NEW DELHI, Nov 3: Skipper Sachin Tendulkar and ace leg-spinner Anil Kumble led the overall averages in batting and bowling in the three-test series against New Zealand that ended yesterday. The master batsman, who was in glorious form and cracked his first test double century, 217 in the first innings in the third test at Ahmedabad, also had an unbeaten 126 in the first match in Mohali against his name. The 26-year-old star piled up 435 runs from six innings, remaining unbeaten twice, for a stupendous average of 108.75. Kumble, who rediscovered his form and proved a terror in the second test at Kanpur which India won by eight wickets to eventually seal the series 1-0, tops the chart among bowlers. The 29-year-old bowler finished with a superb haul of 20 wickets, for just 18.20 runs apiece, which also enabled him to claim the man of the series award. Left-hander Saurav Ganguly was the second best batsman in the Indian ranks, scoring 244 runs for a fine average of 61.00 which included a century and two fifties. The big bonus was impressive performances by both openers S Ramesh and Devang Gandhi, in his debut series. Left-hander Ramesh, who has been a picture of consistency since making his debut early this year, struck two fifties and a century to aggregate 287 runs at 47.83 while Gandhis two half-centuries enabled him to total 200 from five innings at 50.00. Kumble captured a match-winning 10 for 134 in Kanpur as he bagged five wickets in an innings twice. Pace spearhead Javagal Srinath, who claimed 13 wickets for an average of 24.07 produced the second best effort on either side. The bowler, who claimed 6 for 45 in Mohali to bring India back into contention after being shot out for 83, bowled incisively in the first two tests. Skipper Stephen Fleming led the list for New Zealand with his consistent batting display on the slow tracks of India. The 26-year-old left-hander, who played crucial roles in his team drawing both the first and final tests, aggregated 261 runs from six innings for an impressive average of 52.20 and had two half-centuries to his credit. His highest was the match-saving 73 he scored in the first test. Nathan Astle was the second most consistent, compiling 192 runs from five innings at 48.00 with 74 as his highest. The 20-year-old left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori was the most successful among the Kiwi bowlers, claiming 12 wickets though at an expensive 45.25 apiece. The bespectacled bowler, who sent down as many as 191.3 overs in the three matches, claimed a fine six for 127 which was his lone five-plus wicket haul in an innings. However, paceman Dion Nash headed the averages, claiming eight wickets at 34.87. His splendid moment was on the opening day of the Mohali match, where he ripped apart the host batting line-up to come up with his career-best haul of six for 27. Interestingly, he managed to take only two more wickets in the remainder of the series on wickets which gave little assistance to fast bowlers. (PTI) |
