Advanta Championship PHILADELPHIA, Nov 15: Five weeks after suffering a wrist injury that had her contemplating sitting out the rest of the year, Lindsay Davenport won her final tuneup for this weeks season-ending Chase Championships with a 6-3 6-4 victory over number one-ranked Martina Hingis in the title match of the 520,000 dollars Advanta Championships. The victory was the number two-ranked Davenports sixth tournament title of 1999. She had lost in the Advanta finals in the last two years, to Hingis in 1997 and Steffi Graf last year. Davenport injured her left wrist in a match in Filderstadt, Germany, in a match against Silvia Farina in early October. The original diagnosis was torn cartilage, which would have required surgery, then was determined to be ligament damage, which is considered less serious. Davenport said she still considered taking the rest of the year off, but her coach, Robert Vant Hof, talked her out of it. "I had suggested that maybe I should take the rest of the year off, but he thought it would be good if I could finish the year strong," she said. "It took about a week, but he talked me into it." Davenport was forced to pull out of her doubles match Saturday night when her wrist swelled up, but she was able to bounce back Sunday and play an efficient, controlled match against Hingis, whom she has now defeated in five of her last seven tries dating back to the beginning of 1998. The two hadnt played since the beginning of 1999 at a tournament in Sydney. "I felt I had a lot chances today, and I was taking them," she said. "That allows you to swing freely and with more confidence." Davenport countered Hingis assortment of drop shots, lobs and hard groundstrokes with varied placement on her serves that had Hingis off-balance for much of the match. Davenport lost her serve in the second game of the match and not thereafter. "I was able to serve myself out of trouble a lot today," Davenport said. "Ive been getting more and more out of my serve, and now I know I can hit any type of serve I want on any point. Ive worked on it a lot its been a long process." A service break in the fifth game of the first set was enough for Davenport to carve out an advantage she held until the ninth game, when she broke Hingis again and won the set when Hingis netted a forehand. The second set proceeded on serve as both players saved break points by serving and volleying, hingis in the second game and Davenport in the fifth. Serving at 4-5, Hingis saved one match point with a service winner, and Davenport shanked a backhand return on a second match point before winning the match when Hingis netted a backhand. "I didnt play badly today, she just played better," Hingis said. "I should have taken advantage in the first set, when she wasnt serving as well as she was in the second set." Hingis and Davenport are seeded number one and two, respectively, for this weeks Chase Championships. (REUTERS) |

Langer keeps place in Australian team SYDNEY, Nov 15: Australias cricket selectors today named an unchanged team for the second test against Pakistan, resisting the temptation to drop out-of-form batsman Justin Langer. Langer has been under pressure to retain his place as the teams number three batsman after scoring just 96 runs at an average of 16 in his last six tests. His main rival for the job, South Australian left hander Darren Lehmann, has been in sparkling form, smashing an unbeaten century in last weekends tour game against Pakistan. But Australias selectors decided to stick with Langer for the second test which starts in Hobart on Thursday. Australia won last weeks first test by ten wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the best of three game series. Pakistan captain Wasim Akram said he was surprised by Australias decision not to pick Lehmann in the side and move Mark and Steve Waugh up the order. "I think he should be the first middle order choice, maybe after both the Waughs," he said. "He should be there because he is one of the best players Australia has in both forms of cricket, test match and one-dayers." Australia - Steve Waugh (captain), Shane Warne, Greg Blewett, Damien Fleming, Adam Gilchrist, Justin Langer, Glenn Mcgrath, Colin Miller, Scott Muller, Michael Slater, Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh (12th man to be named).
