Nadim Seminar

Sir,

Two days Cultural Conference and Nadim Seminar on 30th and 31st of October, 1999, was an event for which the people connected with literary circles were very enthusiastic and they were hopeful of getting a panaromic view of the present literary activity of Kashmiri literature in this part of the State.

But unfortunately, this conclave created certain pricks and pinches which left a sour taste in the mouth of those who are really connected with the ethos and heritage of Kashmiri language. Let me pen down certain observations, which all keen Kashmiri literateurs should ponder over;

To start with, all such conferences and events are started with an introductory address which elaborates about the Agenda or items of the event in full. But the inaugural address made by Samprati President did not give any insight into the events of the two day conference and after a generalised speech, a key note address on Nadim was read out.

The release of books which was scheduled for the day came up abruptly, which otherwise should have been highlighted properly in the inaugural address keeping in view the fact that only a few books are being written and published in this side of the State by the Kashmiri writers. The confusion thus created in the beginning remained till end of the day as Mr Bansi Nirdosh in his speech, as Chief Guest, also looked confused about when Nadim was to be discussed. Perhaps, he was not also briefed about the fact that the following day was fixed for Nadim Seminar.

Also while introducing the dignatries on Presedium Mr Pushkar Bhan who is unchallenged legend of wit and humour in prose of Kashmiri language also a great actor and writer and has got both Sahitya Academy and Padam Shree Awards for his great contribution, was introduced in a shabby way by an unfamiliar person on stage.

On second day, in Nadim Seminar, five papers were read out. When viewed in totality and from an eye of a critic, the whole exercise seemed lopsided, as there was high praises only and effort to decipher between the outstanding and good poetry of Mr Nadim from those compositions which have lesser literary appeal and have been written for some occasions of local need.

But the lopsided exercise did not allow actual critical appreciation to take place. This type of situation can be good for praising a political leader, but for literary analysts one has to keep parameters of quality and standard in mind, otherwise any undefined analysis of creative works keeps gates open for future critics, who can intentionally or otherwise choose a poor work of a writer to pull down his image.

The seminar was followed by musical renderings of Nadim's works. Music was fine and almost all the songs were refreshing except for one which again marred the taste of this music show. The composition ''Hay Wallay, Hay Wallay......'' which is a poem in poor taste was rendered in a shabby manner and style making audience wonder over the wisdom of selectors. As for as my knowledge of Kashmiri Music is concerned this song of Nadim has never been composed by Radio Kashmir Srinagar or any other agency, surely due to its inherent draw back.

Water trade

Sir,

The sensational news item ''Clandestine sale of drinking water in P.H.E Department Kashmir'' appearing in the D.E. of 18.10.99 portrays sad state of affairs reflecting inefficiency and mis-management prevailing in the Kmr PHE Department. Though it did no surprise in the present environment where even sale of human life is considered sacred. It can not be gainsaid that we accept corruption as a matter of right and accord respect to it without any shy shame for there is total erosion of moral values.

How ridiculous and odd it looks that we have started to play foul with the Almighty God who is providing us plenty and free water for the survival. We are so callous that we have not spared human beings, compelled by circumstances who put their precious organs for sale.

I recount the days when the PHE Department was manned by the then Chief Engineer Mr A R Mir who gave no chance for complaint or grievance. It was with his unflinching efforts that there was an unthinkable expansion. During his incumbency there was no letup in the supply of drinking water to the chromically drought areas.

He worked relentlessly round the clock, sparing no pains to check all the systems personally, ensuring services without any fault or falter.

He would not drop a subject, however unimportant, till he would see that it is completely done. He considered human body not for enjoyment but for the service of mankind. I wonder why the officers in succession have not adhered to this beaten track besides, adding their own worth, merit and potential to make it more profitable. I advice the Govt to enlist the valued and matured guidance of persons of his stature to carry on the work smoothly and uniformally well.

Yours etc....
