Advanta Championship VILLANOVA, (US), Nov 14: Lindsay Davenport reached the final for the third consecutive year at the 520,000 dollars Advanta Championships with a surprisingly easy 6-1 6-2 semifinal win over Venus Williams. Davenports opponent in todays final will either be number one-ranked Martina Hingis or number five-ranked Nathalie Tauziat, who faced each other in yesterdays late semifinal. Davenport overpowered Williams from the service line and benefited from spotty serving by her opponent. World number two Davenport served eight aces with no double faults, and surrendered only six points on her serve in the match. "That was one of the best matches Ive served, probably," said Davenport, who lost in the 1997 Advanta final to Hingis and in 1998 to Steffi Graf. "When youre serving well, you can take chances, because all the pressure is on her to hold her serve." Davenport will be playing in her seventh final of 1999. She has a 5-1 record in her previous six finals this year, having lost only to Williams in straight sets in New Haven in August in the last meeting between the two. Yesterdays match, which lasted 50 minutes, went much more smoothly for Davenport. Williams struggled with her serve throughout the match, committing seven double faults and losing five of her seven service games. She lost her serve three times in the first set and twice in the second, each time hurt by double faults. In the matchs final game, she double-faulted three times, the last one setting up match point for Davenport. "She served nicely, and that makes the game a lot easier," Williams said. "I just tried to forget the score and play one point at a time, but I didnt play nearly as good as I thought I would." The victory made it more difficult for world number three Williams to catch Davenport in the year-end rankings. Williams still has a slim chance heading into next weeks chase championships in New York, but would have to advance deep into the tournament and hope davenport loses early. (REUTERS) |
Thousands attend funeral of Malcolm Marshall BRIDGETOWN (BARBADOS), Nov 14: Thousands of fans, dozens of star cricketers and a former prime minister paid tributes today to fast bowling legend Malcolm Marshall, who died from colon cancer last week aged 41. Former Barbadian Prime Minister Erskine Sandiford, who was among the 2,000 in attendance at the service at a Bridgetown stadium, called for a permanent memorial to pay tribute to Marshall. Known as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, Marshall took 376 wickets in 81 tests for the West Indies between 1979 and 1991, which stood as a record until last year. He died in his native Barbados on November 4, five months after his diagnosis and just a year after he married. Marshall was buried with a new, red cricket ball in his coffin as a symbol of his status as one of the greats of the game. His funeral at a stadium outside Bridgetown was broadcast live on radio throughout most of the cricket-playing Caribbean and was attended by scores of cricket stars past and present. Until we meet again, my brother, farewell, farewell, Viv Richards, one of Marshalls captains during his years with the West Indies team, said during his speech today. Also present was Marshalls other West Indies captain, Clive Lloyd. Richards and Lloyd were pallbearers, as were present West Indies captain Brian Lara, close friend Fesmond Haynes and current West Indies star bowler Courtney Walsh, who overtook Marshalls record last year. Mark Nicholas, Marshalls former captain at Hampshire, the English County for whom he played and coached for 14 seasons between 1979 and 1993, delivered the eulogy. Robin Smith, another teammate who played alongside Marshall for England and against him for England, is also flying in from London for the funeral. Other cricket legends attending were fast bowlers Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner and Colin Croft, who with Marshal formed one of the most feared attacks in test cricket. West Indies batting stars from the 1950s, Sir Everton Weekes, 74, and Sir Clyde Walcott, 73, also attended. Even the clergyman conducting the service, the reverend Wes Hall, was a former star bowler for the West Indies. He referred to Marshal during the service as a Golden Icon of West Indies cricket and the greatest fast bowler the game has known. And I have some claim to knowing about fast bowling, quipped hall, who took 192 wickets in 48 tests during his career in the 1960s. After the service, hundreds of fans lined the roadway as the hearse drove by on its way to a nearby cemetery. On Friday, hundreds of fans had paid tribute to Marshall, queuing for hours to file past his body, which was laid in an open casket at a Bridgetown cathedral. Despite the accolades from players around the globe, the words that most moved the crowd were from Marshalls 9-year-old son Mali, who wrote a letter read at the service by family friend Rudi Webster. God, please take care of my father, for I love him very much, it said. (AP) |
Indian batsmen falter, Kiwis square series 2-all GUWAHATI, Nov 14: After batting New Zealand out of the game in two successive matches, Indias top three batsmen fell in a heap chasing an attainable target as the hosts lost the fourth one-day international cricket tie by 48 runs today to let their rivals square the series 2-all with a match left. After restricting New Zealand to 236 for nine on putting them in on a track which showed early life and then grew slower, India never recovered from early jolts to be bowled out for 188 in 45.3 overs to dash hopes of wrapping up the series within the distance at the Nehru Stadium. Skipper Sachin Tendulkar (2) failed to reach double figures for the second match in a row and both Rahul Dravid (5) and the free-stroking Saurav Ganguly - all three struck big centuries to propel India to victory in the previous two ties for a 2-1 lead - followed suit as India lost their way. Left-hander Sunil Joshi cracked a strokeful, unbeaten 61 for his maiden one-day half-century studded with two fours and three sixes after coming in at number eight but it was in vain and he ran out of partners with 4.3 overs left. Chris Drum (2/31) struck early blows and with fellow paceman Scott Styris (2/39) and left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (2/37) claimed bowling honours while Chris Harris effected to run outs with direct hits as only Ajay Jadeja (27) and Vijay Bharadwaj (27) showed some top-order resilience. Man of the match Chris Cairns (80) struck his 14th fifty and raised 96 runs for the fourth wicket with Roger Twose (46) to pull the Kiwis to respectability after India had left them gasping at 32 for three at an early stage. Required to score at a reasonable rate of 4.74 an over, the Indians found the going tough once Tendulkar, Dravid and Ganguly fell in quick succession. The focus will now shift to the Ferozeshah Kotla Ground in Delhi where the fifth and deciding encounter will be played on November 17. The hosts suffered an early jolt when Tendulkar was dismissed cheaply with drum providing the breakthrough. The master batsman could not properly time an attempted drive and Craig Spearman brought off the catch in the cover region after the ball rebounded off silly mid-off fielder Stephen Flemings hand. Stunned by the reverse, the packed crowd were in for more disappointment as in-form Dravid edged a short delivery from Chris Cairns that left his bat to provide wicketkeeper Adam Parore an easy catch. Ganguly, who began by hitting four glorious boundaries in his 17, fell in the very next over when drum trapped him leg before with a straight delivery which left India tottering at 27 for three after seven overs. Both Drum and Cairns bowled tidy opening spells to put the Indians on the defensive and it was left to Jadeja and Bharadwaj to try and rebuild the innings. The two played cautiously to add 56 runs for the fourth wicket before Harris, who was introduced into the attack from the pavilion end in the 20th over, brought an end to the partnership. Instead of trying to boost the team position, Bharadwaj went for a mighty heave but missed the line completely to see his stumps dislodged, undoing all the good work he had done alongwith Jadeja. Bharadwajs departure opened up the floodgates again as Jadeja followed suit in the very next over. He fell to Vettori in his very second over, trying to guide a sharply turning delivery towards the third man region but only succeeding in edging the ball to Parore. The Indians lost three wickets for the addition of just five runs to slump to a disastrous 88 for six at the midway stage of the contest as none of the batsmen seemed to apply themselves and bail the team out of the precarious situation. All rounder Robin Singh, who has played a few gritty knocks, did not survive long either as he was run out to a direct throw from Harris, allowing the visitors to take a stranglehold on the match. Wicketkeeper M S K Prasad played a couple of flamboyant shots before offering a catch to twose at the long-off fence trying to hoist Vettori and it seemed to a hopeless case for India eager to clinch the series. With the run rate steadily climbing, the later order batsmen had no option but to go for their strokes and Joshi brought some cheer for the capacity crowd with some lusty hitting on both sides of the wicket. He picked up part-time bowler Nathan Astle for special treatment as he lifted him for a six over midwicket to notch up his maiden half century and then spanked the next ball to the straight boundary in celebration. Joshi and Nikhil Chopra (13) put on a rollicking 46 runs for the eighth wicket before the latter was run out thanks to another brilliant pick and direct hit from Harris to virtually bring the Indian challenge to an end. Services take first innings lead against J&K NEW DELHI, Nov 14: Belligerent half-century knocks by skipper Sanjay Verma (74) and C D Thomson (74), and their 142-run sixth wicket partnership helped Services notch up 262 for eight and take a vital 41-run first innings lead against Jammu and Kashmir on the second day of the four-day North Zone Ranji Trophy league match here today. Resuming at overnight score of 20 for three, Services lost Sachin Kulkarni without adding any runs to the score when seamer Surinder Singh rattled Kulkarnis stumps to give J and K an early breakthrough. Services, replying to visitors first innings total of 221, got another jolt when S Javed (27) was trapped Leg Before Wicket by off-spinner Ashwani Gupta, leaving them tottering at 54 for 5. Thomson then joined verma in the middle and both batted sensibly. They kept the scoreboard ticking with small nudges and pushes to pile up 142 runs for the sixth wicket to give some respectability to the total. Verma was finally consumed by J and K skipper Kanwaljeet Singh when Dhruv Mahajan caught him. His 74 comprised seven hits to the ropes. After services had added 15 runs, Thomson was adjudged leg before wicket to Surinder Singh. His fighting 74 was studded with ten boundaries. Surinder Singh (3/67) was the leading wicket-taker for the visitors. At the draw of stumps, G S Thapa (12) and M V Rao (19) were at the crease. Brief scores: Jammu and Kashmir - 221 Services - 262 for 8 (Sanjay verma 74 Thomson 74 Javed 27 S Singh 3/67 V Sharma 2/45. (PTI) |
