Glowing tributes paid to Nehru Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 14: Glowing tributes were paid by various social and political organisations to Indias first Prime Minister Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru on his 110th birthday anniversary, coinciding with the Childrens Day today. In connection with the Childrens Day, a Hepatitis-B vaccine camp was organised by Rotary Club at Justice Mehar Chand Trust Clinic today. Works Minister Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah inaugurated the camp and called for philanthropic approach and missionary spirit to eradicate this deadly disease. He said that this disease has assumed alarming proportions and hailed the Rotary Club for launching such camp. People on the occasion , however, said that the camp was restricted only to posh areas whiles the other sides of Jammu have been ignored. They demanded such like camps in other areas like Janipur and sub-urbs as well. The Chairman of the Rotary Club, Mr Ganesh Koul on the occasion informed that second vaccine camp would be held at Mahajan Hall Shalamar on November 20. He said that the vaccine is available with the Rotary Club at 75 per cent subsidy. Former Member Parliament, Mr Mangat Ram Sharma has paid rich tributes to Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru on his birth anniversary today. In a statement here, Mr Sharma said that it was due to the efforts of the visionary Nehru that India is marching towards the path of progress. His love for Children was endless , Mr Sharma said and called upon the people to follow his path. Rich tributes were paid to Pt Nehru on his 110 th birth anniversary at a function organised by District Congress Committee Urban here today. The PCC-I chief , Ch Mohd Aslam presided over the meeting. The speakers recalled the contribution of Panditji in laying the foundation of modern India and asserted that whatever progress we see in India today is due to the far-sightedness, magnifying capability and leadership quality of the first Prime Minister of India. In his speech, Ch Aslam said that the country at this hour needs to follow the path shown by Pt Nehru in attaining peace and prosperity. Drivers, cleaners to observe Black Day Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 14: Federation of All Drivers, Operators and Cleaners has warned to observe Black Day on November 25 in support of the various demands of the Federation. As per a release, the decision to this effect was taken in the Federation general meeting held here today under the chairmanship of Mr Balwan Singh. The Federation president, Mr Balvinder Singh was also present in the meeting. The Federation is demanding release of two DA installments, benefits of two and half days pay to employees, release of second and third installment of Pay Commission arrears, treating of drivers and cleaners as technical cadre, restoration of SRO 43, removal of anomalies created in Fifth Pay Commission and regularisation of all drivers and cleaners who are working on daily wages and adhoc basis. |

The prizes were distributed by the Minister for Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Mr Surjit Singh Slathia at Trikuta Nagar, here. English being introduced Govt schools at 1st Pry Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 14: The Government is making conserted efforts to re-orient the overall education system to meet the requirements of the next millennium. As a first step in this direction, English language will be introduced from the 1st primary in all the educational institutions of the State to bridge the gap between the education standards of the Government and private schools. This was stated by the Minister for School Education, Mr Mohammad Sharief Tariq at a function organised as part of the celebrations of Urdu Week by the Rassa Javdhani Memorial Literary Society Jammu in the University Campus here today. The Minister said that Urdu being a deep rooted and sweet language, was made official language in the State because of its rich treasure. He said Urdu will continue to have its place and status in our society and the Government. It has proved an important instrument of uniting various parts of the country from the very inception of this language, he added. Mr Tariq said that we are proud that this language is spoken at the international level and has an universal appeal. He said the Government may consider to make Urdu as compulsory subject from the primary level. Eminent scholar and MLC, Mr MY Tang, speaking on the occasion praised the richness and vocabulary of the Urdu language and urged upon the Government to maintain its status and make efforts to give boost to this as Kashmir has a special relationship with this language. Prof Zrahoor-ud-Din, Head of Department Urdu spoke on the role of Urdu language in the history of Kashmir and its present day usefulness in maintaining the cultural heritage. |

BSP castigates NC Govt for anti SC attitude Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 14: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will hold a one day protest dharna in front of Divisional Commissioners Office on December 1 in support of the Party resolutions which were adopted during the one day workers conference held at Guru Ravi Dass, Bhawan here today. This was announced by Party state chief and MLA Bhadarwah, Sheikh Abdul Rehman while addressing the conference. The BSP supremo also announced that the Party will observe Dr Ambedkars death anniversary on December 6 throughout the state. Expressing the concern over the State Governments indifferent attitude towards the SC, ST and down trodden people of the State he asked his Party cadres to be ready for the state wide struggle if the resolution on various demands adopted by the party was not conceded by the Government. The conference was inaugurated by Mr G L Bhagat senior vice president of the Party and it was presided over by Sheikh Abdul Rehman. Earlier various resolutions for the betterment and welfare of the downtrodden and weaker sections of the society were passed through voice vote. Through one resolution State Government was urged to provide full benefit of reservations to the people belonging to Scheduled Caste category. Moreover, it also demanded proper benefits of reservation to the SCs at divisional and district level and implementation of ten percent reservations to Scheduled Tribes in the state. It also demanded reservation of seats in state Assembly and Parliament for the Scheduled Tribes, withdrawal of SRO 186 and implementation of 27 percent reservations on the recommendations of Mandal Commission to Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Through political resolution the Party castigated both Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Conference (NC) for joining hands together for their vested interests. It took both Central and state governments to task for increasing militancy, corruption and financial crunch being faced in the state. Through this resolution the Party made a declaration that under the prevailing political situation the BSP will perform the role of a responsible opposition in the state. Through another resolution the Party demanded that agriculture loans to the farmers be waived off, border migrants be allotted residential plots in the safer areas, their crops and cattle be insured and they may be provided facilities at par with Kashmiri migrants. The Party also demanded that the people living on International Border (IB) be provided same facilities which have been given to people on Line of Actual Control (LAC) and citizenship rights for Pak refugees. Speaking on the occasion the BSP leaders took the State Government to task for what they alleged its discriminatory attitude towards the Scheduled Caste and downtrodden people. BSP MLA from Samba Mr Som Nath and Party general secretary, Mr Tulsi Dass Langeh while lashing out at NC Government termed it anti Scheduled Caste and downtrodden. While expressing concern over increasing militancy in the state the BSP leaders said the attacks on BSF Headquarters and Army cantonment in Badami Bagh, Srinagar have revealed that both the State and Central Governments claims on containing militancy are totally hollow. They demanded that immediate steps be taken to contain the militancy in State and halt on the harassment of innocent people. vaccine Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU,, Nov 14: The second phase of Hepatitis B Vaccination was jointly conducted by Rotary Club Jammu and Rotract Club GMC at various places here today. Over 1600 individuals mostly comprising of children were administered the Hepatitis B vaccine on the occasion. The camp was simultaneously held at SHS Nursing Home Rehari, Lochan Nursing Home Trikuta Nagar and Vidhata Nursing Home near Residency Road. According to president of the Rotary Club Jammu, Mr Harish Gulati there was a overwhelming response to the camp at all the three places. Mr Gulati hailed the role of young retracts of Government Medical College for making this project a success. He said Rotract president Dushyant Chowdhary and secretary Mr Wasim were the driving force behind this project. The other Rotract members who participated in the camp include Neeraj, Shivani, Gajala, Arshi, Vipul Gulhati, Ajaz Ahmed Malik, Abha and Nidhi Suri, R B Khajuria, Pawan, Anil Gupta, Sanjeev Jain, A S Modi and Amit. Senior Rotracts Messrs Vijay Tandon, R P Setia, B P Munshi and S K Suri were among others who participated in the camp. However, due to the overwhelming response and campaigning launched by the Club during last few days there was a small hiccup in between due to which people have to wait for long to get vaccinated. Mr Gulati while thanking the people for their cooperation has said that in case any registered person has been left out today, he must contact the Lochan Nursing Home between 3 pm to 5pm tomorrow for administrating the vaccine. However, he maintained that no fresh registration will be done. He said the second dose of the vaccine will be given on December 12 while the third on May 12. These two doses will be given on the same vaccination centres on which they were administered today, he added. |

One girl Madhu Bala of Bainglard (Samba Sector) was injured due to Pak firing. She was shifted to GMC Hospital, Jammu. Last evening Railway Police arrested two persons at Railway Station, Jammu and recovered 140 kgs of Bukki from their possession. The arrested persons were identified as Kashmira Singh Balmiki of Ludhiana (Punjab) and Mohd Yousuf Khan of Anantnag (Kashmir). |

Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 14 : Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) National organising secretary, Mr Dattatreya Hosabale has urged upon the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee to safeguard the economic interests of the nation at the review meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) being held at seattle in USA on November 30 to December 2 this year. Addressing a press conference here today, the ABVP leader said that it has been reported that the Western economic powers are proposing some new issues and also contemplating to bring new pressures on the developing countries. The government of India should take a stand for the betterment of the developing countries and also stall the proposal to include social clauses into its agenda. In this context, he said, the ABVP would also submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee immediately after he returns from South Africa tour. He said in the proposed meet at Seattle, India should defeat efforts to bring new sanctions under the pretext of protecting ecology and the pressure to remove quantitative restrictions on import and export. Referring to the prevailing education system in the country, the ABVP leader said that India should not accept the suggestion for curtailing the grants for social and education sector and should organise the developing countries to protest against the hurdles being created by other western countries in making their markets inaccessible. It should also make efforts for reviewing the restrictions on patent laws and also to withstand the pressure of USA. Mr Romesh Pappa, National Secretary ABVP expressing serious concern over the educational related problems of students including the nine-hour long power curtailment, said that working committee of the organisation has passed some resolutions and it going to launch massive agitation in the state for redressal of their demands. He said the government was totally unconcerned about the educational related problems of the state. There is urgent need to open new colleges and to start post-graduation courses at the places like and Poonch and Doda. For the last several years the population has increased manifold but there was hardly any increase in the colleges. He also opposed the extension being given to the Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University and said that ABVP will favour the appointment of a new face. He said in this connection they will meet the Governor who is the Chancellor of this university. Mr Narinder Singh, state ABVP leader also spoke on the occasion and highlighted several problems of the students like hostel, delay in exams, errors in results and use of unfair means for selection of some candidates in PG departments. Meanwhile, on the concluding day of two-day provincial level conference the state unit of ABVP took some decisions and also passed resolutions. The new body was also formed and the names are being released tomorrow. |

attempts suicide Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 14: Seven persons were injured in two different road accidents on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway while as a young man sustained critical burn injuries. Besides, a teen-aged boy made an abortive attempt to end his life. According to police reports, four persons of a family were critically injured when their speeding maruti car skidded off the road and turned turtle near Samba this morning. The car was on way from Jammu to Pathankot when the mishap occurred. After getting the information the police party from Samba immediately rushed to the accident site and shifted all the injured to local hospital with the help of locals. Doctors attending them at Samba hospital referred them to Government Medical College Hospital in view of their deriorating condition. Their condition was stated to be critical till the last reports came in. They have been identified as Amarjeet Kour wife of Surjeet Singh of Mukarian and her three sons Jaspreet Singh, Sukhpreet Singh and Amainder Singh. In another accident, two pillion riders and a scooterist sustained critical injuries when their scooter was hit by negligently driven truck at Gaghwal this morning. The driver of the truck fled away from the spot leaving behind the victim bleeding profusely. After getting the information from locals the police party rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to local hospital where doctors referred them to Medical College in view of their deteriorating condition. Doctors attending them stated their condition as critical. They have been identified as Jarnail Singh son of Ram Chand, Ram Lal son of Chuni Lal and Bimla Devi wife of Chuni Lal, all the residents of village Tara Garh of district Gurdaspur. Police have registered a case in this connection and started investigation to nab the absconding driver. A young man sustained critical burn injuries when his clothes caught fire while working at home. He was shifted to hospital and his condition was stated to be critical. He has been identified as Kumar Pal son of Ganga Ram of Kali Mandi, Samba. In a bid to end life, a teen-aged boy consumed some poisonous drug at his residence and fell unconscious. He was shifted to hospital by family members where doctors washed his stomach and provided him superficial treatment. His condition was stated to be improving. The cause behind this extreme step is yet to be ascertained. He has been identified as Krishan Kumar son of Ram Kumar of Akhnoor. . |
