Waughs confidence rewarded as Pak crumble in 2nd test HOBART (AUSTRALIA), Nov 18: Steve Waughs confidence in his Australian bowlers yielded dividends as Pakistan were dismissed for 222 on the opening day of the second cricket test at Bellerive Oval here today. Just like he did in the Brisbane Test, the Australian skipper backed his bowlers in sending Pakistan into bat and was rewarded when the tourists crumbled to be all out off 72.5 overs, some 40 minutes after tea. In reply, Australia were away to a handy start and negotiated 16 overs in chilly conditions to be 29 without loss at the close of an eventful first days play in the three-test series. Michael Slater, who negotiated a couple of hair-raising moments facing tearaway Shoaib Akhtar bowling downwind, was not out 16 with greg blewett on nine. Australia are one-up in the series after cruising home to a 10-wicket victory in the opening test at the Gabba earlier this month. Once Glenn McGraths opening six-over spell netted him two wickets for 250 test career dismissals, Australia were in command of the first day. Opener Mohammad Wasim fell nine runs short of his third test century as the only Pakistani batsman to score above 30. Wasim, dropped by McGrath in a difficult chance at mid-on which led to his 50, was out to a spectacular acrobatic catch by wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist when on 91. He played a thick edge to a loose Scott Muller delivery and Gilchrist gloved the catch swan-diving across Shane Warne at first slip. (AFP) |

Tour World Doubles Champ HARTFORD (Connecticut), Nov 18: The top-seeded team of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi beat eighth seed Piet Norval of South Africa and Zimbabwes Kevin Ullyett in straight sets at the ATP Tour World Doubles Championship. In a gold group match last night, the Indians defeated their opponents 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. Paes and Bhupathi, the 1997 champions here, became the first team since 1952 to reach all four Grand Slam finals this season, winning the French Open and Wimbledon in addition to a title at the Gold Flake Open in their homeland at Chennai. Dutchman Paul Haarhuis began defence of his doubles championship without the help of his long-time partner Jacco Eltingh. The difference was evident. Two-time champions and second seeds Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde of Australia dumped the seventh-seeded pair of Haarhuis and American Jared Palmer 6-4 6-2 in a green group round-robin match. Haarhuis helped Eltingh end his career in perfect fashion last season when they won this event, beating Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor in the final. It was the last of 39 titles the two claimed together. This season Haarhuis tried out various partners before settling on Palmer, with whom he reached five finals, including Wimbledon. Their only title this year came at the RCA Championships in Indianapolis in August. The "Woodies" are in the midst of their longest title drought as a team. They have not won a tournament since capturing the Sybase Open in San Jose and Kroger St. Jude in Memphis in February, but have reached five other finals. Woodbridge and Woodforde won this event in 1992 and 1996 and reached the final in 1993 and 1994. The third-seeded team of South African Ellis Ferreira and American Rick Leach defeated sixth-seeded Wayne Black of Zimbabwe and Sandon Stolle of Australia 6-3 6-2 in a gold group match. The fourth-seeded duo of Sebastien Lareau of Canada and Alex Obrien of the United States beat fifth-seeded South Africans David Adams and John-Laffnie De Jager 6-2 7-6 (7-5) in a green group encounter. Round-Robin action was to continue on Thursday with Bhupathi and Paes facing Ferreira and Leach, the "Woodies" meeting Lareau and Obrien, Haarhuis and Palmer battling Adams and De Jager, and Black and Stolle playing Norval and Ullyett. This event uses a round-robin format with eight teams divided into two groups. Each pairing plays the others in their group once, and the top two teams with the best record in each group advance to Saturdays semifinals. The standings in each group are determined by the number of matches won. Each victory is worth 20,000 dollars and an undefeated winner would take home 190,000 dollars of the 900,000-dollar total purse. (REUTERS) |
Davenport, Williams advance at Chase Champ NEW YORK, Nov 18: The American duo of Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams overcame thigh injuries last night to reach the quarterfinals of the 2-million dollars Chase Championships after three set struggles. Second-seed Davenport recovered from a first-set deficit to post a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Australian open runner-up Amelie Mauresmo of France. Davenport, plagued by a pulled hamstring, gained victory in 1 hour 42 minutes. Tournament number 3 Venus Williams was pushed to the limit by Spanish veteran Conchita Martinez before prevailing after 2 hours 10 minutes, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to complete the first round of the season-ender bringing together the worlds 16 best players. "I never expected such a tough match. I havent played a three-setter in a long while," conceded Williams, who also has thigh troubles. Venus has to keep the Williams flag flying alone at Madison Square Garden after her sister, the U.S. Open champion Serena, had to cancel her appearance because of injury. In tomorrows quarterfinals, Williams meets Austrian 7th seed Barbara Schett, Davenport takes on unseeded German Anke Huber, who routed 8th seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France in 44 minutes, 6-1, 6-2 in a match played early yesterday. "Of course I would have preferred to have played Mauresmo, but I have to take it as it comes. I have nothing to lose against Lindsay," said Huber, who has lost the last three meetings with the Wimbledon champion for a career 9-2 deficit in their series. Huber may have a chance if Davenport fails to overcome the injury which has bothered her since she won the Philadelphia title last weekend against world number 1 Martina Hingis. "I have trouble when I have to quickly change direction. I feel a sharp pain then," conceded Davenport. The American showed fighting spirit against event Novice Mauresmo, who seemed on course to victory after dominating the first set. "I am very disappointed, I wasted a big chance against Lindsay," said Mauresmo. The defeats of Mauresmo and Halard-Decugis have halved the French Quartet at Madison Square Garden. Fifth seed Mary Pierce may be the next to fall by the wayside as she meets Hingis on Thursday in opening quarterfinal action. The sixth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat meets Belgian Dominique Van Roost in the days other match. Also yesterday the WTA tour announced they had finally found a new title sponsor in the form of the Sara Lee Corporation who are most famous for their body care product Sanex. "This is a great day for womens tennis because it is the biggest deal in the history of the WTA tour," said WTA boss Bart McGuire of the five-year deal which is reportedly worth a total 30-40 million dollars. Lele contradicts Kapil, says Jadeja not for SA MUMBAI, Nov 18 : Cricket Board Secretary Jaywant Lele today refuted coach Kapil Devs statement that batsman Ajay Jadeja will go to South Africa to get his shoulder injury treated and said the player will miss the upcoming Australian tour if Tests reveal any muscle tear. Lele told PTI over phone from Baroda that Medical reports of the injury has been sent to Johannesburg-based shoulder specialist Dr Mark Ferguson and his report was expected by tomorrow. If the MRI shows a tear in the shoulder then Jadeja will miss the Australian tour as it takes a month to heal. If it is just a sprain he will leave with the rest of the team on November 22, he said. But Lele refuted Kapil Devs announcement in New Delhi that Jadeja was travelling to Johannesburg to consult Ferguson, who treated paceman Javagal Srinath in 1997 for his rotator cuff tear. Asked when Jadeja would be leaving for South Africa if the injury was found serious, Lele Shot back: As far as the Board is concerned there is no need for Jadeja to go to South Africa because a months rest would heal the tear. It completely differed with Kapil Devs statement that Jadeja will go to South Africa and the BCCI had agreed to bear the expenses. There was much confusion surrounding Jadejas whereabouts with neither Lele nor Board officials here able to confirm where he was. Asked whether Jadeja will seek the advise of Mumbai-based specialist Dr Anant Joshi, who had recently accompanied Sachin Tendulkar to Australia for back treatment, Lele said we are not aware of it as he has not got in touch with us. Boards Executive secretary, Sharad Diwadkar, said he was not aware of Jadejas whereabouts as he had not got in touch, while Dr Joshi was not available for comment. But according to cricketing circles, Jadeja is very much in Mumbai and had visited Dr Joshis private clinic at Dadar. The 28-year-old batsman, who suffered the injury during the just-ended one-day series against New Zealand, batted but did not field in the fourth game at Guwahati on November 14 and missed the final match in Delhi yesterday which India won. Jadeja had only recently recovered from a calf muscle tear he suffered during the September 1 to 8 triseries in Singapore that had put him out of action for three weeks. He is reportedly nursing a tear and looks unlikely to leave with the rest of the squad on November 22. Two players from Baroda, wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia and middle-order batsman Jacob Martin, are being mentioned as possible replacements if Jadeja fails to make the trip. Kapil Dev had yesterday told reporters that Jadeja will not be taken to Australia unless his fitness was certain while Selection Committee chairman had said replacement, if needed, would be picked once the medical report was made known.
