashok Nagar and Bhagwati Nagar Welfare Committee. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Khosa hailed the efforts of Mr Tiku in compiling the directory. He said the need of such directories has become a necessity for the scattered community to keep track of each other and preserve culture. He also appealed the Kashmiri Pandit families in state and outside to bring reforms in avoidable and cumbersome customs both in the marriages as well as death rites. He while expressing concern over the plight of the community said five to ten percent of the community members are virtually facing starvation and hence it is obligatory for the community to adopt ways and means to see that no member starves. He said best way to overcome this problem is to raise a welfare fund on monthly basis. Earlier welcoming the dignitaries Mr Tiku said mass exodus of the KPs from the Valley and their scattered settlement at different places in the country has forced him to compile the directory to revive the chain of relations with each other. He thanked Messrs V K Sadhu, Dy Sp Fire Services and Chaman Lal Koul for their contribution. |
Piara Singh warns Govt on power cuts Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Ch. Piara Singh, MLA Gandhinagar has expressed his utter dismay over the thaw that has taken place on developmental works which has retarded the progress of the state as a whole particularly in Jammu. In a statement issued here today, he criticised the State Government for its failure to ensure implementation of various programmes despite passing of the budget and extending assistance by Centre on various accounts. He while expressing concern over the deterioration in the supply of electricity in Jammu said the people are facing 10 hour long power curtailments a day. He said this has affected the industries in Jammu who pay about Rs 26,000 monthly towards the electric charges but are still subjected to three hour power cut during the working hours. He said the State Government which has failed to recover the electricity charges from people in Kashmir Valley has made the people of Jammu a scape goat. He said why the Government is not cutting the power supply in those areas where the people are not paying the tariff. He said there is a brewing resentment among the people in Jammu and in case the power curtailment problem continues in Jammu people will come on the streets. |
JEF holds meeting to discuss strategy for Kam Chore Hartal Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: To make the November 30 Kam Chore Hartal a success, the call for which has been given by Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), the J&K Joint Employees Federation (JEF) held a meeting of its office bearers in which the strategy for the proposed strike was discussed. The meeting which was presided over by Mr Mushtaq Ahmed Khan strongly criticised rigid attitude of State Government towards the agreed demands of the employees which include release of second installment of fifth Pay Commission arrears and two DA installments due from January and July. Addressing the meeting Mr Mushtaq Ahmed Khan endorsed the full support to the demands of the Employees Joint Action Committee. He urged the State Government to fulfill these demands immediately and avoid confrontation with the employees. He alleged that State Government has failed to implement the agreement reached with Employees Joint Action Committee on January 19 after 18 day strike. He said the unprecedented hike in essential commodities and recent hike in prices of diesel has broken the back of State Government employees. He said the situation has left us with no alternative except to fight this onslaught and launch a powerful struggle to force the Government to settle the demands. He said being a constituent of the EJAC, J&K JEF is bound to follow its each and every programme to achieve the goal. The members of different affiliated wings of the J&K JEF participated in the meeting. They include Messrs Surinder Mohan, Vidya Lal, Bansi Lal, Abdul Qayoom Wani, Rajbir Singh, V R Chib, Ashok Kumar, Dwarika Dass Sharma, M K Gigoo, Vachtpati Sadotra, Kuldeep Saraf, Nazir Ahmed Bhat, Mulkh Raj, Dharam Paul, Vijay Bhartwaj, Soba Ram, Mohan Lal, S Dara Singh, Ami Chand, Tilk Raj, Gopal Krishan, Vijay Kumar Koul, Sheilo Ram, Nasiru Din and Yash Paul Koushal. Employees to hold protest demonstration on Nov 26 Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 26: All J&K Low Paid Government Employees Federation has decided to organise a demonstration on November 26 to lodge protest against failure of the Government to accept their long pending demands. According to a press release, a one day seminar of leadership and executives of Government Employees Organisations, State Employees Conference Kashmir Valley, All J&K Low Paid Government Employees Federation and Ladakh Employees Front was held at Company Bagh under the chairmanship of Mr Sugreev Singh to chalk out the programme. Meeting demanded two DA installments from January 1999, release of second installment of 5th Pay Commission, COLA for Public Sector employees. Meeting regretted that State Government has yet not shown sympathetic and compassionate approach towards State employees who have been serving the trouble torn State. It was decided in the seminar to constitute a five member committee consisting Mr Sampat Praksh, Shakti Gupta, Surgreev Singh, Ashraf Qadrie and Nisar Ali Mir to urgently hold indepth discussion with economic experts of the State and other prominent members of the society for their cooperation, assistance and guidance for onward agitation. The proposed protest march would start from Canal Head and culminated at New Secretariat. |

J&K Sikh Unity Forum holds dharna in Jammu Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22 : All J&K Sikh Unity Forum staged dharna in front of the office of Divisional Commissioner Jammu here today. A large number of activists thronged the office of the Divisional Commissioner and raised slogans against the state government for its alleged discrimination against the Sikh community. They alleged that injustice was being done by the ruling government with the Sikhs in the state. The members demanded that Punjabi language be introduced in Schools of the Jammu and Kashmir. They alleged that Dr Abdullah despite assurance did not give representation to the Sikh members in the Ministry. He befooled the members of the community for his motives. He had publicly assured at the function held at the Samadi of Bibi Chand Kour last year that demands of the Sikh community members would be looked into. But all the tall false claims remained hollow and unattended. This attitude of the government has created a strong resentment among the members of the community who have left with no option and have decided to launch an agitation. The community members in the entire state would be involved in this agitation if the government failed to take up the matter on priority, the members said. |

for Vaishnodevi Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: The Air Service between Mumbai-Srinagar and helicopter service between Jammu-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji Shrine will be started very soon. This was stated by the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta while addressing a largely attended public meeting today at Doda during the first leg of his 4-day extensive tour of the district. He said that efforts would be made to extend helicopter services between Jammu-Doda and Kishtwar also. He said that the Union Government is very keen to provide all possible help to the J&K State Government for equal development of all the three regions of the State and to improve the socio-economic standard of the people. Referring to the power crisis, Prof Gupta said that there is a vital scope for the generation of additional 15,000 MWs power in the State. For this purpose, he will take up the matter with the concerned authorities to explore the possibility for the construction of Buglayar and Savlakote Hydro Electric Projects in Jammu division which would generate more power and also provide employment venues for the people of the State in general and of Doda district in particular. Prof Gupta said that Village Defence Committees will be further strengthened and will be equipped with sophiscated weapons and better communication net work to curb the militancy. He appealed the people to maintain the communal harmony and brotherhood for the peace and prosperity of the State. During the tour, the Union Minister also visited Batore, Assar and Khelani and addressed various public meetings. A number of deputations and individuals called on the Minister and apprised him of their problems. He assured them that he will take up the matter with the concerned ministry for the redressal of their grievances. |
Governor greets people on Gurupurab Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: The Governor, Mr Girish Chandra Saxena, has greeted the people of the State on the occasion of Gurupurab, the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. In a message, the Governor said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji, with his devotion, selfless service and sacrifice, showed a way of life to mankind which emphasised the values of righteousness, truth, charity, compassion and love. The message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji to his followers, to believe in oneness of God, to eschew discrimination based on birth and faith, to shun hatred and superstition and to dedicate themselves to the service of mankind, particularly the poor and the needy, is relevant to the whole humanity for all times and generations. The Governor added that the Guru's teachings laid the foundation of an enlightened social order and also helped in strengthening the secular ethos of our composite culture. Mr Saxena expressed the hope that on this occasion the people will rededicate themselves to the values underlying Guru Nanak's teaching and will celebrate the day with traditional gaiety and fervour. |
CM condemns blat at Editor's residence Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah today condemned the explosion at the residence, of Editor, Daily Afaaq in Srinagar. Describing this as an attack on the freedom of the press, the Chief Minister said intimidation by militants cannot throttle the freedom of the press. He hoped that such incidents will not be repeated. He asked the journalists to keep reporting fearlessly and truthfully. Meanwhile, the Minister for Information, Science and Technology and Sports, Mr Ajatshatru Singh, while condemning the incident has said that elements inimical to peace will not succeed in their nefarious designs. He hoped the press will continue to report fearlessly and fulfil its responsibility towards people and the society. |

Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Various social and political organisations have condoled the demise of Mr Rehmat-ullah Bhat, father of former Union Minister Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad who passed away the other day. Meanwhile large number of people attended the burial procession of Mr Bhat who was laid to the rest at Gujjar Nagar graveyard this afternoon. Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah today visited Bathendi to convey his personal condolences on the passing away of Mr Bhat. He also offered Namaz-e-Jenaza and was accompanied by several Ministers, legislators, political leaders and social workers. Pradesh Congress Committee today held a meeting to condole the demise of Mr Rehmat-ullah Bhat, father of AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad. The meeting conveyed heart felt condolences to Mr Azad and prayed for peace to the departed soul. Teachers threaten to boycott coming exams Excelsior Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Nov 22: The teachers have resolved to boycott the coming Board examinations if the state government failed accept their demands. According to a release, a meeting of the teachers was held on Sunday under the chairmanship of Mr Abdul Qayoom Wani, state chairman of J&K Teachers Forum at Dabbar Park, Udhampur. The others who addressed the massive gathering includedMr Ghulam Rasool Bhat-state general secretary, Mr Ghulam Mohd Hamdard- chief organiser, Mr Mohi-ud-Din-senior advisor, Mr Phupinder Shastri provincial vice president, Mr Ganesh Khajuria- provincial general secretary, Mr Ved Parkash-District president Udhampur and Mr Sanjay Sharma-District president Jammu. Earlier, the District teachers body welcomed the members of Central body. The teachers in general expressed satisfaction over the performance of the organisation. They expressed that teachers would fight unitedly without succumbing to any pressure. Teachers now can not be misled by the hollow and false promises of the government. The speakers at the meeting said that government was asked to issue formal orders regarding pay anomaly as decided on July 21 this year. But nothing was done in this regard. They criticised the NC government for adopting delaying tactics and over its criminal silence. It was resolved to launch state-wide agitation would be launched and the teachers would also plan to boycott the coming Board exams if the demands were not met at the earliest. |
Awami Sangharsh Morcha stagses protest dharna Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: The Jammu Awami Sangharsh Morcha leaders observed one day hunger strike today in front of office of the Divisional Commissioner Jammu. They were protesting against the continued power curtailment and increase in power tariff by the State Govt., administered increase in diesel prices followed by increase in transport fare including buses and matadors by the Union Govt. and shortage of water supply in the rural and urban areas of Jammu province. Mr Dhan Raj Bargotra JD(S), Hari Chand Jalmeria (CPM), M. L. Kapoor (CPI), Nirdosh Uppal (CPI), Mohan Lal Swara (CPM), Rakesh Chargotra (JJSF), Tek Chand Spolia (CPM), Nirmal Chander (AL), Sandesh Kumar (SFI), Gopal Dass (CPM), Nek Ram JD (S), Ghan Sham Singh (CPM), Mrs Kanta Devi Gandotra JD (S) and Kishore Kumar (CPM), observed one day hunger strike. The Morcha leaders observed that the Government on the one hand has increased salaries and other facilities of the Governors, Ministers, Legislators, High Court Judges & other higher ups tremendously which has heavily burdened the State and National exchequer and on the other hand is denying the basic fascilities to the people and increasing the burden on their lives. The power curtailment has made the commoners unemployed who are working with small industrial units at different places in cities and remote areas of the Jammu province. Students are the worst sufferers. The Morcha asked the Government to concede the demands with in a fortnight or else the Morcha would launch chain hunger strike in the third phase of the agitation. |
HC stays allotment of plots to Housing Board employees Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Division Bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court comprising Mr Justice Bhawani Singh (CJ) and Mr Justice M Y Kawoosa stayed the allotment made by the J&K Housing Board to its employees and others without resorting to open public allotment system. The direction came after an LPA was filed by one Mr R K Koul in the Division Bench of the High Court. It was held by the Court that the allotments prima facie, step appears unconstitutional, arbitrary and unreasonable. Further, the MD J&K Housing Board has been directed that he shall ensure that no further action and construction persuant to the allotment made by the Board is undertaken by the allotees till otherwise directed by this court. The case was filed in the interest of the general public by Mr Koul through his counselMr Sunil Hali after the Management of the Housing Board, made allotment of plots in the favour of some of its employees. This move caused resentment among the general public on the grounds that no such special quota has been approved by the government for the Board employees and that too, at the prime locations. It was also alleged that no income criteria was considered while making the allotments. So, a litigation was filed in the court of law. |
