Rahul Dravid bags Castrol cricketer of the year award NEW DELHI, Nov 17: Stylish batsman Rahul Dravid, a picture of consistency and tall batting deeds, was awarded the prestigious Castrol cricketer of the year award for 1998-99. The 25-year-old batsman from Karnataka was voted the best performer by past and present Indian players after being nominated for the accolade alongwith Sachin Tendulkar, winner last year when the award was instituted, leg spinner Anil Kumble, paceman Javagal Srinath and left-hander Saurav Ganguly. Dravid, who silenced critics who felt he was unfit for one-day cricket even while keeping the connoisseurs engrossed with his correct technique, collected a handsome purse of Rs five lakh and an imaginatively crafted trophy. All five nominees were awarded Rs 50,000 each and trophies. Thirtyone players were in the fray for the award and performance in seven tests and 46 one-dayers were the basis for selection. All former and current test players and those who had played atleast five one-dayers formed the electorate. Dravid was adjudged the best after emerging the highest run-getter in the World Cup in England with a huge tally of 461 runs, including two centuries, and struck hundred in both innings of the third and final test in New Zealand this January and the scores of runs that have continued to flow from his bat. Diminutive Mumbai left-arm spinner, Rajesh Pawar, who capped his fine efforts in the past three seasons by claiming his career-best haul of six for 19 in the ongoing Ranji League tie against Maharashtra, was given the award for the most promising junior. The 20-year-old Pawar could not make it as he was playing the Ranji game and his Mumbai teammate Ajit Agarkar collected the award and prizemoney on his behalf at a grand function organised at the Indian Habitat Centre last evening. The entire Indian team and several former stars led by former captains Sunil Gavaskar, who also handed the trophy to Tendulkar, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Chandu Borde besides Maninder Singh were present. Independent Indias first captain, Lala Amarnath, had also made it a point to be present at the function, which was highlighted by a grand laser show depicting all five nominees playing their favourite strokes. Ram Savoor, Chief Executive and Managing Director of Castrol India, announced that a lifetime achievement award would be included from next year. Anil Kumble, who has been rested for the last two matches of the one-day series against New Zeland, was absent. (PTI) |
Kiwis skipper reads Kotla wicket wrongly NEW DELHI, Nov 17: New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming read the the Ferozshah Kotla wicket wrongly today and paid the price as the visitors lost the fifth one-day international and the series by seven wickets. "After a look at the wicket, we thought it would not last the whole day and elected to bat," Fleming said during his post match interaction with mediapersons. Kotla wicket, traditionally known to favour batsmen, had something else in store today as runs could not flow at the will of the batsmen. Barring some lusty hitting by man of the match as also the series Saurav Ganguly, the Indian chase, faced with the modest target, was also not as fast as one could expect. India surpassed the target of 179 with barely six overs to spare. Fleming said the Kotla wicket played slow. "The Indians fielded and bowled very well. We thought a total of 220 would be worth defending, but in the first 15 overs we could not get the bowlers away and put pressure on the Indians," he said. While defending a meagre total, his side needed some early wickets, Fleming said. "But the rest did not come up." The Kiwi skipper also sorely missed the services of Dion Nash and Craig Mcmillan who dropped out mid way through the series because of injuries. Despite having lost the test series (0-1) and the one-day Pepsi Cup (2-3), Fleming, however, had no complaints against the Indian wickets. "The tracks were good and we were happy," he said while withholding comments on umpiring. The Kiwi skipper, who had under his belt a historic 2-1 test series against England on the English soil, said,"we are a young side and should be ready to face any challenges." His Indian counterpart Sachin Tendulakar, euphoric after the twin win, complimented the entire team for the effort in clinching the decider today. "Sometimes it is good to lose the toss and the win here would prepare us for the upcoming 76-day tour to Australia beginning later this month," the master batsman said. (UNI) |
Jadeja doubtful for Aussies tour NEW DELHI, Nov 17: Middle-order batsman Ajay Jadeja looks doubtful for Indias upcoming tour of Australia after suffering a suspected shoulder tear, and the Cricket Board has asked him to prove his fitness by November 19. The 28-year-old player, who reportedly hurt his shoulder during the second one-day tie at Hyderabad in the ongoing series against New Zealand, will know his physical condition after his medical report is studied by South African orthopaedic specialist Mark Ferguson who is expected to give his opinion in a day or two. Board secretary Jaywant Lele told PTI if Jadejas shoulder injury was serious, the selectors would announce on November 19 his replacement in the 16-member squad leaving for down under on November 22. Jadeja had carried the injury while playing in the fourth one-dayer in Guwahati, but was ruled out of todays tie here with paceman Javagl Srinath coming into the side. Though Lele refused to name any replacement, wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia is being mentioned as a front-runner, especially after his young replacement M S K Prasads ordinary efforts in the present series. Selection Committee chairman Chandu Borde said his panel was awaiting the report from Ferguson, and any decision on a replacement would be based on it. Jadeja, a surprise choice for the tour, has been grappling with injuries of late. He missed the series against the West Indies in Toronto in September after a calf muscle tear suffered during the Singapore triangular tournament earlier that month. (PTI) |
